3 Days In
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:54:49 AM »
I'm three days into the 30 Day Challenge and absolutely loving it.  My wife has no complaints (that's really all that matters) and the reaction from co-workers has been really positive.  Overall, irritation is minimal (using Hydro 5 and Cremo shave cream), with just a few small red areas popping up temporarily.  Not a bad start at all, I must say.  Having said this, I do have a question.  Even though I have fairly light hair (reddish-blond), I do find that I have a persistent shadow.  I'm not quite sure if this is just the way it's going to be, or if maybe I'm not getting a close enough shave?  Given that I'm not even a week into this, I'm wondering if I should wait a little longer before shaving against the grain?  I tried once, and the razor just stuck to the stubble like velcro (to borrow someone else's phrase).  I've read some suggestions regarding a pre-shave oil like Shave Secret, which I'll look for at the store tonight.  Any other suggestions?

I get a shadow too. Sadly it's our hairline. Too rubbish to have hair but too rubbish to be shadowless.

You'll notice it more than others. My head feels smooth but it's still there

Some of my worst days of head shaving have come from trying to over-shave a spot that just wouldn't go smooth and then carving a layer of skin off the spot.

Take your time on ATG shaving. Get used to WTG for a week or two.

It will come in time.

Update on the progress. After 11 days straight of shaving WTG, two days ago I started making a second pass, going ATG. I finally feel like I'm achieving the look and feel that you guys are sporting so nicely. I certainly needed a little over a week of shaving daily before even attempting ATG, but it was really worth it.

Great news! By the way you rock the look! As for the shadow, it will stay until your hair turns grey!
Keep it up!

Helllo inw, you look really good shaved. Keep it up. Goodluck with the 30 day rule.

For me, yesterday was exactly 2 months since I first started shaving sly. You would love it.

Looks awesome man!

One thing I preach is try a shaving brush. You will NOT regret it. After a little while shaving and using one (helps the hair stick up more and also exfoliates, which is nice in dry weather like we're having right now) and a little time and practice, you'll find you no longer need to go WTG, ATG will be all you need.

If your hair is a little longer, remember to let it glide and use a fresh, sharp blade. Don't try to bear down and whisk it off all at once.

Another nice thing is the brush holds the lather so you can quickly re-apply some to where you need it!

Good luck and hopefully you'll be one of the "I've had my head shaved for x years..." in no time! :)

Update. I'm approaching my two year mark and there's been no looking back. One of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm bald (and bearded) for good.

Well done.  Once shaved - and bearded - there is no going back.
