Anyone on Meds?
« on: October 19, 2007, 09:52:49 AM »
Hey Guys,

I was watching the ballgame last night and was inundated with med commercials. It seems there is a pill for almost everything under the sun these days.

I really refrain from any chemicals and that is part of the reason I never went for the various "hair growth" meds they push.

I am wondering if the "No plugs, Drugs or Rugs" crowd takes any of these mamas little helpers or if you have noticed that it seems pharm. companies are trying to diagnose and prescribe meds to us daily on TV?

I also try to avoid meds when it makes sense.  I rarely use pain meds and many over the counter products.  Though, I will follow doctor's orders when it's the only logical alternative.

I hate taking meds and as a general rule try to go with the natural supplements.  This past week I went for my annual checkup and walked out of the office with 2 new prescriptions.  I filled one and found an over the counter subsitute for the other because just my copay alone was gonna be $50.  My doctors been prescribing Cholestoral lowering drugs for me for the past 5 years.  I've yet to fill one of these precriptions.  I've actually found some natural supplements that seem to work pretty good, just can't get the doc to admit that I don't need the drugs.

Agreed bro...but also the fact that what some kids need is a lot less meds and a whole lot more attention and discipline.    In addition, working with high school kids, it is quite common for kids who have been raised to
"take their meds" to stop taking them and self medicate with illegal drugs.

Nope.
I try to eat well but I also take a multivitamin daily just in case the diet isn't what it should be.

And let's not forget those charmers who take the legal med at school and the not so legal meds away from school.

We had a kid once who we suspected was smoking the left-handed luckies (among other things).  His primary care-giver assured us he wasn't; he went no where except church.  Guess why he was going to church ?

Thats really great to hear.

I know we are all sometimes faced with legit reasons to be prescribed meds but it seems that those I know that are prone to get prescribed anti-depressants or other "helpers" seem to snowball into having many more.

They also seem to be most likley to dose their kids on Riddlin.

It scares me to think about how acceptable these things are, especially since there seem to be so many side effects.

Reading about Propecia when it came out... "Pregnant women should not handle broken pills" What the hell is that? Why would I want that in my body if a preger shouldn't even "handle" it?

Thumbs up to finding natural alternatives guys!

I don't even take aspirin unless it is absolutely necessary.

Hooray! ... just got off of ulcer pills and now only take blood pressure pills.

Now if I could just figure out how to reduce my blood pressure.

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll mention again.  I always used to pride myself in not taking any prescriptions unless I got cold/flu and needed antibiotic or something like that.  Since the heart cath and stent I now have Plavix for at least a year and Crestor until something better comes along to control my cholesterol levels and a full strength aspirin every day.

Yeh, I'm on drugs, they seem to accumlate like years!  Several years ago when I got the diagnosis of borderline or pre-diabetes, although no "diabetes" drugs, I got put on Zocor, and 81mg asprin---Kiddy Stuff, as well as amitriptoline for nerve pain in my feet caused by the elevated blood sugars, and HCTZ for "borderline" high blood pressure.  (I'm  so borderline, I need to take my passport to go to the john!)  Long story short, 20# lighter, blood sugar now less than 105 fasting for last couple of years and A1C below 6.  I couldn't take the Zocor it made me a zombie, no energy at all.  The Doc changed that to Zetia--and although expensive, my colesterol is now less than 200, and the good type is 45, more than the required number.  My amitriptoline morphed into Topomax when the ami stopped working, and Topomax was GREAT, I lost more weight w/o trying, but it finally pooped out too, so now I'm on Lyrica, but although the pain is under control again, I've gained 10-15#.  It's one of the side effects.  The blood sugar is still okay, but now I'm really watching the diet because of the weight.
Yes, I'm on pills, but they seem to be working, provided I exercise like an obsessive idiot, and eat oatmeal like a horse for breakfast.  Drinks are limited, so I buy the best. But I'm alive, and no other problems.  Life is sweet, Sly is a hoot, laisse les bonnes temps roulez cher!

I probably should be heavily medicated, but that crap cost too much.
