After Shaving or Buzzing...Dandruff? Help!
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:46:14 AM »
Hey guys! First post here.

I have yet to commit to shaving or buzzing my hair short. You can see from my picture (which is 3 years old) that I used to look good with a buzzed head before my hair thinned out and the crown of my head went mostly bald and I've gained some weight since then.

Anyways. I have a very dry scalp and get flakes. My question is for guys who have had a dry scalp. Does the scalp still stay dry/flakey after the head is buzzed/shaved? I'm just worried it's going to be a thousand times more obvious after my hair is short.

It's bad enough I'm worried about how I will look with a shaved head.

Any advice with dry scalp? Or even just shaving/buzzing advice for the first time?

Thanks guys!

Welcome mate,

Sorry no advice re - dandruff. A lot of guys say it clears up after shaving.

My advice for shaving for the first time is slow and steady.

Let us know how you get on!

Welcome, Chris! In most cases, dandruff tends to clear up after a head is shaved! Some of the things you can use to help prevent dryness are baby oil, HeadLube, and Vaseline (small amounts if you don't like a shiny head) Good luck and keep us posted when/if you do the deed!

One of the reasons I started shaving my head was to clear up my issue with chronic dandruff (that not even that nasty-smelling T-gel would take care of to my satisfaction).  Shaving my head solved 98% of that!

The other 2% was very easily solved by moisturizing (HeadLube is great for that) and frequent head shaving (which also helps to exfoliate), and using whatever facial scrub suits you.

I always had dandruff when I had hair.  If Selsun Blue shampoo didn't fix it I would use a tiny dab of VO5 when I was wearing dark clothing.  Since I went sly I have had zero problems.  It even happened immediately.

If you decide to go sly, exfoliate your scalp gently every second or third day and use a good moisturizer every day.  Your scalp won't dry out and flake if you follow this routine.
