Lover of XTG
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:26:50 PM »
Just wanted to chime in (been a long time since I've peeped my head in here!)  O:O and say I'm a lover of XTG (across-the-grain) shaving.  While I was doing WTG (with-the-grain) for a long time on a consistent basis, I started shaving XTG a few months ago and I haven't looked back.  It's faster than ATG because I, for one, am not as picky about my XTG shaves being 100% BBS (baby butt smooth), and of course it produces less irritation for those with super sensitive skin who have difficulty (no matter how long they've been shaving!) with against the grain shaves.

IMO, XTG really is the best of all worlds - fast, thorough, non-irritating, reasonably smooth, full of WIN!
So if you haven't tried an XTG shave recently, why not add it to your shaving to-do list?  :D  Unless you're totally and irrevocably devoted (perhaps to a fault) to your BBS shaves, what do you have to lose?   O0

Any other XTG-lovers out there?   :@`  Anything to add?

How about the rest of you...Are you fans?  Why or why not?

I haven't tried it to be honest.  For me across the grain would be from ear to ear, so that would be a bit tricky.  I'll have to try it to see what it produces.

Now that I think about it a little more, I go across the grain on the sides of my head.

Yeah, definitely give it a full go.  It's not hard if you have a trustworthy razor (Gillette Guard in my hand...haven't nicked myself once yet since I started using it!) and good amount of awesome shave product.  It's not as hard as an ATG shave, less pull, especially if you do a WTG first pass, then XTG second pass, which is what I do.

I really like what it does for the sides of my head more than anywhere else.  I always finish up with just a little ATG along my hairline so it's not as easily defined on my forehead (since I have a decidedly unwanted widow's peak and +1" scar right there).

Would love to know what you think.  Let me know how much time it "shaves" off your routine if you try it a few days and get comfy with the process.

As a hint, I'm used to shaving without necessarily using a mirror to see the back of my head, so going side to side (remember not to SLIDE the razor, which is how people cut themselves) really isn't hard when you're focused on the feel of it.  I stop a bit before my ears on either side, then clean up more carefully XTG there too (behind the ears) before I do my ATG hairline thing.  "Sideburns" I do ATG since XTG there would remove my ears as well.

Miss you guys...happy I got to check in.  Good night (or morning/day, wherever folks are)!

I make XTG passes on the back of my head because it's all that seems to get the areas around my scars smooth.

Agree with you, Great.  It's awesome for knocking out that swirly area on top/back/side of your head that we all have (uhm, if you haven't lost it from MPB I guess...in which case, NO WORRIES! - you're sooo at the right place).

What is XTG?

Across the Grain (cutting sideways with the razor)
