Question
« on: May 06, 2013, 09:10:13 PM »
For all you fellow Sly guys out there;

Does anyone feel they shave their heads a bit faster out of the shower when they can look in a mirror?

And a follow-up;

How long does it take you to shave your head and any tips on speeding it up?

Thanks!

I struggle mightily for some reason when shaving in the shower (I have a shower stall instead of a traditional bathtub and the stall isn't spacy enough for me to shave the noggin in.) But since I been applying my lather with a brush and warm water, my average head shaving time has dropped from 20 to about 12 minutes (and half of that is spent on the back where my hair is the thickest). The brush makes the hairs looser and easier to shave off, IMO.

Thanks for the input. I'm just finding myself having to shave a good 30 minutes or so in the shower and it's just too much time. I've been using my Schick Hydro 5 lately but finding it's been scraping (even with a new blade) and was thinking of picking up another HB ATX that I had previously but had thrown out when I wasn't happy with it. Also maybe the HeadSlick isn't cutting it anymore? Not a thick enough lather? Was thinking of trying like a Barbasol or something... I just don't know anymore and getting quite frustrated. I've also done it in the shower and out, might have to try it out of the shower again....

It may not necessarily be the HeadSlick, you just may need to add a few drops of Shave Secret to whatever you use...I may try shaving in the shower in the future, but for now, I'm happy shaving at the sink....

I use Shave Secret. It's definitely helped.... but I don't know why it takes me so long... Maybe changing it up so much? From razor to razor?  What do you use these days to do it? What's your routine? I've tried the brush and I didn't think it really added anything to my shave...

I will give you the routine I use on my workdays and time is running short: (this may not work for everyone)

1. Shower with hot water and wash scalp with exfoliant in place of shampoo
2. Mix 4-6 drops of shave secret with a small squirt of HeadSlick (should be no more than two capfuls)
3. Mix a wet brush in the scuttle then apply one side at a time (top first, sides second and third, back last)
4. Shave top first (1-2 minutes)
5. Shave sides second (4 minutes each)
6. Shave back (5-10 minutes)
7. Touch up hard areas (behind ears, nape of neck, sideburns (3 minutes)
8. Apply ice cube and/or aftershave and/or witch hazel and/or rubbing alcohol.

NOTE: If I have less than three days growth, I can accomplish this in less than 20 minutes, more than three days, I may have to clippershave first before applying the razor. How long do you wait between headshaves?

I try to do it every day, but sometimes I miss a day and it's every other day. Even though I'm receding and thinning, my hair does grow fairly quickly. What raozr do you use?

My "routine":

Hot shower, use headshed, rinse it out, lather up with headslick mixed with shave secret, shave the back to the top of the crown first (usually with a shick hydro 5), then go across and over top of the ear, around it, then up the sides, then finally the top...then I rinse, re-lather and go over spots I missed...but I find I'm going over most spots a good 2-3 passes.... then I wash it off with headwash, rinse it off...then splash my head with ice cold water, wipe with witch hazel then use nivea extreme balm for sensitive skin

I think I have gotten my routine down to around the ten minute mark. I am now shaving every second day just to try save some time in the morning.

Things that really sped up my routine include:

- HeadBlade Sport. This was the first major step as I switched my head shaves from a DE.

- HeadLube, instead of a traditional brush and cream/soap. Any lather less cream would help. (although I still honestly believe that a brush and soap provide a better shave).

- Shaving pre-shower, no need to bother with washing my head at the sink after the shave as I go straight into the shower.

- Skipping the whole cold water splash/ice thing. Even though I really love how it feels, shaving my head has become more of a matter of necessity than pleasure lately. I now just use some Alum in the shower and splash on Witchhazel as I get dried.

- Settling for a 99% result instead of pushing for BBS every single time.

- Experience. Things got faster over time, and my skin became more used to the shaving process.

Hope that helps in some way :)

I've tried shaving in the shower shaving before/after shower, for me the time difference is negligible. I'm a little OCD about it and go for smooth instead of quick.

I shave in the shower and I'm very used to it at this point. Space isn't an issue and I've shaved on cruise ships in those small showers. I never use a mirror and my shaves are quick. I don't know how long my shave actually takes but my whole shower from entry to drying off and out only takes 15-20 minutes from the time I step in the bathroom until the time I get out of the shower and put my underwear on starting the prep for my face shave.   This includes getting in, turning the water on, washing my whole body, shaving my head, cleaning my razor, drying it (I blow it forcefully a few times both sides and then use the towel draped over the shower curtain/bar to pat the blade/cart), warm  rinsing my head then a cold water rinse, drying my head, then warm water rinsing my face (in prep for my face shave once I get out) drying my body and getting out. 15 minutes sometimes 20 if I'm not rushing.  My shaves are always close and smooth.  It's become an art form  ;D

I haven't tried in a few years but I've shaved my head in 3 minutes. It was a "How fast can you shave your head" thread some years ago.

I almost always have a shower just before I shave. Takes me about 5-10 minutes now as I do it every morning. Doesn't take long at all with the ATX.

JJ, sorry I took so long to answer your last question, but I accidentally dozed off and clean forgot...To answer your last question, on my off days, I use a DE razor (I'm pretty anal about even ONE small spot so I take my time until I get the smoothness that I seek. As for the days that I'm working, I use the ATX.)I work in a fairly dusty and/or dirty environment and I have to wear a hard hat, so I'm not too obsessed with my headshave there. Shaving your head with a DE is fairly easy once you get used to it, but caution is a must when using it for the first time.
