  With the philips headgroom you have two choices:
  1)with lot of passages you get what you want in terms of closeness but with the unwanted side of irritation.
  2)with few passages you get what you described: not as close as the normal razor, but no irritation.
  
  I use the headgroom. The picture in my avatar it's me after multiple passages
