Beard conditioner/softener recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good product for conditioning or softening a beard?

I have good success with using a regular hair conditioner.  You can but a lot of expensive beard products, but I am cheap and look for alternatives.  It also help to not shampoo or use soap on the beard more that you actually need to do.  My routine is to use the conditioner in the shower daily, and weekly for the shampoo.
