Oster Fast Feed vs Wahl Balding
« on: February 12, 2025, 10:25:47 PM »
Hey all,

For the last few years my routine has been to trim my hair all the way to the lowest that my Oster Fast Feed will go. According to Oster, this is 000. I do this once a week on Fridays.

It's generally OK but by the next Wednesday it is already a bit longer than I'd like it.

I'm wondering if switching to the Wahl Balding clipper, which is 6x0, would make it noticeably shorter by middle of the next week? Or maybe another different clipper? Or would the difference be negligible?

I'm trying to maintain my once-weekly head trim. Obviously I can do it more frequently but just curious if there is a better tool for the job without increasing frequency.

Thanks

My oyster has interchangeable blades and they include 000, 0000, and 00000 blades.

Even though you may get it closer, I doubt you will see a significant difference with a weekly trim.

The Oster Fast Feed does NOT have interchangeable blades, just one blade of adjustable length: https://www.osterpro.com/barbers-stylists/clippers/oster-fast-feed-adjustable-pivot-motor-clipper/SAP_76023510001.html.

You have something else.

Even though you may get it closer, I doubt you will see a significant difference with a weekly trim.

That's my suspicion as well. The difference between 000 and 6x0 is something like 0.2mm. That much can grow very quickly.

I guess I will have to either switch to a razor or start trimming twice weekly.

Have you ever shaved? I can tell you a smooth shaved head feels amazing! It can be addictive, that's why alot of guys end up shaving daily.

I have a pit bull head shaver. Not as close as a razor, but closer than balding clippers , I would presume. Hair grows about  1/8 of an inch per week.
I agree with sly beard , the difference between shavers would be insignificant in one week.

I have the Wahl balding clippers. I'm generally not a fan of them. You have to be careful using them and always buzz with the direction of hair growth -- not against. Going against the direction can chew up your scalp if you are moving to quick or not careful.

I just use regular Wahls that I bought online and it comes with the full set of plastic guards. I just clipper shave with those without a guard and with the blade in the closed position to buzz the hair as close as possible. I went to a barber supply store once, and he sold me an edger that I also use. They work nicely.

Thanks guys and apologies for disappearing (life drama).

I'll pass on the Wahl Balding and just switching to using my Fast Feed 2x/week in that case. Agreed it doesn't make much sense that the difference would be noticeable after a week.

RE: shaving. Not what I want at this point. It takes long enough to DE shave my face every 2-3 days. I do enjoy it but I simply don't have time to DE shave my head and my face. Plus, I have enough hair that I can pull off the very short buzz look so it's my preference anyway.

Appreciate the answers!

I wish I could get used to wearing a buzzcut, but I don't like how I look with one. So either I grow a flattop or shave it daily.

Yes, there is definitely a time commitment to wearing a shaved head. I find a quick shave in the shower everyday is the best for me. Of course I've been retired for years so I have the time.

It's true....having both a clean-shaven head and face is a lot of work. Although I love how clean it looks, I usually end up growing my beard back in. I would try rotating (head one day and face the next day), but I hate not having my noggin as smooth as possible.

When I buzzed my head, I had Oster clippers too ? but if you?re buzzing to 000, you really might as well razor shave. That?s so close you?re pretty much bald. Might as well get the benefit of the smooth feel.
