As I have discussed before, trying to find a brick and mortar shop here in South Africa where you can walk in and buy a quality Double edge razor is not easy. I have used a cheapie “Lion Brand” and two others as given to me by two kind users on this forum.
A few months ago I was at my favorite tobacconist at the Musgrave center in Durban when I saw a few DE razors through the glass cabinet. As usual, there were the cheap Chinese and other makes on offer, but my eye caught a shining stainless steel Merhur 23C. I felt it in my hand and knew that one day I would be back to buy it! I have not been able to stop thinking about buying it ever since. The thought was always lurking at the back of me DE addicted mind.
Over the weeks to follow, I Googled the Merkur to make sure exactly what model it is and read plenty positive user reviews. Yesterday, after a boring day at the office I felt the time was right to treat myself. Hoping it was still there, I stopped off at the tobacconist and it was still there. Yes, this had my name on it, I was meant to buy it! And that is exactly what I did.
I have just had my first shave with it now, and man it is awesome! The thin long handle under the chunky moderate to aggressive head delivered a smooth, clean comfortable shave leaving my face BBS. Now I also have learned that I prefer a long handle to a short handle DE.
I highly recommend this DE razor to any beginner and it is now my prize piece in my shaving arsenal.
