Bald by choice or by genetics?
« on: November 07, 2010, 08:32:00 AM »
Geneticists say you get your hair gene from your mothers father. My mothers father had a full head of hair and I'm bald, but my father is also bald. Does my father have some super gene that makes me bald or am I an exception to this rule?

As far as I know there are more genes involved. The most important one lies on the X chromosome so you inherit it from your mother, others you can get from your father.

Thanks Noggin,

I believe you are correct in that more than one gene is involved. Thanks for taking the survey.

the Present worse than it is & the future less resolved than it will be.

Yeah the mother's father thing isn't actually true. If there's an MPB gene on an X chromosome, you could inherit it from either of your mother's parents. You just probably wouldn't see it in your grandmother because it's MALE pattern baldness (i.e., not usually expressed in women except in extreme cases). But there are other, not sex linked baldness genes.

Both grandfathers were bald (MPB).  My dad has a full head of hair.  My older brother is bald (MPB).  My younger brother and I have full heads of hair.  I am bald by choice.

Mom's father was bald. Her brother is bald and his son started losing his hair by his senior year in high school. My dad'd father died with a full head of hair. My dad has all of his. And when I'm not shaving my head, I have a pretty full head of hair with only a thinning at the back.
