25 yo male balding, some shaving/tanning/looks question
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:17:48 PM »
Hello baldies! I hope you can answer some of my questions. Apologies if I made any mistakes in this post, English is not my native language.

I've always had a nice bunch of black hairs. Around the age of 18 I started to 2 gray spots. They aren't very big so I've managed to hide them with quite some work.

About half a year ago I started to suspect my hairline was receding. At first I thought it was because of the gel (I use gel all the time). But earlier this week my barber told me my hair really was thinning. When I looked in the mirror later that night, I even noticed some thin spots on the top of my head  :( Again, this could be due though the gel I use, but I'm afraid I'm just getting bald really fast.

Now, I've always said that I would shave my head completely if I went bald. I know people who comb it over etc. and that's just hideous. At my current state I won't shave it just yet, I will if it starts to get really bad and when I'll get comments about it.

Now, I want to be prepared, even if its months away. I have some questions for you guys:

1) I am really, really pale. I often got remarks if I were sick and got bullied for it in high school. I use a subtle self tanning bodylotion that takes extreme paleness out. (I'd probably prefer going bald over going sickly pale again).

Going bald might soften my pale look as my black hair won't contrast my white skin. But I'll probably continue to use my tanning lotion (plus I don't want to be made fun of for looking like a chemo patient). If I go bald, I'll have to use the lotion on my head as well. Do any of you have any experience with applying self tanner on your head? Does it even work if you have to shave every 2-3 days?
(Oh, and tan beds aren't an option, a family friend who often used them died of melanoma and this scared the sh*t out of me!)

2) I'm also considering cutting my hair really short, like 1mm. I'd prefer this over going bald, plus this way I won't have to put tanning lotion on my head.
but I wonder if my gray spots will stand out this way (and I can't mask them with short hair). Any experience here?

3) Is it necessary to have a more muscular body when going bald at a young age? A lot of bald people are seen as attractive by women, but they are also muscular and they don't have a pale look. I guess it's less of an issue when you grow older. What's your take on this?

Anyways, thanks for answering my questions!

Hello there! I don't have any experience with the tanning lotion so can't speak on that.  What I can say is try to grow a beard. If your beard hair is dark, it will create a balance with the pale skin.  Many muscular guys do look good bald but that doesn't mean you can't try the bald look out.  If you feel the need to bulk up, do so.  Whatever grey hair you have will not have a shadow like dark hair.  Don't let that be a deciding factor when it comes to shaving your head because hardly anyone focuses on that.  Keep us posted on whatever you decide and good luck!

I use a moisturizer that has a bit of self-tanner in it...I think it helps a little, and definitely helped when I first started shaving.  If you're concerned about the tone of your scalp, then it might be a good idea to cut it pretty short and give your scalp time to get a bit of color.  But, obviously be careful with the sun...although if you are in Belgium, I'm not sure that will be that big of a problem, especially not in January!

Thanks for the replies guys. Another question: how fast does facial hair grow compared to facial hear? My facial hair is visible after 2 days.

Do you mean head hair versus facial hair?  If so, I feel like they are relatively the same for me. maybe.
