I've been using an Edwin Jagger DE razor for awhile with Derby blades, and it's really great - but I switch back to using my regular Harry's razor whenever I'm short on time, and am actually starting to find that it gives me an easier, smoother shave.
So here's my question: are the old-school DE razors ACTUALLY better? I mean... really? Or is it just branding/marketing that tricks my hipster brain into thinking that it's better because it's "old school?"
At any rate, using my badger brush is ALWAYS awesome, so I ain't giving that up.
In my opinion a good 2 or 3 blade is smother and faster than a DE razor. But I do like the simplicity of the old style razor and less plastic waste than a cartridge. I go back to my old DE on a whim now and then. But for comfort and less chance of cuts the newer is my choice. But I must say the 4 to 6 blade cartridge is good for making Gillette richer and is overkill.
YMMV or your mileage may vary which means what is good for one may not be good for the other. Whatever works for you sir. For me . . . I get the BEST shaves compared to the cartridge razors. Safety razors come in two categories. Vintage (old school) safety razors like the Gillette Fatboy, Gillette Slim, GEM 1912, Schick Injector. Modern (new school) safety razors like the Edwin Jagger 89L, Merkur 37C, Mongoose, The Wolfman, Above the Tie aka ATT.

I've been busy the last 4 days, so I've been using my electric and cleaning up with a cartridge. So today I got out my soap, brush, New blade and my trusty old Gillette double edge. Took my time and got an incredibly smooth shave. Love the bbs feel, and I've got a great tan going already this year, looks outstanding if I don't say so myself!
i use both every shave first pass with a safety razor with the grain and a gillette for the second and clean up seems to the winning combo for me
I use a DE on the sides because I get far less irritation from the DE. I use a Fusion everywhere else because I can shave fast with no nicks from it.
Big fan of DEs, SEs, shavettes here. More fun to use and give me better shaves on my face. I still use disposable cartridges on my head though!

I just started using my DE razor for wet shaving my face this week and am loving the results and enjoying the shaving of my face for the first time in my life. I have had a Cheap DE off and on through the years but never knew how to use it correctly and never enjoyed shaving, I started shaving my head with a safety razor and it changed everything! Getting better results on head and face every day. I use a fresh blade every day, one side for my head and the other for my face. Great blades for cheap is a main reason to love safety razors.
