One week in
« on: March 14, 2012, 12:17:51 PM »
It's now exactly a week since I first shaved my head, from having relatively long hair.
This week has been quite amazing. I live in halls at university so the first people to see my head were flatmates. Most were completely fine, said it looked good. From the lads there was the odd mickey take - but perfectly fine with that.

As I mentioned, I'm quite lucky with girls so was interested to see how a few I've been 'intimate' with would react. None reacted negatively and most just wanted to rub/kiss my head.

It's been relatively cold/dull here so outside, wandering about I've kept a wooly hat on, in part due to the weather, but also being quite pale and the cold sucking more colour of out my face, I didn't want to look odd.
But, I went to a lecture without my hat and again, comments and reactions were very positive, apparently I have a good head shape which is nice to hear.

I've felt much better in myself for doing it, much less like I've got this huge cloud over me and I can now do things I wasn't able to - wear helmets, play sports, go swimming!!
It's also nice to look in the mirror and not stress about my hair, I've felt much more free and at ease this week, which has in turn affected my mood and attitudes with people, I'm calmer, nicer and not as irritable.

I quite like the look of a day/two days growth, because I still have quite a lot of hair and it goes very dark, it looks quite sharp, so I've been shaving every other day.
I do however, have a few issues:
Shaving - I red bumps straight after a shave that lasts for a few hours, is this just the skin getting used to being shaved?
I can't seem to evenly shave my head, I miss bits and I can't work out which way the grain goes for certain parts of the head - I'm guessing this comes with experience.

Anyway, so far so good and I'd urge people thinking about it, to just do it. It's really a game changer.

Congrats on your first week.  From the sound of things, the change is doing good things for you.

The red bumps can be irritation as your scalp adjusts to being shaved.  Make sure you prep well and use a mild astringent afterwards to calm the skin.  After a while, the skin will toghen up and red marks will be a thing of the past.

As to missing spots, it takes a little practice, but again, you'll get used to it.  Us your free hand to trail behind and feel for missed spots.  Generally the hir on the top grows forward toward the face and the sides and back grow down, but there are infinite variations, so it's a bit of trial and error to find the right way to shave.  Keep trying and you'll find the technique that works.

Congratulations on your first week of sly clean shaving. Sounds like you are taking to it well.

Know what you mean about the razor irritation. I had the same problem, too. Yes, the irritation will go down as the weeks progress. I've been bald now for nearly 6 weeks and notice the razor burns are much less.

Looking back on my (nearly) 6 weeks of daily shaving now and I think it's one of the best personal makeovers you can give yourself. You have the same great look everyday.

Keep it up the good work.
