Hello from Detroit!
« on: September 03, 2013, 03:44:41 PM »
Hello Everybody!  Pretty excited to have found this site. I started going bald when I was 23. I'm sure like most of us I was in denial about it, trying to tell myself it wasn't happening. I held onto my hair for WAY too long. I was super thin in back but refused to shave it. What I never really hear being talked about is how awful the actual process of balding was. I'm not talking about the confidence issues or social issues that come with it, but the mere physical process of it. It itched like crazy, and the hair I did have left felt super greasy all the time in back. It was just awful. I was constantly taking mirrors and checking to see what it looked like after I styled my hair and would just get depressed seeing how nasty it looked in back. I had fine hair to begin with so it just started looking like this nasty tangled up bird's nest in back after hair-sprayed it. I was 29 when one night I reached my breaking point. It was just itching so bad, I was hot and felt dirty so I grabbed a WAHL electric razor and just went to town without a guard. It felt so damn good. I just felt clean and symmetrical again (if that makes sense).

At 33 now I recently started struggling with it again this summer. I think I was just getting bored of it. It kind of sucks knowing I will never have another "look". I miss getting haircuts or growing it out to my shoulders, being able to control my style. I actually started looking into that Bosley sh*t and all I read were absolute horror stories. It made me embrace being natural again and to remind myself to just accept it. There are far worse things in life to worry about. Anyway, that is my bald story in a nutshell. It is nice to read other stories on here and see the different ways people overcome the stigma of being bald. Looking forward to digging deeper into the site and talking to some of you.

Well, even if you can't change the look "on top" you can still change things up with a beard or a 'tash - and there's plenty of variety to be had there.

Welcome Red.  Looks good.

Good look and nice story.  However I think the 'stigma' of being bald has long since gone - given the number of men these days that embrace this smart look.

Glad you are with us, sir.

Like Nuts said, the "stigma" really is only in your own head. Most people who see you don't think about your hair any longer than they take to notice if you wear glasses.

You look good. Welcome.

Thanks for the replies. You guys are definitely right, the stigma is all in my head. Dan, occasionally I rock the chin goatee and soul patch but that is about all I can grow. Wish I had the capacity to grow a nice full beard but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Maybe it's my Polish/Slovak heritage...who knows.

Welcome aboard! Nice story and intro...As far as facial hair, especially beards, some people can grow it right away, others may need a little time. Regardless, looking good; enjoy the forum!

P.S. I do have some family that live out in the suburbs of the Detroit area; may have to make a trip out there soon!
