Can people really not tell I'm losing my hair?
« on: February 10, 2008, 06:42:41 AM »
I've been shaving my head since about the middle of last summer, because I had the good old Norwood 3-4 horseshoe shape. In the fall, I moved to Germany to study.

Since I moved here, I've never seen so many people fascinated with my hair. I'm pretty sure every single one of my 19 roommates has asked me, individually, why I shave my head, if I ever had long hair, and what my hair color was.

I always thought that people would assume I shaved my head because I was losing my hair. Plus, my hairline is still visible no matter what, the more so after a couple days of growth if I get lazy.

Any thoughts?

19 roommates? Wow.....

I can't speak for everyone, but it's usually evident whether or not someone is loing their hair, especially people with longer hair (not as visible with a tight cut). Hope that helps.

This just reaffirms that you did the right thing by shaving your head.  Wouldn't you rather that people not be sure if you were losing your hair or not, as opposed to being dead certain  by letting them see a grown-out horseshoe?

I've had a few people ask me the same questions -- why I shaved, how much hair would I have if I didn't, etc.  I thought I had enough shadow to give the game away, but I think it all boils down to the fact that most people are not that fixated on studying someone else's scalp.

I think it just goes to show that people are so self absorbed that unless you do something drastic like shaving your head, they just don't pay much attention!  ::)

And proud of it! ;)

A few years back on another forum, a poster took great umbrage to the fact that I dared post an opinion that differed from his own. The gall of it! He called me an "opinionated walrus". I think he thought it was an insult regarding my weight and facial hair, but I thought it was hilarious and now I use it frequently.

I think that really pisses him off.

Well, I'm sly, so that doesn't apply to me.

Its hard to tell if you got a tan or blonde hair, if your pale and have dark hair the hairline is very visible. I also think that if you are going bald yourself, you pay more attention to other peoples hairline

Yeah, I think you tend to notice it more once you start going through it yourself. And most people notice it in themselves much more than others do, because you see yourself in the mirror everytime you look

Occasionally someone will tell me that I'm losing my hair in the front, I tell them, "that's kinda what I'm aiming for, I've lost it everywhere!"

I think it's partially due to the popularity of the shaven head right now, since it is so much more "fashionable" in pop, and even certain sports and by celebrities.
That may prompt people to ask you about it. It's also possible they may want to do it themselves and may be looking for some input.
Either way, a smooth sly head looks way better than a 3-4 horseshoe.
Keep it smooth , bro!  O0
