Newbie requesting clipper advice please
« on: December 03, 2012, 01:43:59 PM »
Hi all,

I am new to this site ( and to head shaving in general). I am a 25 year old Caucasian with thick dark hair(mostly on the sides lol). I started losing my hair when I was 20 and now it is very noticeably thin over my entire top. The outline for the classic bald half head of hair can be seen on me.

I have been shaving my head with an Andis clipper no guard 000 setting.  This setting leaves my hair a bit too long for my liking. However, I am not trying to go too low at the moment and look like Mr Clean ( no offense to anyone). I am just looking for basically something in between the length of a 000 clipper shave and a razor shave.

I have been looking into the Wahl balding Clipper as well as the Wahl peanut. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance my bald brothers!

Welcome Bob.
No offense taken, but I'm curious why you're not interested in a razor shave?
I would think with darker hair, your hairline would be a lot more noticable.

Hi schro,

Thanks for the welcome.

To answer your questions;

I do not want a razor shaved head for a couple of reasons. First off I just feel that being 25 is a bit too young to be completely bald. I would much rather be perceived as balding than bald at my age.

Second: I am very thin and have light skin with large features mostly pertaining to my nose and ears. I have always been unique looking but I have always been comfortable with my appearance and well accepted and liked by my peers.  I just feel that a slick razor shaved head would make me look a bit too odd and resemble a sickly person.

I'm sure as you cruise this website, you'll see reference to the "30 day rule". I think you should check it out.

Guy, just do it. I'm 19, not even balding, and a smooth head is an amazing feeling. You'll look younger and older in all the right ways. It feels so good, and when you're older, I'm sure you'll wish you did it sooner. I'm sure you'll look fine with a buzz, but just try the shave.

Welcome to the forums mate.

I'm 26, started shaving bald when I was 25, and let me tell you mate, you're never too young to start shaving  :) If you are already clippering down to a 000 then the razor is going to look no different, but the feeling is awesome! The other option, is that you can razor cut down, but only shave every few days, that way only on teh first day you'll be smooth, and after day 2-3 you'll look like you have a very close buzz. That's how often I normally shave my head, and I think it works well for me, maybe it will for you too.

The feeling of the being completely sly though is the biggest draw card of me, it feels so amazing! Then there is the shine... I get heaps of compliments on my shiny head these days, it is such a boost to the confidence :D

To address your 2 reasons, kudos to you for wanting to be perceived as balding, there are very few out there that feel that way... I'd much rather be perceived as being in control of the situation myself  O0 But on the other point, I think you are being to critical on yourself! I'm yet to see a guy any age, that doesn't loo good completely bald. Without a pic it's pretty hard to tell where you are coming from, but I'm pretty sure you'll kill the sly look!

I think the 30 day rule would be a good thing for you to try, even if you don't shave every day, but every other day or something like that,  it will give you and the people around you time to adjust to the new you, as well as give you time to perfect your technique and routine! Be warned though, you wont be prepared for the compliments and head rubs!

If you take your time to read through the introductions, 30 day and to be or not to be sections you'll find many stories like yours, and it might help you to take the plunge.

Either way, just because you don't shave your head with a razor, doesn't mean you can't be a part of this great community, so just kick back and join in the conversations, and when the time is right for you, we'll cheer you on as you take the plunge.
