how to cut hair very short ?

That is perfect for dad.  He refuses to go completely shaved, but has been buzzing his hair to a zero for years since the MPB really kicked in.

Welcome! And not to worry. If you were to mess up with the clippers you can just shave. I don't say that out of bias, I just mean that if you're looking for that close you could shave and be back there in a matter of days. Best of luck on the purchase!

Welcome iCyborg, sounds like the clipper route is right for you at this point.

I would check out either Wahl or Remington, as they both have a great selection and numerous types to choose from. Wahl is the tops in my opinion.
Just start with one of the longer guards/attachments and go from there until you get the desired length.

Here is the one I use.  It is inexpensive and easy to clean.  I believe I got mine at Target.  It did a perfect job on my head, face and goatee.  Great for trimming stray hairs and also has the nose/ear attachment.  Also has the wide and narrow attachments for precision trimming.  And it was only $20.

You should get a Wahl Chrome Pro Haircutting Kit. Wahl is one of the most
well know brands and they have the quality to back them up .
I got mine at walmart for about 35 dlls and it included :
a clipper, 10 regular guides, 2 guides for around the ears,
1 eyebrow guide, a pair of scissors, a barbers cape, 2 combs,
clipper lubricant and a clipper cleaning brush.

Also if your planning of using a machine for both your beard and your head i
would suggest getting hair clippers instead of beard trimmers ( believe me, its
 a nightmare trying to cut all your hair with a tiny beard trimmer,
 and it keeps getting jammed because theres just not enough
 power from those tiny motors ).

If I might ask, why was it not for you Mike.?

The balding comb on it didn't cut as close as my old Vidal Sasson clippers set at "Fine." I want my hair as short as possible before shaving and while it was a great head buzzer, it wasn't truly a balder.
