I'm not sure I buy the explanation either. The gas masks would seal around the face, and I heard no facial hair was allowed. Maybe they shaved in some sort of a show of solidarity? Anyway, it looks like they were enjoying their bald heads.

I buy some old books to make art (collages) and see this picture,is interesting how they look so happy with their heads
Like you suggest,maybe is more an act of solidarity. But we need to recognize that being bald would be more practical in the fiel, especially if you need to use a helmet or something like that.
