Back of the neck irritation
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:19:51 PM »
I have been going sly now for about two and a half weeks.  I am shaving every other day against the grain.  Using headslick, headblade, witch hazel, bump stopper, and an ice rubdown.  I still get pretty bad irritation on the back of the neck.  I also put lotion on about twice a day.  Any other suggestions that I might should try?

Are you using a pre-shave oil (like Shave Secret)? I know a lot of guys who were having irritation found that adding a pre-shave oil was a quick remedy. I've not had trouble with irritation, but I use the oil just because it provides a slicker and easier shave.

If you're interested in Shave Secret it's in the usual drug stores and Wal-Mart (not very exotic). Smells like cloves. I put five drops on my palm and massage that onto my scalp before the HeadSlick. One small bottle lasted about 3 months for me.

My two cents.

I agree with Frontier...a pre-shave oil, keep the neck/head clean and I would go WTG for a week to see if that helps. Good luck!

if you're at the very beginning of being sly, I'd suggest you to shave it with the grain.
especially if you shave every other day.

Let us know if the pre-shave oil helps.  Will be nice if the solution is that easy.
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be sly.

Hi,

If you are talking about this area of the neck as seen in a picture then read below my suggestion.

I shave that are with the grain as it grows in a opposite direction (up) but back of my head hair grows down as for the most of the people. Few first shaves I shaved that area of neck down (ATG) but it was irritating and leaved me with many red dots as well as unpleasant touch there. So I started to shave it WTG. That helped and you can't really see them and you can feel them a bit but those hair are very soft compared to head hair.

In short: If your neck hair grow like mine and you shave your head ATG then for the back of the head just start with the neck and go straight up to the top. In case you shave WTG and then ATG then when going over back try to stop right as you hit the neck part showed in a picture.

Hope this helps and I am sorry for the poor description as my english isn't very good but I am working on it. :)
Going sly might just be one of those things that will change my life :) Thanks! :)

I've just started using baby oil for pre shave, then apply headslick, works wonders as the blades glides across so easily.

I will try a pre shave oil and see how that works for me.

Trac: That is some  good information to know, but the main  area  getting irritation is  the clump of points above the region you circled.

Mauler, I have a few suggestions that may help....Do you wash your scalp after shaving? Another suggestion that has worked for me is rubbing an ice cube over my entire head before applying aftershave...it's good for the pores in your skin. Also many of us swear by Bump Patrol or Bump Stopper (sold in most drugstores/Walmart) to stop bumps and irritation. Good Luck!

I have said this in other ereas of this forum but using clear stick deoderent after you shave works wonders. My former barber suggested it to saying her husband uses it on his head and neck to keep razor bumps down.
