Did most of you guys grow your facial hair after you shaved your heads, are did you already have it? I've had my goatee for a little over a year now. The bald look didn't really "come together" for me until I grew it. I have a weak chin, and once my head was shaved it seemed to be more noticeable, at least in my mind. Growing the goatee disguises it nicely. I'd never worn any facial hair before (other than occasionally not shaving for a few days), but now I really can't imagine being without it.
-
hey razor. i have had the goatee for about 13 yrs. with the exception of one stupid mishap in 96 when i had to shave it it has been there. been shaving my head for almost a year. i can't imagine having hair or a clean shaved face. for me personally, i think the bald head would look silly without facial hair. but that is just me.
-
I started with the bald look and the goatee at the same time. But then I shaved the goatee off for a couple of months. Once I grew it back about 3 1/2 years ago, I haven't shaved it since.

I had the goatee on and off for several years, based on military demand mostly and personal desire. Lately I have been doing the whole beard day and half growth.
Good post RazorX.

; Ahoy! I've worn facial hair [at first a goatee, then a full beard, and, after adopting the bald look, a goatee again] since 1964, when I began graduate school. Wearing it was problematic during the Viet Nam era. Except for cities on both coasts, it was generally regarded as a leftist political statement, especially in the mid-west and South. Professionals, politicians, businessmen, the whole middle class, were all de rigueur clean-shaven. Only orthodox Jews, certain unAmerican ethnics, monks, mad scientists, and sailors on long voyages wore beards. Hold-overs from before the war, such as bandleaders and ageing actors, could get away with moustaches. I grew my goatee because I got tired of raping the supersensitive skin on my chin and jawline, and because I have a weak chin. My father's advice not to wear any facial hair proved right: my future inlaws--from Michigan--regarded the marriage of their daughter to a bearded man with suspicion and loathing. This was richly ironic because I come from a politically conservation Catholic family; we have voted Republican in every election, except that of JFK. When I decided to go baldy, I just spontaneously chopped the beard down to a goatee. One of the frequent comments I get now is that the new style makes me look younger--good news at 64. Like many of you, I have found that the goatee works better with the chrome dome than the beard, although the skin-problem has returned and I may go back to the beard. Thankfully, facial hair is no longer associated with subversive antiAmerican sentiment, viz. Gov. Corzine, innumerable academics, policemen, even servicemen. Certain heads look better shaved than others; and certain chins look better covered with hair than others. It's a matter of putting nature and aesthetics together; and requires a degree of honest objectivity. Professor Melon

I've had my goatee off and on for about 10 years now. I personally feel that I have too much of a baby face to be clean shaven...with or without hair. Wife found some old pics yesterday when I was still keeping a full head of hair and had just trimmed my goatee. She made the comment that she liked more hair on my head and less on my face. Told her to get used to the way it is now. It's not likely to change anytime soon.
-
I have not yet shaved - but the day is approaching fast since Mother Nature is rapidly relieving me of my hair. No facial hair ... yet. Many of you guys get jokes about having to grow it on your face since you cannot grow it elsewhere!
-
Yeah but that's ok, because they're just jealous!!!

OK, so here's what you need to do: start growing a goatee now, and make a commitment to shave your head when it's grown in. That gives you a week or two to prepare to be bald.
-
I have had facial hair off and on since age 18, when I grew a moustache in high school. I have had at least a moustache. From about 1989 to 1997, I had a full beard continously. In '97 when I started to shave my head, I trimmed the beard down to a goatee. The shaved head has also been a more off and on thing. But more on than off. During that time, I have mostly had a full goatee. But I have also sported a moustache and at other times, a full beard. I finally tried the clean shaven look for a few weeks during May of this year. Now I am back to a goatee and moustache. I personally prefer having some kind of facial hair to go with the bald head.
-
So you've been bald for quite a while, then?
Yeah, I just celebrated 4 years of being bald.
-
I grew a goatee as soon as I got out of the Navy (5 years ago). I kept it when I first started shaving my head (2 1/2 years ago), but decided to go with the soul patch about 6 months ago...
-

Grow the tee about the same time you shaved?
-
Grow the tee about the same time you shaved?
Yeah, I grew a full beard while hunting (right after shaving my head). When I got back to civilization, my dad and his buddy wanted to go to the bars, so I shaved the beard down to a goatee to look a little older. When I got home I got such good reviews that I decided to keep it (except for a couple of months that I shaved it off for some reason).
-
When I first started shaving I had this wierd "landing strip" from my lip to my chin. It was a hipster thing but when I got a new job they said "grow it or shave it." Since then its been the full go-t.
I actually shaved it for nasal surgery last years ago and it did not look good. I looked my Neo from the Matrix when he is rescued from the slime.
Facial hair is the way to go!
Oh look a picture of me!

I have been playin with different facial hair looks; did the tee for awile with no complaints.
It seems like most of you guys have settled on the tee in some form or another, but has anyone had significant luck with a full beard or some well cropped, fancy variation?
I'm currently doin the beard, but it hasn't grabbed me by the stones yet and whisked me away to the land of chicks and honey. :-\
-
I used to have a chin curtain (or at least I think that's what they call it) and a goatee with moustache (see my picture).
I shaved off the chin curtain and kept the rest.

I think I'm going to try a set of the Mutton Chops. We'll see how the wife likes that one... :o
-
:D Ahoy, Sheeple: I had a goatee in graduate school but proceeded to a full beard, which I wore until very recently, in the 1980s. I wore it because my chin and jawline are sensitive and I got sick of nicks and razor burn. There was nothing like the Mach III Turbo or therapeutic shaving gel back then. On adopting the totallly bald look, in November, I chopped the beard down to the goatee you see in my pic. I may go back, as my facial skin still hates razoring. Girly guys, to use the Governator's term, seldom adopt either facial hair or baldness. Bare heads and bearded chins seem to be a natural adult male combination. Experiment; see what works best for you. And let's see the results. Professor Melon

I'm growing out a full beard to go with my bald head right now. It's about 4 weeks in. If you want to try, the christmas season is the best time because of the break and cold.

No problem, right now the moustache and goatee are there, with sideburns but needs to get thicker and connected. The day I had my head shaved the 1st time "professionally" I knew I was going to grow facial hair with it because I have a baby face. And at that time I found a beard board where guys discussed beards and growing them and I thought, if I have a baby face what better way to fix it 8).
Plus, it won't be mountain man style(some of those guys go extreme) it will be professional looking to go with my shaved head/glasses combo for hopefully a soon to be teaching position at jh/hs level.
The most interesting I have learned about my facial hair is it is a yellowish blonde for the most part, compared to when I had hair, it was a lot darker.
You can see the goatee/sideburns/moustache in this pic if you look close:

david don't sweat the difference in hair color. when i had hair and sideburns, the color went from light brown on top to reddish at about the top of the ears. i had a 2-tone paint job. whew...... glad those days are over. now the go-t is the reddish color, but not 2-tone.

It was just interesting when I saw the moustache color the first time, doesn't bother me, especially not with a permanent bald look 8)
-
Ah, the moustache colour...I could go on and on about it.
It's not really evident from my picture (being b/w), but my hair colour is dark brown, and
my moustache and goatee are red!
Some people have suggested I was gay or something (they thought I coloured it).
But the truth is, it's my natural colour, as far as my facial hair is concerned, anyway.
Anyway, David: when having a beard, be careful to groom it properly, otherwise you might
get a slightly "dirty" look - it happens sometimes with some bearded people.
Keep it trimmed, keep it well groomed, and you'll do great...
-
I'm right there with ya Harry. My natural hair color is dirty blonde/brown. However, my goatee has always been red, very red. People always asked if I colored it. Never have, never will. Even though the wife has spotted some gray, I still won't budge on that front.

Of course, like I said, those guys on beard board are hardcore, ie zz top style almost. Me, I want a good looking one that I can take with me to a job interview, not something that looks like I should be a lumberjack.
As far as trimming it, the electric cool skin shaver I have has a trimmer for facial hair, so hopefully that will work. If i'm not comfortable with doing it myself, I know of a really upscale salon that my dad took me to as a kid/teen and they offer beard trimming separately.
-
I went through the mood tee thing also. My natural hair color is brown, the tone varied depending on my time out in the sun. As I grew my tee out it had shades of blonde and then eventually that viking reddish hue.
As a testament to the progress of my new beard look, the UPS guy hit on me about 30 min ago. Not the kind of attention I was interested in, but I'll never turn down a compliment. :-D
I am keeping it fairly close cropped in order to avoid the dirty mountain man look, if in the end the beard fails, I am movin to chops. Bust out a leather flat cap and embrace the irish appeal.
I'll see if I can dig up some earlier photos for the before and afters.

Here is the 7 week update on the facial hair.

The 1st/2nd ones show both sides better, but I like all three pics myself.
-
Looking much older and mature David
-
My chin and neck are really the only areas hair grows thick enough to even try to grow anything. I used to have a goatee, but I shaved it down a while back. I might have to bring it back though, or a soul patch. I work in health care so I have to keep it professional.
-
Yeah, i'm just letting it grow right now, once it comes time for job interviews in the late spring , i'll trim it to make it neat.
This picture shows it probably best.

Personally, I think you look better with the glasses

Two of my close friends are baldies and have goatees ... I just can't bring myself to grow one, I prefer to be the odd one out.

Hi David,
Thanks for showing the pics.
The facial hair look on your face looks wonderful.
Like to see pics afther 14 weeks think it looks awesome with your bald head.

I would agree with that. But I am conditioning myself if I get lasik in the future.
-

I think the shaved head and goatee combo has become mainstream enough that people no longer think of it that way. I also think the way you dress makes a big difference. If you're wearing a suit, nobody is going to be thinking along the lines of American History X.
I will admit, though, when I'm dressed in a T shirt and jeans - and especially if I'm wearing my leather jacket - I do sometimes think that I look a bit like a thug. It's ironic because in reality I'm one of the least threatening people you'd ever come across.
-
Unfortunately (although sometimes it’s great) my job doesn’t require a suite that often. It also has been several years since the movie.

Forgive me for being a knucklehead here....but what is "American History X"?
Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) returns from prison to find his younger brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), caught in the same web of racism and hatred that landed him in prison. After Derek's father is killed in the line of duty by a minority, Derek's view of mankind is altered, but while in prison, he discovers that there is good and bad in every race. The task before him now is to convince Danny of his newfound enlightenment.

One of my fave films of all time. Norton was outstanding in it. He also looks very cool in it (ignoring the fact that his characters was a c**t).

hey guys just started to grow a beard i heard i should not trim for awhile what you think and how long should wait
-
I'm not sure about the not trimming thing. When I grow facial hair I trim it right away, once it is long enough for trimmers.
-
Dude, my facial hair grows so fast and so thick that I think I might be the missing link sometimes. When i grow the full beard don't shave or trim until it's long enough to properly shape the neck and cheek lines. It's really easy to mess up the shape of a beard if the hair isn't long enough. That usually means about three days for me....at that point I shape up the neck and cheeks. After a week or so its usually long enough that I start trimming it to keep it neat looking. I'd say it really depends on how long you want the beard to be. If you want it short and neat you're going to have to trim more than if you're going for the grizzly adams look. Hope this helps...

I have had at least a goatee for over 14 years (with the exception of a few brief lapses in judgment wherein I shaved clean). Most of the time I opt for just the goatee, no moustache, but I do grow the lip[ warmer sometimes. Currently I have grown a full beard and I am liking it for the moment.
I am fairly schizophrenic with “my lookâ€. When I choose to grow the hair on my head it is naturally curly red/blonde (Irish family) but I have had it black, green, Crayola red, blue, bleached white streaks, brown and of course, shaved.
My facial hair has followed the trend and gotten dyed to match the hair colors, and has been everything from shaved clean to a super narrow diablo, to a 7†long goatee, to a full beard.
I have discovered that with my head shaved and no facial hair I have kind of a chemo-kid look about me. I guess I just prefer my face with some hair on it.
So the short answer would be: “I have had facial hair for much longer than I have shaved my head.â€

Like most chubby men I have a goatee to hide the double chin... however i think the face needs some hair few people can pull of a completely hairless head and face.
I had the goatee the day i went slick

Good point!

I started growing a goatee in July of 2006, I prefer having the shaved head and goatee and mustache, I have been shaving my head since April of 2004 i got tired of being having the hairless head and face so it was either grow a goatee or grow in my hair and iam BBC for life

Any of you ever tried that stuff that gets rid of the grey in the beard/goatee? I think it's by Just For Men.

The gray makes you look wise Robmeister, what's wrong with that?

That's quite a compliment, Mr. Pen....
I'm speechless.........I am without speech

I wish mine would turn white! A few years ago, when it was pretty long, I tried to dye it, but couldn't get it white, just a light blond color.

You should get red contacts to go with it if you can get your beard to be white.

yes sir. not for grey in my case, but to darken the color. Easy to use and works well.
