I started with a Schick Hydro 5 Razor.  Later got a head blade. There is a learning curve with the headblade, but now I use that all the time.  Also use a Gillette Power Pro. A buddy bought it for me. I like it for a with the grain shave when I've skipped a few days. It's a nice 'lawn mower'.

Then Head Blade against the grain for a super smooth finish.

Head Slick is TOPS.

After Shave a rinse with Witch hazel (from Walgreens). Bay rum after shave from Sally's. And head slick glossy lube.  Love the shine.

Welcome to the club, sir. Good luck with your shave tomorrow. You've gotten som good advice in the posts above. The only thing I'll add is that, personally, I alternate between a headblade sport and a Schick hydro 5 when I shave. There both kind of pricey but both give good results. Expect your scalp to be tender at first. It'll take a few shaves for your skin to get used to it.

I alternate between a DE and an ATX....but either way, down the road if you keep a bald head long term, invest in a shaving brush. It lathers your head to the point where you get smoother (and longer lasting) shaves. Good luck, man!

Also everytime I read the title of this thread I read "shy away" as "sly away" and think 'what's wrong with that??'

I know not to use a bic I used it as the term, I have a fusion proglide but should I get a headblade? Also I think I'll do a barber first for safety and to get it all down to as smooth as possible. What else should I use for the first shave?

I hope that it's not too late --do not go to a barber. You will probably do a much better job than a barber and you will save some money. It's easy to shave your head and there is no reason to believe that you will cut yourself. The main "trick" is to go realy slow for the first few shaves. As long as you don't apply too much pressure and go slowly [until you have the skill] you cannot nick yourself.

I use a HB sport almost daily and apart from some nicks on moles when I first shaved my head [not using a HB] I have never cut myself and I never expect to. These modern razors are fantastic -- of course if you want to use a DE or a straight razor then all bets are off.

I buzzed it down to #1 blade on the conair chopper, not guard blade. Anyhow I can't get myself to do a razor should I go to the barber and not be able to chicken out? Once it's razored I think I'll start the 30 day challenge but I just can't take myself to razor it.

It's only a bit of dead material on the top of your head. Cutting it is temporary if you want it to be. Your hair is mostly shaved off already.

You need to get really clear on what you want.

If going to a barber is the only way to get it done then do that but Mr Z above has some sage advice that you would do well to follow and using his method would be quite painless.

One can only speculate -- but I would suppose that you keep shying away because you are scared of what might happen after you shave it. As in all things in life -- bad stuff might happen, good stuff might happen and neutral stuff might happen.

For many of us here shaving our heads bald has produced positive outcomes and my assessment is that this would be true for you also. However, if this assessment is wrong then it is only a matter of letting it grow back. You really have nothing to lose and you will probably gain something positive by shaving it off.

One of the main reasons that I am suggesting that you shave it off is that I can see that you will be leaving behind not only your hair but your conflicted state of mind -- this will be a great relief. Once you shave it off you will know by direct experience whether it is good or bad, short term or long term. No more conflict, wondering or agitation whether you keep it shaved or let it grow back.

You could remove this mental conflict by shaving it off right now.

If the fear is that you are going to cut yourself, start with shaving against the grain first. (back to front on the top, downwards on the back and sides). If it is not smooth enough then, then you can shave against the grain. I have been razor shaving my head for more than five years, and I occasionally cut myself, but the bleeding stops within a couple of minutes with pressure from a piece of tissue. Next time you purchase shaving stuff, invest in a shaving brush and a steptic (sp?) stick for small nicks and cuts. The steptic stick may burn briefly, but it stops the bleeding fast. Don't beat up on yourself, it's human nature to be scared of doing something dramatic like head shaving for the first time....but Y.O.L.O., and it's better to do it and retract if it's wrong than to waste life away wondering what might have been....Good luck!

I shaved today only two nicks and it's smooth I had to buzz it down but it's smooth I'm nervous do y'all think it looks good? I did use my fusion proglide but now the blue line is white did I use the whole razor in one shave?

I've only used DE on my noggin. Get about 4 good shaves per .15$ blade. You can get a good quality starting de for under 50$ and soap is cheap. As long as you don't make it a hobby like I did, you'll save loads.  First few shaves are rough though better keep a cartridge handy for touch up if you want super smooooth.
