We have had an issue in the area lately with theives. We live north of a small town which is north of Spokane (the big city) and never have had much of a problem. We always left the doors unlocked and keys in the trucks, never thought anything of it. It started out over the summer, they stole a bunch of tools for the aircompressor, the pull behind sprayer we used to spray the pasture for weeds, and the lisence plates from the boat trailer and horse trailer. That was annoying but we had spares and reported it all and got it cleared up. Over the last week they stole more tools and the thing that gets me is they stole the batteries of of the old farm truck and my work truck! I went to start the farm truck to go get hay and it wouldnt even make a sound so I popped the hood and hmm, no battery. I was annoyed but went to pull the battery from the work truck and it too was missing. That is when I got pissed, new batteries are close to $100 each. I think it might be the new neighbors, they seem like those kind of people. We lost our main gaurd dog back in August and have a pup in training now but he is still young yet to put out so no alarm/warning when someone comes onto the property.
Then yesterday a friend up the road posted on facebook that some guy pulled up in a red blazer with another guy. He got out and headed to the door with laundry detergent and tried to pull the salesman route. She was suspicious so took down the plate number. They didnt stop at any of the other houses so she sent out a warning, thinking maybe they were just looking for houses with no one home This morning a friend from church who lives maybe half hour away in the lake community had all 3 of their vehicles broken into. Everything had been gone through like they were looking for something. They broke windows to get in and didnt steal anything other than some coffee punch cards, a stereo from one, and a couple CDs.
I just had to get this off my chest, ticks me off

Sorry to hear that. I hate to say this, but your story reminded me of something that happened where I lived years ago.
My father answered the door and allowed some "odd" people to use our phone (next to the door they entered). My dad had the sense to arm himself and keep some distance...then asked them to go on their way.
Later that night, about a mile away...they pulled the same routine on an elderly woman up the road. Where they bound and gagged her...stabbed her, leaving her for dead.
Thankfully she pulled through and the perps were arrested.

If you're home during the day and someone comes to your door with what seems like a bs reason. Write down a description of them their vehicle & license plate number & report it to the police. They're probably casing your neighborhood !

We have started making sure the doors are locked and my sisters dog is running loose on the property, her bark is much worse than the bite but it seems to be working. Plus I've been butchering and in a mean moment I decided to put a couple bloody hand prints around and left some cow bones down at the end of the driveway. Its mean/gross but it seems to be working.

The authorities should have let the victims crack the perps heads....

that sucks man, really is disheartining when things like that happen :/
used to feel safe where i currently live with my partner and little lad in a block of flats, 2 of the neighbours are ok but we had a new guy move in a few months back, unemployed 20 somethingish and a regular drug user. There have been a few cases of things being taken and more younger people coming around to get high, the police have been involved but the guy did a runner for a few weeks, so nothings come of that, best part is hes moved back in doing the same stuff and getting away with it! the police have been informed again but its a big waste of time!
thats my rant over haha!
just dont see why we should have to live with that, especially when myself and the other 2 neighbours have children all under 5 years old, really spils the community.
