Face shaving:Against the grain of not?
« on: October 23, 2010, 11:40:13 AM »
Hey,
I've been shaving my head for the last 5 years.
Recently,I started using HeadBlade and the results are amazing!
But alas,I have problems with my facial shave,as I have a goatee and when shaving my face,I shave with the grain, and against the grain under the chin and chicks.
It seems pretty hard to go against the grain on the upper side of the face(the chicks and above the chin).
My dad told me I have to strech my skin to the other side, and the to shave against the grain, but still,it looks to be complicated.
How do you get the perfect face shave?
Thanks,
Yohai.

I just shave my cheeks with the grain on the first pass, to get off the majority of the stubble. Then against the grain on the second pass. Doesn't seem too complicated. I sort of anchor the skin at the chin to keep the cheeks taught during the up-strokes, but no complicated stretching.

Pretty much the same here...

I only go ATG under my chin it's the only place that seems to require it.

I shave my face WTG only, I don't mind the little stubble there.

Thank goodness bootedbear replied. I had NO idea what "chicks" were.  :*))

Try this YohaiM: Take the index finger of your support hand (the hand that is not holding the razor) extend it like you were pointing at something, and lay it along and slightly beneath the jawbone. This will hold the skin in place while you draw your razor against the grain.

Shaving your face against the grain with the Headblade really needs to be done slowly.

OK,that method works for the cheeks.
What about underneath them?
I shave from the bottom of my neck up,'till the goatee, and it feels there's still stubble.(Even though I do a second pass)
Should I try shaving from the top to the bottom of the neck on the second pass?(Meaning, what's the direction of the grain in that area,or maybe I shave well, and that's the best result I can achieve?)
Thanks,
Yohai.

Yeah, that's a problem area. I've never gotten it completely un-stubbley either.

Cheeks, bottom to top on the second pass,

Most of my facial hair especially on the bottom of my face grows left to right, weird grain pattern...  :Xo!  To get it close I have to go against the grain and it will cause some irritation especially with a used blade.  I keep those areas well lubed when I come back for that second ATG pass!  O0

The crown area-already know that.......
But facial and head shave isn't exactly the same......
Anyhow,I think I'll stick to my old shaving routine,as to the part below the cheeks and chin,as my skin is really sensitive there, and it's a little redish now.
Thanks guys,you're the best.
Yohai.
