first DE head shave-- complete
« on: February 14, 2013, 03:10:45 PM »
Just finished my first DE head shave. Using my brand new Edwin Jagger DE89L. I am pleased. I dig the culture, sustainability and reduced cost. Hopefully as I gain experience I will get faster. I am hoping to eventually progress to a straight.

I don't care for the shaving cream I ordered. I was wondering if any of my fellow forum members know if I can score some of the good stuff at a walgreens/cvs/walmart? or is my only recourse to order something else online?

Either way happy to join the ranks of the wet shavers.

I'm still waiting for the wounds to heal from my first DE head shave ;)
I use a straight on my face & will try the DE on my head again when the scars settle.
I love the shared stories & advice on this forum.

I understand the desire to speed up the shaving process but my advice is to not rush through with a DE. If you rush it's easy to get careless and that leads to mistakes. Remember when using a DE no pressure on the blade, let the weight of the handle be the only pressure provided.
If you have an adjustable DE then use a lower setting until your scalp gets used to it.

Thanks for the replies and advice. I will definitely practice more before trying to be more speedy.

If you want wood wheels, I know a guy. Just got a full set put on my delorean. with spinners.

Just remember no pressure on the blade let the weight of the handle be the only pressure or risk cuts/nicks. Don't fear the blade, use it right and there'll be no problems. Shaving is an art form, master it.

Congrats on using a D/E.

I tried it a couple of times and it didn't feel right for me.

I use a Gem 1912 S/E for my head and although I have only been at at since Xmas i have reduced my actual shaving time dramatically.

Having said that I am a shift worker and as such I don't have to follow a regimented morning shave routine so stick with it and as they all say "no pressure" and it will all fall into place.

I think the joke is that the person who commented about wooden wheels is saying DE shaving is like going back in time?

That's what I was thinking, but DE shaving is light years ahead of carts in terms of shave quality so it doesn't really work very well as an analogy or joke....

Back in the day !  You used what you had around.  Being SLY is not new.  You can use any razor if you take your time in front of sink, or bowl !   O0  Thought I should go in and do it before I blow my pie hole off .  So took my Ole Gillette with adj. settings and kept it at a #5 and head turned out as smooth as a baby's butt.

Shaved my face earlier today with the same razor.  WS blades $1.78  + tax at Wally world  :) O0

Fauxnetic,

Welcome to SBG.

Congrads on your first successful DE shave. I am still trying to master the art of DE shaving myself.  I eventually want to move on to a straight razor but am being cautious and reading up on how to do it right.

Thanks Bluebriz for referring me to the right place to read up on this.
