Mixing Scents

Hello All. Based on comments from the community I am thinking of getting a shaving brush and some cream/soap (I am working towards full on DE shaving, but will start here). Also, based on comments, I recently ordered some Pinaud Clubman and Captain's Choice Bay Rum aftershaves from Amazon. So, when looking into shaving creams/soaps there are so many scents associated with the different varieties. So the question is this: what scent would be appropriate to use with the aforementioned aftershaves, or what combinations, in general, does the community use/like.

I usually start with an application of Shave Secret which has menthol oil. When I use the brush and mug, I like a neutral scent. I found Van Der Hagen is a great soap AND inexpensive. If I shave in the shower, it is basic Dial soap.

Both Clubman and Bay Rum are strong scents, but neither has ever clashed with my Old Spice "Classic" (original scent) deodorant.

On a side note Cave, I use the new Dial soap called coconut water, it is super slippery, and I have used it to shave in the shower.

Hi Dan:  You should be fine with mixing different shave soaps and after shaves.  The majority of the scents out there are not that over powering.  You chose a great after shave in the Captain's Choice Bay Rum.  I use that on a regular basis between that and Osage Rub.  One thing I love about the Captain's Choice is that it contains witch hazel.  Place your after shave in the fridge for that added "boost" to close the pores.

I am a die-hard DE and SE shaver.  You can PM me any time with any questions or post up a question in the SAFETY RAZOR SECTION of the forum.  We have several SBG members who DE and SE and even straight razor shave.  I hope that you can participate in that section.

The clubman scent is a great memory. Smells like the old style barber shops.  Really nice.

When I mix scents, it's usually Shave Secret+Tea Tree+either Razor Rock Shaving Soap or Headslick. Either way I get a very nice lather that lasts and you only need a few drops of each mixed with a wet brush (preferably hot water)

"Basic Dial Soap" contains a high level of Aluminium Chlorhydrate which is the deodorizing part. It's also very drying on your skin. Given the many other brands available that fall in the "basic" soap category you might wish to consider a switch. Just make sure that they are free from Al.Clor.

If you like the scent of Captains Choice, then you might like a the Captains Choice croap from Razorock.  I like the captain, but it wears off too quick - I found that TOBS bay rum hangs around a lot longer.  Pinaud  bay rum is also a nice choice.  But be warned, if you decide to go to the dark side and get Cat-o-9-tails and you have any weepers from your shave, well - think about the shaving scene in Home Alone - it'll definitely wake you up!

If you're looking for a "old spice" type of scent cream, I would suggest something like Trufitt & Hill Grafton (in my top 5 for sure).

You can also get sampler sets from T&H, Stirling Soaps and many other manufacturers so you can find something you like.

Another one that is nice and cheap is C.O. Bigelow - you can get that at a local Bath and Body works and it's fairly cheap (around $10 a tube).  I mix C.O. with Yeti Snot and it freezes the face for sure :)
