Men & women have dyed their hair from time immemorial, and to say it's covering up and equivalent to not being forthright is not only a gross overstatement it is also simplistic.  One of the oldest dyes, henna, is still in use.  Our grandmothers added a "blue" color to their white hair--hence the nickname for older ladies, "Bluehairs".  Coloring hair is cosmetic, nothing more.  It's not a statement of moral character at all.
Frankly for a lot of guys, such as myself, shaving "covers up" a balding scalp, effectively hiding it in plain sight.  And I don't think that peeling the peach is wrong because it hides that condition.

IMO when people are in the habit of using coverups for things like gray hair or slyness that, when taken to extreme, causes me to question their forthrightness. If they can't be truthful about who they are how can they possibly be truthful in what they say?

Your whole premise is based on the myth that we are defined by our hair color. There is nothing inherently deceitful about coloring one's hair, beard, or any other grooming technique.  One could just as easily make the argument that guys who shave a full head of hair are trying to appear as something they are not, when in fact they are merely adopting a style that makes them feel more comfortable, confident, and at ease.

Getting to the Grey point of our lives, is, really a privilege, denied many.
Far better than the alternative.

Further, most of us don't get paid for being pretty.

How does one arrive at the conclusion that it is a myth that we are defined by our hair color? In our consumer oriented society, which is based upon the importance of form over function, hair color is a standard that we have allowed to be implemented in terms of things like employment, dating, etc. Deny it all you will, it does not appear to me to be a myth.

It is a myth.  We aren't defined by our hair color.  Others may have perceptions of us or attach labels to us based on our hair color, but that doesn't define who we are.  Never empower anybody to define you based on your outward appearance.  Furthermore, making judgements about a person's honesty based on whether or not they color their hair says more about the person making the judgment than it does about the judged.

The original poster in this thread is in his 20s and prematurely greying.  It's perfectly natural that he would want to cover up the grey.  He isn't trying to look younger than he is; he's trying to look how most people in his age group look.  What's wrong with that?  And even in the case of someone who's a little older who is trying to look a little younger -- if coloring their hair/beard makes them feel better about themselves, who are we to criticize them and label them as dishonest for doing so?

I have to side strongly with Razor X. Assuming someone who colors their hair/beard for whatever reason is otherwise dishonest is completely specious.

Obviously, I don't color my own facial fur, but my partner does. Why? Because his gray is coming in unevenly and he doesn't like the lop-sided appearance. Once it evens out some, he plans to stop coloring, but even if he wasn't so what? Judging his honesty based upon this is not only silly, it steps firmly into ludicrousness.

OK, you got me. Glad I didn't point a finger at anyone in particular.

Personally I have no problem with gray, kind of like it, but I used the stuff now and then.  At about 50 gray my beard looked scraggly and thin. Color helps with that. Have been using Redken Color Camo. It blends in the white hairs by actually dying them gray, washes out over a week or so.

My thoughts are, let it grow gray and see what happens. You may start liking it. I myself absolutely hated it when I saw  first gray hairs in my beard. Just had solved the hair loss "problem". But, there are so many other things to worry about. I soon got to not care about it and now I almost like it when I think about it. I'm 38. Beard is salt and pepperish, still on the pepper side. Anyway, painting the beard seems like a nuisance. I don't know if it really is, but I don't miss any extra grooming tasks.

Keep it clipped short,  but the fact is that gray beards age you quite a bit.

How long does that take?

BaldnBearded, what did you end up deciding to do?  I just posted on Marshed1000's very similar topic.  Like yourself, my grey exploded basically all at once.  My advice would be to try it.  I've never dyed my hair, so I realize the other challenge you may have is the reactions from others which, as a young, bald and bearded chap, you are presumably an old pro at enduring.

Hey guys, been a while since I've posted, been really busy with dental school.Been a bald guy for a year as of November, crazy to think I was ever insecure about shaving my head.I honestly would not take my hair back if someone told me they could give me a full head of hair again.Ive definitly made the full transformation into a bald man and love it.Since posting this topic,Ive had various beards and goatees but up until a few months ago,I still was dying all the gray with Just For Men.In September I finally stopped dying the gray and changed my beard back into a goatee.I updated my profile pic from a photo taken of me in the end of September.Do you guys think I'm pulling off the gray okay or do you think it looks ridiculous on me?Keep in mind I'm only 25,almost 26.Somedays I really like it,others I'm insecure about it.Im definitly gonna try and stick with it though as applying Just For Men all the time is a real pain in the ass.

I'm a LOT older than you -44- and still cover most of the gray.  It started turning when I was in my late 20's and really didn't like it.  I still don't.  I think it makes you look older than 25 but that's only my opinion.  If you are ok with the look, I wouldn't change it.

I do find I have to do touch-ups every 2 to 3 days.  It doesn't seem to hold up well in my hair and my hair grows very fast.  But it is quick and easy to do.
