Marketing shaving products
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:18:55 PM »
Isn't it interesting that Headblade is still the only company out there specifically marketing products for shaving the head?  I understand that Gillette and Schick passed on marketing the Headblade when Todd Greene first came up with the concept, thinking that it was a small niche product.  But now that the sly look has caught on in such a major way, wouldn't you think that one of the bigger companies would be suggesting that their products be used on the scalp?

Actually, there are a couple other companies - Matte For Men, Bald Guyz, and Bold for Men.  Also, Sharps has a Bald Head Balm.

But, yes I agree that it's interesting none of the big guys have gone after the specific niche market, but then again, more people still shave their head with a Gillette razor than the HeadBlade.  And, even if they are using the HeadBlade, they're probably using Gillette blades.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

And it's a very small niche market. Most guys who shave their heads probably don't know these companies listed exist, and there is not enough money in it for the big companies. But as we get more visible (bad pun intended) the bigger companies will take notice and try to run the small ones out.

Max highlights a great point. HB are a small company that have targeted a specific niche market(Headshavers). A company like Gillette which is a multion BILLION dollar company will eventually see the possibility of snaring this niche market. They will buy out companies like HB,Bald Guyz,Matte for Men etc and in turn add to their already unending wealth.

I would not be surprised if Todd Greene has already been approached by them with buy out offers.

I don't believe the "Sly" movement has reached its potential. In some professional job interviews I was asked to grow out some hair because my shiny head was too radical/extreme and not considered good grooming. I obliged for a while, but realized that the company was looking to mold me into a "yes man" and I wasn't going to have that.

So back to sly.

More on topic....
It's been about 10 years since shaved heads started popping up everywhere, and I think that with the rising comfort level, more companies will start catering to the sly community. I could see Schick making a "headblade" like device... after all, it did copy Gillette's multi-blade platform and vibrating razors.
