My vote would be for the Panasonic Linear shavers. I bought an ES8243 (not sure about that number, check some of the threads in product reviews). They make 4 head shavers that work wet or dry. The 8243 works fine for me whether I use it in the shower with foam or walking around the house. For dry shaving I always use Williams Lectric Shave. Those blades cut so fast that a truly dry shave with it would leave the scalp looking like a strawberry

Agreed!  The Panasonic Linear ES8243 is arguably the best electric out there for head shaving.

I use a Panasonic Linear ES7109, this is a great razor for getting a pretty good shave. If I don't allow the re-growth to get too bad then it handles it well.
I even like the little battery powered travel razor that came with it.. it does a surprisingly good shave. It is fair to say that a blade will always get your head super smooth, but for a quick shave that it acceptable then I am happy with the Panasonic.

I have the newest highest level Braun (don't know the number) and it does a fine job. Nothing like a blade though. Initially as close but nowhere near the staying power. Have you tried another razor, say the M5. I haven't cut myself with the actual shaving part yet (2 nicks with the stupid trimming blade). Some people, i'm afraid, just shouldn't use the headblade. It's great if you have a nice smooth round head, but if you have any ridges, valleys, etc. that's when it gets you.

I'm glad that I found this post.  I was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, and I'm currently undergoing treatments at the Duke Brain Tumor Center in Durhman, NC.  I'm getting daily radiation and chemo, and I'm optimistic about my chances.  All is well here.

I am very much a Type A personality, and I am doing everything in my power to beat cancer using assertive nutrition, fitness, meditation, and other personal techniques.  Part of my strategy includes eliminating unnecessary metals and toxins in my body, so I've switched to electric shaving for my face.  I bought the top of the line Braun electric foil razor, and it is working very well.

Because of the radiation and chemo, I'm at a point where it is almost time for me to shave my head bald.  I'm ready to do it.  I'm going to a barber to have it done for the first time, but I'm hoping I can use the Braun to maintain it.  I'll switch to cream and regular razors if I have to, but I'm hoping this works for me.

Has anyone used the Braun foil razor with success to keep their head bald?  Any tips or tricks?  Also, I am getting a lot of skin irritation because of the radiation aimed at my head.  I'm going to try some of the Nutragena products to manage it.  Any advice about that?

Thanks for considering the questions of a total noob.  :)

-Joe

That "stupid trimming blade" is why I gave up on he M5. Also, I have known Todd  since the beginning and use most of the HB products but have never been able to use the HB even after numerous tries.

The Conair Cleanhead does a pretty decent job:

Best of luck to you in your battle with the tumor.

Good luck.  It's smart to get ahead of the hair thing.  My son-in-law has a good friend who's a brain cancer survivor and he's stayed sly.

My vote goes to the Conair Cleanhead too.

And for ultra-cheap, late day touch-ups, that little battery powered MICROForce razor gets really close.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.  I think I'll go with the headblade based on what I've read here and elsewhere.  It seems like a good place to start.  I've read that the key to making that work is to not apply too much pressure when you are shaving with it.  I'm honestly a little apprehensive about the whole thing.  It's just that it's a change for me, but one that is inevitable given my current situation.  I'm OK with it, but it's just a change.

As you can see on the blog site that I'm keeping (link posted in my profile and in my signature), I had a round of surgery earlier this summer, and I have a 7 inch scar that runs across the top of my head.  Once I shave it all off, I'll need to wear hats so that I don't freak people out.  I won't have the nice smooth and sly look.  That's OK, but it's just one more aspect of this that I need to deal with.

I'll post back once I take the plunge.  Thanks again for the advice!  I really appreciate it.   O:O

BTW, who's timbo1941, and what's the link to me?  I assure you this is no fantasy for me.  I only wish that were the case.  Take a quick look at my blog to get a small dose of my reality.  Not sure about that comment....maybe I'm taking it wrong or just misunderstand.

Best wishes, peace, and good health to all.

That's not just the key, (as if it's a little known tip of some kind) it's actually in the instructions. To press down is simply to use it wrong. Though it could use a little more weight.  If it didn't need it, the S4 Shadow wouldn't get reviews as being better (due to it's weight).

Phigg,

Thanks for the reinforcement of the need to be sensitive to the pressure applied.  In your opinion, is the S4 worth the cost?  It actually costs more than some of the electrics.  I thought I'd just start with the sport version.  I'm a total newbie here.

There is nothing wrong with starting with the sports model. If you don't like it you have not spent that much. You can always up grade. But myself I might start with the Mark 3. Less chance of cutting yourself.

I don't honestly know, I don't have one myself.  I'm going by what I've read here from other's reviews and opinions.   Personally I think $100 for it is nuts.  I'd just as soon drill out a cavity in my regular HB and insert/glue a small, round, lead fishing sinker in there! That might work as well, lol.
But you definitely don't want to push down on the thing yourself, it's too hard to monitor the pressure with the sensitivity and consistency required to be safe.

I started with the Sport and switched to the S4 Shadow when it was introduced.
IMHO it is worth the money, because it feels better to shave with it. Kinda like tool vs. toy. Plus, it seems to be very durable.

It's a little bit similar to using a Bic ballpoint pen vs. say a Caran d'Ache. There's a good amount of self-pampering involved.  :)

Since the HeadBlade isn't for everyone, I recommend to start with the Sport.

I spoke with the radiologist yesterday and today and asked when my hair would start falling out.  He said it would happen any day, and it started this evening.  Big clumps of hair started coming out, so I went to the barber and had it all taken off.

It feels kind of odd to me.  He used a foil electric razor to cut it down to the skin instead of a blade.  He said it would be less likely to break-out.  Then he put a hot towel over it, which felt great!

Not exactly sly, but that's not why I had to do it.  I was surprised to see that the scar on top of my head really isn't too bad.  It's just a line.  I thought it would be frankenstein-ish, but it's not.  I'm glad about that.  It means I don't have to wear a hat all the time.

I'm still wondering about the comment about this being a fantasy for me.  What's that all about?  I don't get it...

Spider, the sly look is fine on you.We had a few people that keep posting every day saying how they were going to shave. They would ask all kinds of questions  and say why they were going to shave and go on and on. In the end they just stopped posting and nothing else was heard from the again. That's the fantasy that was mentioned.
The best of luck with your treatments.

Thanks to everyone for the tips and ideas.  I feel great, and I'm proud to be bald!   O:O

I'm sporting my new skin with pride.  The barber told me that a little time in the sun will balance the coloring on my head.  I'll go for a bike ride tomorrow for that, but I won't stay out too long.  I think it would burn quickly, and that would surely hurt.

I was lucky to find that the scar on my head is hardly noticeable.  The doctor who stapled me up was very good to me cosmetically.  I thought it would be freaky, but it's not.  I don't have to wear a head covering, which is nice for me.  I'm going to enjoy my new look and make the most of it.

My son shaved his head 2 weeks ago and sent me a text with a picture.  He's in 9th grade and said he wanted to do it first so that I would know that I could do it too.  He told me last night that he'll keep it that way as long as I do.  I'm the luckiest dad alive.

Best wishes for good health, peace, and happiness to everyone here.  Keep smiling, and smell every rose that you pass.  That's my new take on life.  :)

Is this head blade s4 still the best electric out there for shaving your head? I'm looking to find a razor, but I have one potential problem: I don't live in the US. I live in Taiwan. So one main concern for me would be replacement razors and perhaps head shaving products.

Hope it's cool bumping this topic. My question seemed to be in line so I didn't want to start a new one.

the headblade s4 is actually a normal razor, it's not electric. the Panasonic Pro-Curve ES-LA63-S is one of the best, or so i've been told, as far as electric goes, i use the conair cleanhead myself, it does an okay job.

Been doing some searching on the web about the la63 and a few others trying to figure out my best options. The last time I had an electric was 5 years ago. It was a norelco and worked great for my face. I tried to shave my head with it once and it sucked. Have norelcos improved since then or do all rotatable head razors have dismal results when shaving heads. I did find a la93 listed as well. Are all the la series good?

The very best electric razor is Fusion ProGlide Power....no but seriously I've been through a ton of electrics and the Braun 7 has been the best for me...and, yes it IS overpriced, but I need to shave twice a day and didn't mind the extra coinage

I've been using this Panasonic electric shaver with nano blade technology (ES8228 or ES8109S) for the past 2 months and love it. Without exaggeration, it gives me the closest shave ever, and I've been using the top of the line electrics from Norleco and Braun for over 20 years. I have compared the Panasonic shaver with nano blades with the Braun Pulsonic and Norelco Arcitec and found that the Panasonic gives me the closest shave. Dry shaving will also give you a close shave.   :popo

Hi folks, just joined! I have been using a set of shears every couple of weeks and tried the razor thing in the shower but it tore me up. I decided to look up the best electric razor for heads and I found this site.

For the guy with cancer, prayers sent but look into making your body as alkaline as you can, cancer and most diseases can't grow in an alkaline environment. And also look into B17 tablets, there are PH pills on Amazon as well as the B17.

Anyway I decided to try the Panasonic ES-SL41-S Arc 3 which Wally World has for $60. Well I was pleasantly surprised! It does a great job and we'll see how it holds up.

I've used a Norelco triple for years for shaving my face.   I've heard so many great reviews on the Panny's that I'll probably try one soon.   But one thing I don't see mentioned here :  Williams 'Lectric Shave.   For me it's night/day difference on my face and I just about won't bother shaving without it.

Now as to using it on my head - I've been a HB Sport owner for about a year.   I say "owner" as opposed to "user" because I haven't been consistent with it.   In the past year I've shaved it maybe twice.  I like the feel and look but to be honest was too lazy to consistently stay with it.   My typical haircare pattern has been using a pair of electric clippers with no guard installed and I can clean my head in under 5 minutes.   Now I've grown tired of those remaining nubs of hair and decided that the maintenance routine of shaving my head would be no more trouble than clipping my head once it got to be a habit.    So out came the HB, new blades and now my wind resistance is lower once again.   While face shaving yesterday I looked at my Norelco and thought "well why not ?".    So I've started using the 'Lectric Shave and Norelco to see how it works out.

For you guys who've never used an electric razor, it won't be nearly as close as a blade at first while your skin adapts to the change.   That's why most people stop using electric on their face because they don't stay with it.   Typically takes a couple weeks.    So far the 'Lectric Shave + Norelco isn't as smooth as a blade but I've only shaved that way once.   Taking my own advice, I'll stick with it to see how it goes; but the point of this post is to suggest the Williams 'Lectric Shave for those who are trying electric shavers.

Thanks Rstgo007... I was just about to ask if anyone had tried it. I have a dual-foil Panasonic that I use between blade shaves (LOL @ the comment the ProFusion Power was the best electric...  :*)) ) - thanks for letting us know (I just looked on Amazon at it and it looks like a good deal, even if it's a little pricey...I'll also read any reviews). I do like the job the Panasonic does (it's an ES####, can't recall right now) I shaved with it last night and my old Braun single foil, but the Braun's battery is about dead now so I may invest in the Skull Shaver or the Conair Cleanhead depending on the reviews...
