First off im happy I stumbled upon this site..hopefully Ill learn a lot from it! Ok ive been shaving my head for about 4 years now and I realized through trial and error that my work helmet causes my head to break out periodically. Im a fireman in a busy urban dept so the only time I get a break from the helmet and hood is when im the chauffeur. Its seems to be worst when I sweat more. Ive tried shaving the night before my shift so my head isnt as tender. I also use acne pads through out the shift to try and clean my head. I did a search and I read that some suggest a skull cap which I will try but I hope the chief dosent give me a hard time since its technically not part of the uniform. Does anybody have any experience or a solution for my situation?? Thanks for the help!!
Welcome to the forum, Enem178. Since you have figured out that the problem lies with your helmet, and not other probable causes, the only suggestions I can think of is to:
1. Thoroughly cleanse the helmet/harness regularly.
2. Wear a bandanna or Coolmax type helmet liner/skull cap (if allowed)
3. Wipe your head with an astringent/cleanser soaked cloth immediately after each deployment
dealing with mechanical acne is tough. I had it bad in the army. My brother is a firefighter and shaves his head. He has had problems with acne for years but now he uses that Proactiv stuff religulously. His acne is much, much better now. I don't think there's much you can do when the helmet is on unless they let you wear one of those polar cap liners (that meshy stocking-like material). We were allowed to wear those in the winter and the acne was better.
Thanks a lot for the advice! I think ill pick up one those skull caps and continue to use the acne pads through out the day. Again thx!
Yeah, I'll echo the helmet liner. Underarmor makes one for football helmets. You might also check out Bald Guyz head wipes. A lot of guys around here use them. But ultimately I think they are just baby wipes without any scent. I would try some of those pocket size baby wipes if you you can take the the jokes that your coworkers will throw at you. And Ozzy is dead on, CLEAN YOUR HELMET! I clean mine about once a month, but I'm a Volie so I don't wear mine as much as you do. Oh yeah, welcome to SBG
Enem,
Welcome Aboard, Sir! Glad you found us!! I
GUARANTEE you're gonna' like it here!!
I also shave the night
BEFORE going on duty, but I don't have the issues you seem to be having....
Hmmm... what does your shaving routine consist of?
Once again,
Welcome to the SLY Side!! - Cap'n Noodles -
I'm naturally bald and, therefore, don't shave my head. However, I find that many times a year I injure my scalp in some way: on the side of a golf cart; on a low shelf, the latest, on a car sunglass holder that I forgot to fold back in near the head liner.
Regardless, it's always taken a long time to heal, for some reason, longer than any other part of my body takes to heal, regardless of what I put on it...until I found this product in Phoenix at Chakra 4 herb and tea house. I''ve been going in there to pick up psyllium husks, and was looking for something to put on a pre-cancerous sun damage area on my sideburn.
Well, it didn't help that, but I tried it on a cut on my scalp. Well, I'm here to tell you, it cut down the healing time to more than half. It's called, Garden Salve, and one of its main ingredients is bees wax. I told the girl who makes it up in batches, "It's like Melon Spackle". I told her I would find a forum and share it, so there you go.
