Scaling and irritation = psoriasis?

Howwdy :)

A few months back, I saw my doc about a skin condition she readily diagnosed as psoriasis (scalp mainly) and although it's incurable, it totally disappears when I shave my head a couple times a week.... if I just wanna buzz it, the whole mess reappears and takes about a week to clear up.

Anybody know of a anti-psoriasis lotion or something similar?

  Hey, I've had mild psoriasis on and off since I was a teenager and I've pretty much tried everything from steroid cremes to herbal concoctions and absolutely nothing worked until finally this year I got a new dermatologist and he prescribed me the non-steroid creme Protopic.  Like you stated, psoriasis is uncurable but this creme has worked wonders for me.  I put a thin layer of it on as soon as I notice redness or flaking appearing and it clears it up quickly and I stop using it until the next outbreak. 
  I get it in a 30 gram tube and it lasts about 6 months for me and costs I believe $40 if you don't have insurance or benefits.  Hope that helps.

If it's incurable, why not just stay shaved?  One of our prominent members, SCHRO, had the same situation and since shaving is VERY happy to have the condition gone PERMANENTLY....as well as be sporting the SLY look PERMANENTLY.

Ricecub, Robmeister is 100% correct. For years, I suffered from sebhorreic dermititus, a hereditary condition that absolutely sucks (hygiene has nothing to do with it). I used to get the embedded dandruff that would result in sores if I scratched or picked at it (I know, gross). It doesn't appear to contribute to hair loss, as both my brothers have it and they still have all their hair. However, since I shaved my head on New Year's Day (can't believe it's been almost 3 months), I have had NO RECURRENCE of the condition. My scalp feels healthy, no itching, and the best part.....I'M SLY.

I can't recommend keeping your head clean shaven for the health of your scalp.

I have a younger brother who has psoriasis quite severely. Has his entire life, well it first reared its ugly head when he was a couple years old. It's totally hereditary and non-catchable is about the best thing. There are many many gimicks out there, that will steal your money FAST. My brother has dealth with them all. Let me touch base w/ him in the near future and find out what he's doing these days. I do know his flares up in the spring/summertime, as compared to fall/winter... here in Iowa. We have all 4 seasons and all 4 to the extreme. It's great to hear your shaving might actually be helping. It sounds to me, just as a brother of someone with it, like you have a small case, or was actually mis-diagnosed (as I actually was once by a "moron" Dr.- yep they exist too). Since your skin condition seems to be minor, sounds like the practice of a razor compaired to the trimmers clears it up for ya a bit, sweet. I will say this, when I use clippers I get quite the psoriasis looking irritations sometimes myself. If I maintain better, with frequent razor shaves, the irritation completely disappears. I hope this sheds a lil light and I will get with my brother for any current stuff he may be using or techiques for dealing with psoriasis these days.  All my best, ~Yeti
