Hey gang!

Was wondering if we have any cops--past, present or aspiring--that would like to share their experiences and know how.

I'll start by saying that I'm applying to several agencies here in Denver and have questions about the recruiting process.

Thanks
r.m.

Good luck Robmeister.  I was considering law enforcement years ago, then I got into dispatching and decided law enforcement wasn't for me, and went into EMS.

Law Enforcement is a trying career.  Often the biggest obstacles in it aren't from the citizens or community but internal(out of control PC, politics, etc) department issues.  I call it the occupation  where you're automatically wrong.  You were either too fast or too slow, didn' t do enough or did too little, responded too quickly or too slow, made decision on scene that should have been left for the supervisors or failed to make a decision.....  LOL

Medic, was it "stuff" you heard and were involved with as a dispatcher that was "startling" or "freaked you out" that made you think twice?

I was "on the job" as a Reserve Officer for about 5 years.  I ran the reserve program and was a level one officer.

Things for Law Enforcement have changed a lot since then.  The thing that kept me from full time was the pay.  I think they've fixed than by now.

Most departments around here won't even consider you without a Criminal Justice Degree.  That and being in top physical shape are the 1st two things I work on if I wanted to be a LEO!   O:O

Thanks fer y'all's input.

Yeah, cops are WAY underpaid.

I'm one a them guys who has several things I want to accomplish before I'm too old to do so.

Three major things stand out (there are other minor things) but THREE stand out that I've always wanted to do since I was a kid.

1) Be a rock star
2) Earn a black belt (or some top ranking) in a martial arts style
3) Be a cop

The first one I achieved to a certain level - www.myspace.com/letchengrey

Over the years I've dabbled in various arts and lower ranking belts in Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do and Judo - so I've got some work there (lately I'm very intrigued with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).

The last one, well here I am.....here in Colorado there's no maximum age, as long as yer in good physical, mental and emotional condition and you can cut the mustard with all the requirements and testing.

The only thing that concerns me is past drug usage (of course in the rock & roll business) but it's been 20 years.  But I'm prepared to be honest and some agencies, honest or not, just won't have it.....then again there are more conscientious agencies that do take in the whole scope and context of a candidates life and accomplishments against many years being removed from drug usage.

We'll see...nothing ventured, nothing gained

Well done Rob!  You know you can do whatever you set out to so go for it bro!

I don't think non-LEO's can understand the pride and brotherhood you experience behind the badge.  It's an honor to achieve and an honor to serve with such dedicated men and women.  Part of me has been changed forever and for the better!

It’s too bad a couple bad apples will get all the attention while officers give their life every day and nobody seems to notice.  Such is life as my grandma used to say!
