Before and After

I remember being 25 and having a formal job interview. Because I couldn't wear a ballcap, I spent the whole morning carefully combing my hair over and forward, spraying it down with this thickening spray and hairspray, adding in concealer over my bald spot and all over. As I was walking from my car to the building for the interview, several large gusts of wind managed to dislodge and lift my combover up and blow it apart. I tried to keep it together until I found a bathroom, only to realize I had concealer all over my hands. I then finally decided that it was over, and buzzed my head down completely the next day. Within a few months I bought a new razor and took it down to the skin.

Razorhead:
@J_Scott I feel that buzzing and shaving is the best answer. On Instagram there are so many posts about products that claim to thicken and conceal thinning hair, and I just wonder how effective it all really is. It seems like so much work.  When I grow my hair, I still keep it as a very short crewcut. But I'm at a stage where I do wonder if I'm kidding myself. I don't use any thickeners or concealers because it seems like a lot of money being spent on products that don't work. And a lot of stress.

J_Scott:
@Razorhead Speaking from my own experience, those products only seem to work if you have at best minimal balding to cover up. Once your at the point where your seeing more skin than hair on top, it's not going to work or look natural. I seriously doubt the concealer/thickening technology has changed that much in the last decade since I last used it. What they don't show is even with all the concealer and spray in your hair, it still doesn't look natural up close.

In my opinion, you look great with a shaved dome, but keeping a tight crewcut or a tidy buzz is a great look and alternative for a balding guy who doesn't want to go the razor route. As long as your not looking like your hiding anything and keeping it short and neat.

Hello gents,

I found this link online. It shows 127 before and after pictures of guys losing their hair and decided to shave it off.  Maybe there was a longer period of time before some of the before-and-after's, but it seems like a lot of guys decided to shave their heads very early on in their hair loss. While others held out.

I'm curious to know at what point did you decide it was time to shave? Was there a specific moment?

My story is a little different in that I started to shave my head when I had a full of hair. 19 years later, I actually have hair loss with a NW5. From time to time, I will grow my hair out like I am right now, but I can see right through the front to almost half way across the top of my head. I've lost that much density. It will probably be the last time I will be able to grow it.

My story is a lot like yours razorhead.  I started shaving before I had any hair loss and kept the sly look for at least six months every year for many years.  It was only after I started going bald at the crown and experiencing some profuse thinning that I went back to the horseshoe flattop
