My beard is really coarse and curly. Im just wondering what you guys use to keep your beard trim?
I know... I know... a beard trimmer... but is there one you prefer over the other? -

I use a cheap Wahl trimmer. I was tempted by a Philips trimmer that has a vacuum in it to catch debris but it was more money than I had at the time.

hmmmm... I might have to do some more research.
The issue Im running into is the hair on my chin is getting rather long. Almost to long for the thickest hair clipper attachment I have for my clippers.
What I want to do is keep letting the hair on my chin grow and then trim my beard around my cheeks and side burns so everything tapers to the chin. If that makes sence
Ill just have to look up some options. -

If your beard on your chin is that long you may need to use scissors. There is some good beard trimming videos on YouTube.

The beard trimmer stinks. Low power, dull blades, but the hair clippers work just fine on the beard and eyebrows. Used to buzz my head with them too, but no need to do that now.

I have the same kit. And thats one reason I made the post. The beard trimmer that comes in that kit is worthless. -

A few months before I went sly I bought professional Andis hair clippers from Sally's with the intent of keeping and maintaining a buzzcut with a fade. I always liked those haircuts but they grew out in just a matter of a few days so my intent was to cut my hair every few days. That got old quick and I ended up shaving and keeping it off (which was the haircut I really wanted anyway)
That was 15 years ago and I've been using it for my beard and goatee since then. It's worked great, but it is a bit much for my needs. It does not have a battery and it's a bit on the heavy side which is only something you notice when holding it with the fingers on one hand and watching what it's doing in a couple mirrors. It's lasted, but I probably could have bought 4-5 cheap battery powered ones in this period of time for the same amount of money! -

Also, once you get your beard beyond a 1/2" or so clipper guards start becoming ineffective, and guards approaching 1" or so are virtually useless. My technique is to fluff my beard out by brushing it backwards and then carve out an even shape using the clippers without a guard. This would be a really dangerous thing to do with the hair on your head, but the advantage of a beard is that the hair is literally right on the front of your face: you don't have a section hidden behind a foot of skull that requires mirrors and the mental coordination of judging distance and direction.
This technique is surprisingly easy and depending on your style and hair texture you may not even need to brush it backwards.
I still worry that the powercord of the clippers trip me up or a cat will rub my elbow and cause me to carve out a chunk, but it hasn't happened yet.
