bald or stubble better
« on: August 25, 2012, 05:27:40 AM »
Hey every one,

I recently buzzed my head down with a no guard and I like it. I am only 21 but I have a receding hair line so as a result you can see when its buzzed real low that my hair is receding. I'm not worried about hiding hte fact i'm going bald. It's jsut that my 'hair line' , or whatever is left of it, looks kind of odd. Wondering if it might look better just done bald :O

Lachy, the technical term (at least around here) for the line is "shadow." Or, as some would write, the "dreaded shadow."

For guys that have dark hair it's difficult to get rid of the shadow. Of course, a close shave versus stubble will make a difference. But the shadow will reappear fairly soon.

Getting some color (like a bit of tan) will minimize the distinction, but it will still appear.

As for bald or stubble ... well, totally unrelated to the shadow question, the difference in feel between them is incredible.

My suggestion ... shave all the way down so you can see how that effects the visibility of the shadow AND you'll have the bonus of feeling a slick done.

If you don't like it, you know it will be back to "stubble" length within a few days.

BTW, it really is a good look for you.

For guys with dark hair, the shadow is something they have to live with.  Even when shaved completely smooth, it's still there.  So, you simply get used to it.  Funny thing is that you'll know it's there, but everyone else will see you as completely bald.

FrontierGuy is right - a little color on the scalp helps.  When you first buzz down or shave, your scalp is being exposed to sunlight.  There's usually a big difference in skin tone between you face and scalp, making the shadow more prominent.  As your scalp gets sun and the skin tone blends, the shadow s less noticeable.

Just what I was thinking.
You'll get to check them both out, Lachy.  Back to back. See which you like better. Most of us here are all about making the noggin as slick as possible, but of course, it's a case of different strokes for different folks... pun sorta intended.
As the others said, the best shadow-fighter either way is sun exposure (not too much, of course).

Oh, and welcome to the site.  :)

You can try shaving your head and see how much you like it. If you prefer the 0 buzz then in a couple of days of growth you'll be there.
I used to buzz my hair with no guard for about 6 months until I went with the razor and then it was just the razor.

Give it a try and let us know how it went.
