Delayed double-take
« on: April 24, 2025, 12:04:43 PM »
Hi guys

Thought I would share a story about a reaction from my boss, from one of the first times I had gone into the office after shaving off a #2 buzz head of hair to fully bald -

So, I had done a full razor headshave the one evening after getting home from work, and I got a text from my boss later that evening about attending an important meeting the following morning with a big potential new client. I remember thinking Oh well, here goes!

So I get to meeting place the next day, we even have a brief catchup and strategy discussion prior to meeting.

Nothing about my bald head. Not a word.

So the meeting goes on for about an hour. As we're walking out leaving the building, I notice him looking at my head and then looking again with a slightly comical but surprised look in his eyes. Ha ha, finally, I thought to myself.

The next day there was a brief quip about Kojack, I can't even remember exactly what it was.

So there we go.

That was it. No disapproving remarks or drawn out overreaction.

End of story.

Key take away - don't overthink it!

This reminds me of when I first started shaving my head. I had a gal living with me, she was shocked when I shaved my full head of hair but by the end of the day she said she loved it, and wanted me to keep it. After a few months, I think she tired of the bald head, and wanted me to grow my hair back. So I was about 8 weeks into growing it and I suddenly had the urge, so while she was at work, I shaved my head smooth. I thought she might freak out when she came home but no comment. Then we run a couple errands and then stopped for dinner at a pizza restaurant. After deciding on a pizza, ordered, and we were waiting, she finally said " oh, you shaved your head again".
Bald by choice, and loving it!

I'm thinking that I probably wrote about this years ago (around the turn of the century-talk about feeling old!) when my late wife and I owned a mobile espresso truck. One of the businesses we served was a beauty shop in a nearby town and when we started in the business I had hair down to my shoulder blades. Several times hair stylists in this salon had either trimmed off my "split ends" or braided my hair so they were familiar with my locks up close and personal.
At that time I was jogging around 5 miles a day and the area of the country where we lived was infested with deer flies during the spring though early autumn. One day I went out jogging and several flies divebombed me and got caught in my hair which was not braided or tied back.
If you're not familiar with these hellish beasts they buzz like dentist drills and by the time I got back to the house I had decided that I was going to "scrape the grape" and did so. I donated the hair via USPS to Locks Of Love.
The next time I drove the route I walked into the aforementioned salon with a little concern for how my new look would be received. One of the stylists who had been more familiar with my hair than the others looked at me and asked me if I had lost weight.
After that I knew everything would be okay.

And that's usually how it goes! I had a meeting with one of our directors at work and he said only said 'you and john use the same stylist'.  John was a coworker with a shaved head and goatee. We looked like twins -- although it was becoming standard look.

I think my favorite comment was when I resigned and sent out out a farewell note someone replied with "we will miss you.....and you really know how to pull off a shaved head'."

Thanks @reddog @buddha and @Razorhead

All good stories and worth repeating

Never underestimate the power of being too caught up in their own stuff to pay much attention

Right, it also demonstrates that other people take our hairstyle much lass seriously that all of us do. Especially these days when a shaved head is so mainstream that it's just another haircut!

After I began to shave my head bald regularly, I still wore a baseball cap to work because I was a bit afraid of what people would say.  I would wear one before to hide my shaggy hair.

One day I decided that I would rather not wear baseball caps anymore and one day I came to work without one. No one said anything about it except for one person who would just comment she couldn't imagine me with this new look. My sister said she was surprised I did it.

The worst reaction an acquaintance from an even I used to host laughing a bit, but it was only that night.

I don't care anymore. In fact because of the look, convenience, and how much money I've saved on haircuts I have contemplated laser the hair off. I will just shave for the time being.
Bald by Choice since July 2023!  Having hair is overrated.

An update:

I went to visit my older brother and he brought over his formerly estranged oldest son to his place.  The last time he saw me, I still let my hair grow normal and was only used to see me with a head full of hair.

He saw me "bald" now and never said a word about it.

I just sent into the office with my bald head since I always had a buzzcut of some sort before that.  So to me it wasn't a big shock. Plust, after the first time I shaved I loved it so much I just wouldn't wear a hat. I wanted to show off my bald head.  Funny thing is, I always did wear a hat when I got a new type of haircut, such as the first time I got a flattop or a high and tight. For some reason, I wasn't comfortable with the change or I just didn't love it in the same was as when I shaved my head.

I actually don't like wearing a ball cap with a shaved head. To me it feels uncomfortable. Not sure if it's because I'm more sensitive to the heat or moisture under the hat.

Hats are a funny thing with haircuts!

Well, I recall the first few times I did. I met with shock and disapproval, especially from my very conservative family. I don?t recall getting a genuinely positive remark from anyone on the other hand people who didn?t know me as having hair did not seem to even notice that I was bald by choice or didn?t care.

Even last winter when I did my annual New Year?s Day head shave, I met with some negative comments from some of my friends

I didn?t shave my head this year just kept the Flattop, but I will have to shave it next year in order to get my scalp, micro pigmentation touchup done

My wife and I went to a rodeo Friday night.  We had set up folding chairs in front of the bleachers.  The announcer rode up and called me out as the ?wildest man in town.?  He said I can go pick up my prize of Mop and Glo afterwards.  Everyone, myself included, got a good laugh out of it.  I had to do a double take because no one mentions my bald head anymore.

@jason_greets  kudos to you, clearly very comfortable in your look.
Laser is quite a big step, I don't think it's something I would consider myself. I enjoy the process and ritual of shaving my head just as much as the final result

@Razorhead  I'm with you caps, also don't like wearing a cap on a shaved head

@chuck63  ;D like that you were the one doing the double-take

@Semi-Sly yeah, family can often be toughest.  As with many things, I say persistence pays off

That's hilarious. I've not heard that one before. But I think only a sly guy can really a appreciate that as humor. It's live a badge of honor.  Gotta love the shine.
