OCTOBER is
Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country, so today
(9/22/2010), one of the historical local bakeries (
HAYDEL's BAKERY -
http://www.WorldsLargestKingCake.com ) baked, displayed and then sold
"industrial-size slices" of a king cake that wrapped around the outside perimeter of the
NEW ORLEANS SUPERDOME - not only once - but
TWICE!!
KING CAKE: A cinnamon roll-like cake topped with sugary icing and traditional
Mardi Gras colored sprinkles (
purple,
green, and
gold) on the outside. Customers also have their choice of filling being of various
mouth-watering treats as well - everything from an
apple filling, to
cream cheese, to
pecan praline, and
everything in between!!

Traditionally, the cakes have a
trinket inside -
(a plastic baby) and legend is that whoever happens to get the piece of cake with the baby inside
buys the next King Cake. Needless to say there have been some people who have gone to great lengths to
HIDE the fact that they indeed got the baby, so as not to fork over a couple of bucks for the next round. (LOL)
Total length of the "SUPERDOME" King Cake is 5,300 feet long and it weighs 8,688 lbs!!
There were over
100 prizes ranging from
luxury hotel stays and
restaurant gift certificates to
Saints Tickets and a
Saints "Big Daddy" recliner.
All prize winners also will get a chance to win a NEW CHEVY SILVERADO!
Tickets could also be bought online
(via the website above) and the
MAGIC of a
New Orleans King Cake could be delivered right to your door!!
It was an exceptional day here in New Orleans - despite the 90 degree heat!!
A good time was had by all for a GREAT CAUSE!!
