I have done them before both type and voice chat. and honestly they are pretty cool. I don't think it will detract from the main sight, but it would give people a chance to get to know each other even a bit better because it is an instant response. Just my 2cents on the subject.

Let's look at a several things:
1. Chat rooms can be fun ... but they need to be safeguarded. It would need to be open to registered members of the board. If it is open to all, it could get quite nasty unless constantly monitored.
2. Much of what is learned (at least by me) from this site comes from reading posts. Look at it this way, if you miss a class you can always learn from the book. .. but you can't recapture the lecture.
3. It would offer greater camraderie (sp) and a chance to meet people.
Just my 3 cents!

I think it was a great idea. But (there's always a but), after doing some research, I think I'm going to stick with the forum as the mode of communication. There's a place in your profile to add your IM client names so that if you want to chat you can.
My main reason for making this decision is that I like that the information that is presented to the users can be viewed anytime and the person doesn't have to be "in person" to get the info. There's also moderating and security issues that I have to worry about as well.

I agree. We are all in so many different time zones, it's difficult to get everyone online at the same time. I, for one, would miss a lot of info, if I had to be there "live" when it was posted. At least the forum can be read at any time and is archived if you want to refresh your memory about something.

I just made a post about adding a chat room. But after reading all of this ...I good with not having a chat room. IT does get way out of hand. I was a moderator of a chat room and after about 2 weeks of that ...I threw in the towel...told them to stick it. YOu get all kinds of weirdos in there and then they want to turn it into a sex / get me off sort of chat room. Too much risk and security going on there....so I will just continue using up all of my 10 post per hour in pms and be happy with that.. lol
See ya

TimmmJ there are forum chatrooms that you have to log onto. That keeps all the outside undesirables just where they should be. On the outside.
I'll volunteer to police the new SBG chatroom.

Come on TimmJ join the team. It won't be so bad. The rules for the chatroom will be the same as for posting on this site. "Treat everyone with dignity and respect."

Don't really see the need for a chat box. Want to talk in depth to one of the sly bros, just need to ask in a pm if they are willing to provide a phone number. Way less complicated, way more personal.

I agree with Paul........... I love the format the way it is. The PM feature is great for 1 on 1 communications.
Just my opinion.......
