More product reviews- Shave creams/Gels
« on: February 23, 2008, 08:39:31 PM »

Ok here are some more product reviews of stuff I have tried. Some are good some are bad. I will try to keep everything catagorized.

Shave Creams/Gels

Ok this might be the most important part of a good head shave. Better lubrication=less irritation. I use a shave brush to apply all things that go on my head and face.

Taylor Of Old Bond St Rose cream tub- Fantastic! Very thick and stout cream when whipped up in a bowl. Very nice smell and the razor will glide effortlessly across your head. A real treat. Maybe expensive though.. Not one demerit. 10/10
Kiss my Face Creams These also rock! I bought every scent at Wild Oats and they smell great. They are cheap, dont contain a bunch of crap, and really provide nice lather! I use these often in my rotation! Needs lots of water though, you cannot be stingy with the water. 9/10
KOS Alphagel I bough a tube of this at the drugstore. It is very nice gel IMO. Even though it is clear I still whip it up with a brush. It holds the water well and doesnt dry out fast. It doesnt gunk too bad for a gel either. I get tired of the mentholated stuff though. 8/10
Bump Stopper medicated shave gel This stuff is really strong smelling. Its does smell like medicine. It is kind of runny. It does coat the scalp nice, and when water it applied to it and mixed in my head is super slick. Very nice lubrication. Only thing that turns me off is smell. 7/10
Aveeno Theraputic gel This gel in a can is very nice. It lubricates nice, and doesnt have any kind of smell at all. I can easily say that I have never had irritation using this stuff. I recommend this. 9/10
Regular Barbasol foam sensitive skin This foam is all air. It doesnt provide much lubrication for the head. You can feel the razor scaping against your skin. No way! Stay away! For some reason I like the smell of this stuff though. 3/10
Hair Conditioner I have head of guys using conditioner to soften/shave thier head. It does seem to really soften the hair up. I have used it twice now to shave with and both times my head itched after I got out of the shower. 4/10
Van der hagen glycerine shave soap WOW! This is sold at wal-mart. I saw a video on Youtube of a guy "pre loading" his shave brush with this. This essentially means rubbing a wet brush on this soap working it down into the brush, then whipping up regular shave cream. The Soap add so much more lubrication. I will be honest this makes the slickest mixture you will find. I would give it 11 if I could. 10/10
Proraso Green tube Also a very nice old school cream. It produces mountains of lather with a nickel sized dollup. The lather is rich and heavy. Provides very smooth shave. But again, I get tired of the menthol/cooling stuff. 8/10
Edge gel I bought a little can of this just to try. This gunks up like a big dog!! It made a nice foam for the head. I found that I had to keep a little extra water on there too. Besides the gunking up it was a ok shave. 6/10
Organic Root Stimulator Anti bump Lotion I found this in the shaving dept at Walgreens. I bought it for a bump treatment, since it is heavy into Tea Tree. But as I was reading on the bottle it says that you can shave with it too. So I rubbed a layer of it on. It is very slick and slimy. It provided good razor lubrication at first. But then it started to burn! I think it is the Tea Tree oil that burns, but dang! 6/10

So This is all the creams and gels I have used for headshaving. I will do another review here soon on Bump/Burn treatments, Shaving oils, Misc products.  Stay Smooth O0

Ok here is an addition to the shave cream page.

I was at the base commisary yesterday and saw something new in the shave isle.

OXY Benzoil Peroxide shave cream Ok I thought this might rock! Help combat acne while shaving too! I tried it last night and man this stuff is unlike any other shave cream. It is runny as heck! Its like a balm. It does not stick on your face at all. It doesnt lather at all. I found it hard to shave with and not much lubricating at all. I might just use it as a BP face wash from now on.

5/10

Geez Nick that is one thorough and insightful test  you shared with us mate. I will keep an eye out for a few of those products.

I have never tried Barbasol before, guess I wont try it now.

Nick, thanks for the reviews bro!

I'll have to give the Van der hagen a try.

OK Nick, went to my local Wally's today and got me a bar of the Van der Hagen. I'll be trying it tomorrow on the face and dome. This stuff is only $1.47 a bar so as far as experiments go (financially, anyway) it will be painless. I will post back my result. If this is an 11/10 I am going back and buying them out and throwing out all my other creams. The bar I got has Aloe Vera and Shea Butter in it. Each bar is encased in plastic inside the display box so no worries about the bar sitting too long and breaking down in the package.

Sunday, 20 April, 2008. As I said above, I secured a bar of the Van der Hagen and used it this morning. Nick, you were dead on about this product! I had about 3 days growth, not an easy task for any cream. In addition, I used a Personna Tri-Flexxx cartridge on my HeadBlade. Check my thread about the Personna Tri-Flexxx to see what my initial reaction was to them. The Van der Hagen made this such a smooth shave I couldn't believe it. I did get one little cut but I attribute this to human error combined with the choice of blade. This shave cream is definitely DA BOMB! I'll be stopping at Wally's on my way home from work in the a. m. and buying them out. Shaved my face with the VdH also, used a Personna Tri-Flexxx on my Sensor, not one cut! Good call!

+1 to this!

I have been getting bad razorburn the past couple of days, and decided I would try this stuff... hell, for the price it was an easy decision.

I used it tonight and WOW! -> this stuff ROCKS!!!

I also bought some witchhazel and the combo was super effective!

After this routine I put a few drops of baby oil on the dome and voila - head felt GREAT!

Kudo's to showing me the path to slick and easy - non razorburn slyness!

This stuff sounds great, is it in the shaving aisle or the soap aisle at Walmart?

I found mine in the shaving aisle at WallyWorld. It was on a lower shelf, not up with the canned shave creams.

Thanks, buddha.  Is it necessary to use a brush with it?

It helps to use a brush to whip up a nice stout lather. The brush also helps keep the lather hydrated. I use the Van der Hagen and Rose cream. And the results it a super slick mixture!

Thanks Nick, I don't own a brush, so I'll have to lather up like using a bar of soap.
