Actually, hairstyle does matter, even on a cruise ship. Grooming policy for the company I work for (Norwegian Cruise Line) dictates that, for a guy, your hair must be at or above the collar and above the ears and no "unnatural"'hairstyles, ie no bright blues or greens or other colors. Being sly is okay, though, unless you're female.
