Sly in college?
« on: June 21, 2010, 05:38:16 PM »
I will be starting college this upcoming fall and am debating if I should start sly.  I got a #0 all over about a month ago and dont know if I should grow it all summer and then get it trimmed up before I go.  Or just go in sly and see how it works.  I am going out of state and will not really know anyone and I am not losing my hair if that means anything.  Just wondering what yall think I should do, because I dont know if there are many college sly guys out there.

It will be a perfect time to give it a try.  You'll be meeting a bunch of new people who have no preconceived notions of what you "should" look like so you'll feel a lot less self-conscious about it.  You clearly want to give it a try.   Scratch the itch, man.   Shave it now and get some color on the dome and you'll be a sly veteran by fall.   ^-^

last semester I had hair, this upcoming semester I will be sly. I think it would be good time to transition into it, meeting a bunch of new people already sly it wont be a shock to them either.

Yeah... starting college is a pretty good time for style changes in general. No reactions... it's just how people will meet and know you.

It depends upon your personal "style".

When I was in college, there was one guy whose hair seemed to grow very fast.  He changed his hair about every two months.  He would start with a mohawk, keep it a couple weeks, then shave it off.  Two months later it would be a sideways mohawk, diagonal mohawk, an "X", a topknot, diagonal the other way.  The point is, everyone knew who he was..

Sly isn't as unusual as it was back then, but it does draw some degree of attention.

If you don't mind standing out in a crowd, then go for it.

If you want to "maintain a low profile", then don't.

For what it's worth, I work in a college town (Ann Arbor, MI) and see plenty of sly college kids (including those without MPB, and a handful of young women). I think it might be past its peak among the trendy crowd, but I haven't been paying attention lately.

Hey, I had a diagonal mohawk for a month or so back in, hmm, about 1987 or so. It grew out and flopped over.

All I know is that I wish I would have gone Sly while I was in college.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

I am slightly contrarian here.  I say, if you have a full head of hair and you are heading off to college, why not take advantage of it and have some fun with "What the hell is that haircut called, Dude?"  If you are fated to be MPB, you will have years, YEARS, down the line to shave and be Sly.  Sly is like infinity; once you reach it, you can't go any farther.  Why start at infinity?   Oh, I suppose you could get tats on the shaved dome, but that's a little on the "beyond the fringe" side (to make a weak pun).

When I was in college, close to half a century back (not quite fifty years), crewcuts were as common as can be, but not a Sly to be seen, except for a few in the Marines section of NROTC.

You're practically there already, with a short buzz like that, going bald is not really going to make any difference.  Just shave it bald and enjoy it.  You would be surprised at how many guys have gone bald.  It's a trend now a days, alot of guys are noticing the bald look and are not hesitating to go bald themselves.  I know becuase I see it here in Texas. Everywhere I go there is atleast 3 or 4 bald guys by choice.

I just went to my orientation yesterday, and although no one had shaved heads a lot of kids did have buzzcuts.  Maybe I will take the plunge now and go for it, it has been about 8 weeks since I did the clipper shave.

Why not? It will grow back.  College is a great time, an adventure.  There will be enough time after you graduate to conform, join the herd mentality.  Study hard, party hard, live the life--it is so short a time to try so many new things, expand your life intellectually and socially.  You're going to enjoy it.

Your post reminds me of the day I decided to go Sly in college.  Bear in mind, it was 1983...and everyone was into the Duran Duran/Flock of Seagulls hair.  Well, everyone I knew thought I'd lost my marbles.  Some people thought I'd joined a cult.  Most people were scared of me; the stares I got in the mall were priceless.  Because of the reaction I got, I didn't stay Sly, but I wish I'd have had the confidence to keep it shaved.  In 2010, I don't think I would have any hesitation, since the shaved look is practically the new baseline for the modern adult male.

Scratch the itch.  It's the only way to feel better.  You obviously want to try it; otherwise you wouldn't still be considering it.  Even if you end up not liking it, at least then you'll know and can stop wondering about it.

This is the perfect time in your life to experiment a bit with your appearance.  Enjoy the freedom.  Nobody at college is going to care, and people who have never seen you with hair will never give it a second thought.
