Brand New and need some help
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:25:20 AM »
So I just started shaving my head completely. It's day 2 and I'm a bit worried. I got the bump fighter razor because I needed to avoid any razor burn and definitely razor bumps at the back of my head. So far I don't have any bumps but my head feels weird. Very sensitive, and I'm kinda nervous since I need to shave again tonight. Trying to shave every other day, and stick with this for at least 30 days. Anybody have some advice on what to do? I guess my skin is trying to toughen up or something, I don't know. Been lurking around here for a few days when I decided to do this thing full time.

Any suggestions or help would be great, especially in aftercare.

It would help as far as expectations. What stages can I expect my head to go through. I'm African American, so I'm deathly afraid of the nasty razor bump look. The bump fighter razor works amazing on my face and around my goatee, but I'm really wondering how my head will react and how long it will take to toughen up to get used to the every other day shave.

Note: I tried to shave my head once before, with a mach 3. Maybe 2 years ago. The back of my head got those nasty bumps and I decided that it was not for me. Prior to my recent shave I use Wahl balding clippers for the super close buzz cut, which probably looks like 3 to 4 days growth from being fully shaved. I guess I just wanted the ultimate clean look. Hopefully this bald shaving goes well and doesn't elude me.

Help a brotha out!!

Welcome to SBGs!!! 8)

I don't know what to tell you but mix and match products until you find what is right for you.  My fiancĂ©e is black, so I will ask her.  I do have a friend in Texas who swears by some products he uses...but he has never spoke of the nasty bumps you are talking about other than he doesn't get them.  If you want me to send you the info on that...let me know or IM me.

Other than that, I'm sure you will find the perfect routine and products that work for you with a little practice, plus trial and error.

Welcome BaldnProud. Stick with the bump fighter razor to see how it turns out, also there is a product called bump patrol that you may want to try. I would advise shaving with the grain as much as possible, to avoid any irritation and bumps until your scalp gets used to the blade.

That "weird" feeling is probably the numbness that we all felt after the first couple of shaves.  It will go away very soon.  After a while, you will long for that feeling again.  So, I say enjoy it.

Also, check out the advice that others give for how to shave your head.  Make sure that you do the proper pre-shave steps.  I always shower first and let the hot water loosen up my scalp and hairs.  It really helps.  I also strongly suggest using Blad Guyz Clear Shave Gel.  I have sensitive skin and it works best for me.

Good luck and welcome.

Welcome!  I agree with Bem, it's probably just the numbness of the first couple of shaves.   O0

Welcome. I'd recommend putting some 100% Aloe Vera on as soon as you get done shaving. It will help sooth.
