Question Razor, any truth to the stories that the larger the dog the shorter the life expectancy or that purebreds don't live as long as mix breeds?

Larger breeds do have a shorter lifespan, but many of them are living longer than they used to do to improved veterinary care that is available nowadays.  The notion that mixed breeds are healthier or live longer than purebreds is a myth.  There isn't as much data about mixed breeds -- and unless you know exactly what the mix is and have a large enough population of the exact same mix to compare to, it's really not possible to draw any conclusions.  As a result, all mixed breeds, regardless of the mix, get lumped together, and when compared against any purebred, the results tend to be skewed.

That is great to know.  I am looking forward to a day when I can get a Greenland or a Norweigan Elk Hound, but always worried about the life/health issue.
