Last day of second year, tomorrow--I begin my third year
« on: October 11, 2009, 07:58:27 AM »
Well, today is the last day of my second year sly O0.  I begin my third year tomorrow, and I have no regrets at all.  My mpb has progressed as evidenced by the smaller shadow, basically no shadow on the runway anymore.
I started here, and I want to thank all the guys who helped me through the first couple of weeks, dealing w/ the issues that come from a major change and acceptance of the fact I was bald.  I've done what I can during these two years to pass that help along to others.
Sort of an amuzing story, fits here as well as anywhere.  I was waiting for my flight home this past Friday.  A couple was in the waiting area with me, and he had this really strange looking head of hair.  I wound up sitting right behind him, and then it came to me, the part was mechanically straight and ended without any circular pattern, at the temples, thinner slightly different colored hair-salt and pepper, poked out from under long hair--then I realized this poor guy was wearing a toupee--problably expensive since it mixed black and grey hairs pretty well--but it was the mechanical straightness of the hair in addition to the part.  When the flight was over, the back of the toupee had been lifted away from the rest of the hair, looked like a duck getting ready to dump ;D ;D ;D.  I went into the men's room on the way to the baggage claim, and then ran into him again--his wife must have noticed the hair, it was now flattened down again.  Poor guy, he would have looked so much younger w/o the rug.
Take away, there's more work to be done guys, and I'm ready for my third year of it.  Lurkers, visitors, guests--we want you to be as free as we are--so read up, see all the inspiring stories of guys chucking the rugs, dropping the drugs, and chopping off the combovers.  It's a great life after you accept the mpb and deal with it honestly--we think that means shaving it.  Look around, we're every where--additional point of the flight, at least four other shaved heads on board.

Congrats on 2 years of slyness Saint.  We took plunge around the same time, so I'll always remember your anniversary.

All of your points are so true.  I continue to be amazed by the number of guys that don't face reality and take various measures in an attempt to hide the obvious.  I was one of them, for many years, but still hate to see others agonizing over an issue that has such a simple solution.

Happy Anniversary !!!

Andrew

Nice post Paul!! And congrats on two years SLY....especially since it took a while for the wife to go with it...
Mike, one of your best qualities is your optimistic view of life, and in this particular case, my wife!  She doesn't like it, but she has decided to accept it.  We had a little talk.  She like her mother, and many women also suffer from hair loss.  My wife, when I finally pointed out to her that her problem w/ my head was really a problem with hers, exploded.  Then, once the subject was in the open, she just said she was going to keep up w/ her hair her way, and by implication I think, accepts that I will deal with mine my way.  Unfortunately, shaved heads for, shall we say, "mature" ladies just isn't done.  They are forced to go to wigs, as my mother-in-law did.
So that's where we are with this, and I don't think there's much chance she'll embrace my baldness, but she's accepted it.  That's enough for me.
Again, this brings to mind a friend of the family, he's in his late 80's now, but he's on wife #3, outlived the other two.  No. 2 had baldness--absolutely skin head.  She had the courage to have the fringe coiffed into a page boy, always neat, never a hair out of place, and bald as a billiard on top, and she was always dressed immaculately.  She attended all the social affairs w/ her husband, and everyone accepted it by never commenting on it or making any remarks to others.  She was one of the elite of the City, supporting arts, charities and her church.  But, this is New Orleans and like a few other places we accept and value people who have distinctive personalities and character--think Tennessee Williams, Anne Rice, and less famous people like Ruthie the Duck Girl.
I don't think my bald head puts me anywhere in that league, there are just too many guys shaving now days.  And the extra is I still get compliments on my appearance on a regular basis--and all of us who have gotten rid of rugs and combovers have and continue to enjoy that.  I never had anyone compliment my combover, nor have I ever met a guy who did.
Thanks again for the favorable, if somewhat imaginary, idea that my wife has embraced the head.  O0  Keep that attitude--it's a real model.

Thanks, I've been getting a lot of positive feedback on the beard--I really didn't expect such an overwhelming acceptance and admiration from everyone.  But, take whatever you can get when it comes to compliments.

Paul, Congratuations on year II. IMO your apperance sets the standard for the Sly look.  The beard just adds icing to the cake.  I'm so envious.
