Title: What didn't you expect when you went sly?
Post by: Raulski on July 06, 2013, 05:41:33 AM
Wondering what you found the most surprising aspect of being bald; whether it be people's reactions or the 'Velcro' feeling of trying to pull a sweater over your head etc.
Personally, I was really surprised at how hard my pillow felt and how much protection my hair had provided (I was a gardener when I first went sly, & bumping a smooth head on a clothesline was radically more painful than with even short hair).

I think what surprised me the most was how much I liked it!  Going bald by choice ... I did not know that I would enjoy the smooth head so much and how much good feedback I would receive.

I really enjoy the feel of sun and rain on my bald head.

I was not expecting that.

What i did not expect was to live life like I was in the military again with all the "Yes, Sir." I hear "Yes, Sir" a lot more than I hear "No, Sir."

the sticky feeling of my scalp the first time I tried pulling my hood over my head. I knew it felt rubbery by touch of hand, but the difficulty I had putting my hood on still surprised me. I still have trouble with it -_-

I shaved it off in January, and was not prepared for how cold my head got.

I bought a LOT of solid color ski caps.

How cold it got.  I used to be able to work pallets in my stores freezer set at -30F with nothing more than pants, polo shirt and gloves, now once it hits 40 I'm shivering and teeth chattering.

I didn't realize how sweaty my head got! The hair use to absorb it. Now I need to wipe the sweat.

Sometimes my head actually sounds like Velcro when I pull a t-shirt off. It amuses my wife to no end.
I'm with you on the cold comments as well. I'd never felt cold in a specific body part, except my hands, until I went shiny-bald. I'm a bit of a hat-guy in winter now.

The attention thing, of course. However, what I forgot is that post balding oneself, you now have a two coloured scalp. I peeled to get ratings for our news cast and forgot to add some make up that would "read" on camera as only part of my head "showed" giving the impression I'd had a partial craniotomy.... Even if you've quite short hair, and I did not, there will be a shift in the colour spectrum after the razor has finished.

THIS

I tend to get hot very easy anyway. In work situations, especially in a suit I sweat and my head is wet. I was doing a presentation the other day and it must of looked like I was nervous but I was just baking hot and sweating

Didn't expect

- to stay sly - thought I'd give up after a week or two. That was nearly 18 months ago
- to noticing other sly bald guys - see how good their shaved heads are
- quickly disliking the sandpaper feel on my head, if I skip a days shave
- and on the very rare occasions, missed two days shaving, the dislike of seeing and feeling irritable stubble on my head.

It's as if my default setting is now "sly".

Also didn't expect the amazing feel of a freshly shaved noggin hitting a cool pillow when you first go to bed

To have to be more careful about bumping my head.

Seems like the hairs worked like cat's whiskers and gave me information about clearance.

I started bumping my head anytime I did anything where there was low clearance - like getting stuff out from under the stairs, ducking below boards, even getting into unfamiliar smaller cars.

How weird it feels to have a smooth head!!

Also, how patchy it can look due to not having a full head of hair in the first place. Looks patchy from the rear!

And the velcro feel!! lol

I was originally planning to post this in a separate thread, but for me it was the lookalike comments. I feel that either some people group bald men into one category or don't realize there are different people. So far, I have been confused with three other people in church. Although it may seem to take on a serious tone in writing, I find it utterly hilarious when I was confused with someone else.

I think the funniest one happened a few weeks ago. One of my closest friends stopped by church for something, and someone greeted him thinking my friend was me to only do a double take when he noticed I was a few feet away. To justify the story a bit, the lights were dim. But my friend and I have been asked if we were related lots of times.

Another thing that surprised me was the addictiveness to a completely smooth dome. When I have hair, I normally don't shave my face more than 2-3 times a week and it never bothers me. But when I'm sly, I need to shave my head every single day - sometimes twice if I'm going out at night and want to rock a shiny dome. I'm sure that anyone looking at me wouldn't notice if I skipped a day, but to me there's a huge difference between a completely smooth freshly shaved head and the sandpaper feeling that starts just hours later. Maybe it's because when I'm sly it's BBC and I'm shaving a full head of pretty thick hair.

Good question!

I didn't expect that i would be quite so OCD about shaving my head
I didn't expect to feel the air conditioning on my head when moving from the heat
I didn't expect the change in attitude i get from both strangers and friends and i seem to get a new found respect
I didn't expect  the great feeling of rubbing moisturiser into my head after shaving it
I didn't expect to find myself hating the look of stubble if a leave it a few days
I didn't expect people to ask if they could feel it!
I didn't expect jokes like 'who luvs ya baby'..or 'wow here comes Gru'..OK maybe i did expect that!  ;)
I didn't expect the velcro feel when pulling on a t shirt or hat
I didn't expect complete strangers to say 'I like your shaved head'
I didn't expect that some close friends would actually not say anything at all.

I knew before I did it it was no looking back and it would be forever.  I just LOVE being bald.  I did NOT expect my scalp would be so oily, what can I do to reduce an oily scalp? I shave every other day and have ALWAYS had some acne since shaving on the back and sides of my head. I love shave days and really don't like the "off day" with the sandpaper feel.  I might try shaving daily for a week. I am Norwegian from both side of my family and was blond.  My skin is sensitive and that's why I always assumed I would get bad razor burn shaving daily.

The other thing I didn't expect was how cool it feels swimming.

Lastly ( I didn't mean to type so much) I use to wear hats almost ALL THE TIME. Since shaving I prefer to ditch the hats most of the time.  I also ride a Harley (trike) and found out almost from day one I have to wear either a skull cap or dew rag under my helmet or its uncomfortable.

Thanks for sticking around through my "brief" reply.

Hi Daven

Read around the forum. You will find many people will recommend witch hazel for after shave care.

Give it a go. It's  supposed to help with acne as well as cuts and abrasions.

I tried it for the first time today and my head felt a lot more dry than before so it might help reduce the oily scalp.

Mine only cost a couple of pounds in a pharmacy for a 200ml bottle.

I'm going to keep it in the fridge for added zing.

What surprised me was similar to what you guys described: a Velcro feel, reactions of acquaintances and strangers to the hairstyle change, addiction to head shaving. I didn't expect how nice it is to swim bald-headed in a pool in summer. And I didn't expect that  questions about my shaved head would be a frequent conversation starter.  Also, I didn't expect some friends and acquaintances wouldn't recognize me:-)

Having done it before, I was sort of geared what to expect, but one thing since I returned to the Order of the Sly  ;D was:

I didn't expect to think about shaving so much - thinking and asking about different products, razors, techniques, etc. and didn't (but should have) expect to find resources where everyday guys and gals share their support and knowledge with others! You guys all rock!!  :)

Same here.  When I was sporting a full head o'hair, shaving was an option.  I even would go a couple of months between haircuts.  Now like baldsufer, it's gotta stay clean on top.  I have a bottle of Shave Secret and razors in my office gym locker in the event I have to go out after work and need to touch up the dome.  I too see a huge difference between sandpaper head and the freshly shaved noggin.  You can call me fussy, but hey gotta keep t nice n' shiny.  Besides, if someone wants to rub it, I want them to have an enjoyable experience!  :)

I wasn't expecting the stubble to annoy me after 12 hours (my hair grows VERY fast). Also, I shaved before and I never got the shine. I get it now and i LOVE it. also i can tell where the wind is coming from. Even when I had a buzzed no guard hair cut, when I was at work driving the shuttle, I couldn't tell it was on hardly. NOW i quickly learned there is a vent right above my head.  I WAS expecting people to assume I had cancer. and so far, I have one person (coworker) make a joke about it. Thats it. Along with everything else that was stated above.

I love the way it feels.  I was surprised how much I enjoy the feel of shaving.  I'm always surprised how jolting the cold feels on my head as winter approaches.  And I really don't like the rain on my head.  I wear a lot of hats outside in bad weather - but I like hats, so all's good!

I've always hated shaving. Thankfully I can go 3 or 4 days without shaving my face and only have a fairly heavy stubble.

What surprised me about shaving my head is how obsessive I've become about it. It's been a little over a month and yesterday was the first day off I've taken, and it's killing me.

So enough of this, I'm off to get "clean".

Well i had a few things i didnt expect. Theres the things alot of the previous posters on this thread mentioned, the velcro feel  of shirts and hats sliding on my scalp, the obsession with shaving, etc. Biggest surprise though was my mom's reaction. I had expected her to ridicule me for it, saying it was a dumb chioce for me, i dont have the right shape head to pull it off, i ruined my looks. , so on. But she didnt say any of those things. She did make a light hearted joke, but otherwise her reaction was rather neutral. Of course at that time i hadnt decided to remain bald by choice yet, it was just an experiment to see how i would like it. But once i decided to stay shaved and told her, she only responded by saying that she had decided not to fight her whiteish hair by dying it anymore. Out of all the surprises i had from shaving my head, and deciding to stay razor shaved despite my full head of hair, that was most shocking

From the perspective of three years smooth, what I did not expect was that this would become such a part of just who I am. That first year, I could not get over the cool feeling and tingling my scalp felt. I also was incredibly aware of the fact I no longer had the horseshoe going around my scalp. I caught myself looking at my reflection in almost every mirror I passed.

It now is so ordinary and mundane to me that I rarely think about myself as being bald. I simply am me.
Title: Re: What didn't you expect when you went sly?

Another thing i didnt expect was how much i would enjoy the process of shaving. I also shave down below, and while i considef that process a bit of a chore, made worth it only by how nice it feels doing certain things inappropriate for this forum,  i actually enjoy and look forward to shaving mybhead each morning, and sometimes also at night just before bed.

Which brings upma thought/question. Has anyone else noticed that their pillow feels alot different under a freshly shaven head than it does even when your last shave was relatively recent?

What I didn't expect was how much of a non-issue it would be.

It took my wife about 20 minutes to get used to it.  My mom's only reaction was, "That's cute."  (cute???)  My dad, a military man during the '50's, didn't say anything.

Around the office, I used to get a lot of "bald jokes" and comments about my thinning hair, but after I went sly, all that stopped.  A few of my clients commented that it suited me, but most said nothing.

It was a relief, but it made me regret that I waited so long to take off that last quarter inch of hair.

I didn't expect to like the bald look, which nearly two months later I have completely embraced.  Also, I didn't expect the overwhelming support I've received from others about ditching the 'system' and going sly.  Reflecting back now I'm still surprised at how ridiculously important I thought it was to have hair.  It's not important to me at all now.  I like that.

I'm still amazed how much cooler it is in the summer with a bald head. I can't seem to wear a hat more than about 15 minuets without sweating. I see guys with long hair and I don't know how they can stand it.

I walk almost every morning, and love when it is very cool outside, feels great on a freshly shaved head.

I live in Las Vegas, so I can relate to the feeling cooler in the heat! I love the hot weather and the last week it was at least 105 degrees every day. I keep a beanie in my tool pouch on my belt in case I have to spend long periods of time out in the sun at work but I don't notice the heat on my head like I did after the first time I shaved...It felt like I could actually feel my scalp tanning! Same here, Mr Jules. Over three years ago, I shaved my head for what was supposed to be one time to see what it was like. Now when I get up every morning I can't wait to lather up my head and get rid of every bit of stubble. Never dreamed I would love the look and feel of sporting a shaved bald head!

It took nearly 3 years, but I can look in a mirror and recognize the bald guy.

I didn't expect that really "sensitive" feeling you get directly after a clean shave.  The first time I shaved and I felt my scalp, wow... I thought something was wrong with me.  My scalp just felt really sensitive and sorta overly exposed, like a baby's bottom.  ;D

I also didn't expect to attract more women after going bald, but I really do.  It's real!

For any guy to say women are not into bald guys, that may be slightly true.  Everyone has their preference, however; it's just a different hairstyle.  That's all it is.  If you are happy and comfortable with it around other people and you exude confidence with a "I don't give a fu-k" type attitude, you will attract wayyyyy more women than you ever thought possible.

Having transitioned from a full head of hair to sly, it is very true that that the scalp is more prone to injury without the protection of a layer of hair.

I didn't expect that I would like being bald, but approximately 6 years later I'm still bald and have no intentions of ever growing it back

Same here Larry, I intended to shave my head one time, just to see what it was like. Here I am almost 5 years later, shaving it everyday. Easy to get hooked on that awesome feel of a smooth bald head.

Also, I didn't expect some friends and acquaintances wouldn't recognize me:-)
Converstation starter. f**k yes, I get that all the time.

Honestly, I didn't know what to expect I expected to just to feel awkward and to be self-conscious around people whom you mean and they were all very embracing up my look and all actually encouraged me to continue it I did talk about it a lot though but I think that for me that it was cathartic to talk about it I don't really talk about anymore it's been almost 4 months and I can't find to the point of actually embracing my genetics to the point that my understanding is God Don't Make Junk so was it even matter.

Going SLY was easy. I asked a guy I have know in passing about his shaved haed tonight at out at the pub listening to music...Gave me his routine. Ask him if he remember me with ahir he said no....just bald about 8 weeks. Told him he rocked a shaved head.

Most sly guys will gladly discuss shaving with other baldies. It's the brotherhood, man! Another advantage of living sly.

I like seeing this GREAT post reappear on my timeline because I think what I can add thinking back in my memory banks.

One thing I didn't expect was: the types of gals I dated and were attracted to me seemed to change.

BUT it seemed like glam, hi-maintenance types had lesser interested in me, and the more active athletic types of gals (louder) gravitated to me.

I know that's hard to prove and some may be a function of maturity, but in any case, it's a good trade off in my book.

At first I knew my regular customers, neighbours, and coworkers would be shocked. However, its going on 4 months and people still stare at me and make somewhat rude comments.  At least once a day a customer goes "What the heck possessed you to shave your head?" or "You look like you'd have a full head of hair, you're silly to shave it." Plus all day long I have to hear people say how shiny it is. Yes I know its shiny --- move on!

When I first shaved my head, a customer went "You looked hideous with blue hair and look hideous bald."

You hear about women being body-shamed all the time and while you can't compare my experience to what women go through, it still feels like an attack on my appearance.

Rude people are going to be rude.  While I may ask a friend or acquaintance about a new hairstyle, beard style, tattoo, or piercing, I would never throw out my opinion if it was negative.  I would either keep my mouth shut or give a compliment.  But, I would take the shiny comments as compliments, even if they were not meant to be compliments.

I used to hate hot weather I was always hot and sweated profusely but now I don't run my air conditioning as cool a when I'm out the heat I actually enjoy the heat now it feels great if I had known that I would have shake my head the re years ago .  I've got a great tan now and I'm enjoying being bald.

I didn't expect to feel comfortable with it instantly and that I didn't feel a need to where a hat the first time out. Other haircuts like getting a flattop for the first time, I wore a hat!

I NEVER wore a hat on my flattop!  SACRILIGE!  Even when it was 20 below zero! What, and risk pushing one hair of that utter perfection out of place, are you kiddong?  (Oh the h umanity.....). Gee, do thinkthat I might have been just a little obsessed about my hair?

I've never been a hat wearer, especially when I rocked a flattop.

So, now, I spend so much time on my daily headshaving routine, why would I cover it up. I prep, lather, shave, exfoliate, and apply lotion. With a perfect tan and a brilliant shine, I want to show off my chrome dome!

For sure if I could have ever managed a flattop like I have seen in the photos of @Semi-Sly or @reddog I would never cover them with a hat.  I have so much envy for guys with good flattops.

I never really liked hats on my head anyway though.
