I'll agree that HeadShed is quite good also. I've got a couple of bottles and use it now and then to break up my routine.But as I've acknowledged elsewhere, I am a frugal FrontierGuy (some accusations might term it miserly) ... and St Ives (10 ounces for $4.88 including tax at Wal-Mart) versus HeadShed (8 ounces for $8.41 on Amazon with free shipping) ... well, there's not enough difference between them to justify the 100% price difference (49 cents per ounce vs. $1.05 per ounce).
well I did it after as I'm smooth. Probably only do this once or twice a week.
Doing it before makes the hair softer and gives you a more comfortable and smooth shave. The HeadShed recommends doing it before for this reason.

I actually shave WTG, then exfoliate with St. Ives, then shave ATG. Great results.
