Title: What made you go bald?
Post by: Tyler on July 28, 2006, 10:19:30 PM
When I started thinning I never thought of shaving my head.  Then one year I went hunting in Montana for a couple of weeks and decided to use some clippers to shave my head.  I did this because the year before my head got so crusty from wearing the beanie and not showering.

My girlfriend at the time (now wife) loved it!  She also loved that I had grown a goatee while up in the mountains.  Since then I've always shaved my head.  First with clippers, then decided to go completely bald.

my hair started thinning really early, probably when i was like 19... which sucked!  and of course it took a while for me to decide what to do.  i immediately ruled out drugs like rogaine / propecia... i have a "thing" about popping pills (i didn't have any painkillers after my wisdom teeth were pulled, for example).  did some research into the hair transplant thing, but even then you gotta use hair-retaining drugs and plus if it goes badly, it can be pretty awful looking.

after getting used to the idea i just trimmed my hair shorter and shorter, since the notion of a combover or some other trick to "look" less bald always seemed so ridiculous to me... and then when i was on vacation in hawaii, on a whim i bought some clippers and buzzed my head down.  kept buzzing it ever since, and then probably in april or so i just said "the hell with it" and busted out the Mach 3.

haven't looked back since!

I'm 25, and a couple of years ago I started loosing hair. Since my grandfather was bald I knew I'd share the same fate (like so many other Greeks), I just wished it wouldn't set in so early. So, over the next two years I watched my hair thinning and thinning, and I tried to comb it in a different way so it wouldn't show. I was starting to get desperate...

About eight months ago I got so pissed with this whole thinning thing and with the worrying and the "covering up", so I said "that's it!".
I took a pair of scissors, took a chair and sat down in front of the mirror in the sink. I grabbed my hair and made the first cut. Aaaaah!
Now there was no going back. I cut it all down as far as I could with the scissors, then I did the rest with a razor.

And when I was done, and as I was looking at the bleeding mass that was my head, I thought "cool...".
And I loved the result! I was very happy with my new looks and I've never looked back since...

I put all my hair in a box and gave it to my favourite aunt as a gift for her birthday. Up to this day she hasn't told anyone what my
birthday gift was. You think she liked it?

PS: here's a picture of me before the bald...bold move.

I had really long hair (to my mid back), since I was a teen. At 25, I noticed hair on the pillow and clogging the shower drain. Ever comb out would result in huge tufts of hair in the comb. For five years I did the ponytail combover, and wore a hat. My hair got thinner and thinner, until there was nothing left on top.

My partner at the time (who daily shaved a full head of hair) decided that I looked like sh*t. I resisted cutting it, but knew I had to. He braided it, cut off the braid, and processed to buzz off the rest. Next came the lather and the razor, and I have been slick bald every since.

My hair started thinning in college due to genetics (thanks Dad!  :D). It was probably one of the most traumatic experiences in my life. . . realizing, and accepting, that I was indeed losing my hair. I tried everything in the book to "hide" the situation. . . close-cropped haircuts; peroxide to make it blonde (actually turned it a weird reddish color - lol); strategically spacing the hair I had left on the top of my head and using hairspray to keep it in place; not going outside on windy days; avoiding anything like a swimming pool, rollercoaster ride, convertible ride; and hitting the gym to gain big muscles to make up for what I was "lacking". . . my hair. I once heard that washing your hair in beer was a good thing. . . bring on the ale (regular or lite?)!! Heard mayonnaise was good. . . bring on the greasy, eggy, nasty stuff!! Vitamins, too?. . . down the hatch, gulp! Rogaine?. . . made my scalp break out in a nasty rash!! Needless to say, countless years of hiding, worry, dollars wasted. . . nothing worked. Combine years of frustration, bored on a Friday night, a few shots of tequila, a clipper and razor. . . I became a new bald man! I first looked in the mirror and thought "eek!" and "cooooool!" The positive responses that I got the next day at work were overwhelming. And a few days later, I was sporting a goatee. I honestly feel I looked the most handsome I have ever looked in my entire life. Hair be gone!

I shaved my hair in support of my son when he was going through chemo. I naturally have a full head of hair. Not too long ago the wife dyed her hair and I commented that I liked the color. She responded with "I'll keep it this way if you grow hair back" Without so much as a hesitation..."Nah, that's alright I like it clean"

I started going bald about my junior year in high school... In my senor pictures even when I was only 17 I had a well receded hair line.

About the time I was 20 it was well receded past the normal balding 20 year olds hair line, which caused people to always think that I was a helluva lot older than I was (this was bad for women my age thinking I was a creepy old guy hitting on them  at bars) So I decided what the hell got out my mach 3 and went to town. (since upgraded to the fusion)

I'll NEVER look back...  been great for about everything..

Someday I may even go the rout of electrolisys(yah I prob spelled it wrong) and get the whole shibang done and toss the razors.

Thanks Tyler, so far so good. He has another check-up next week and they'll look at the tumor to make sure it is dead and there is no new growth. He's a fighter that's for sure.

   HueroPelon,

Best wishes for your son and for your family's coping too. All my best, always...

As for what made me go bald, it was a combination of Male Pattern Baldness, which started in High School, and subsequently excellerated from the anxiety in my career choices! hehe

Thanks Yeti. We really appreciate it. He has a check-up this Wednesday. They'll put him under just a little bit. So they can look in his eye and make sure the tumor is still dead. They'll also check a small lesion near the tumor to make sure it has not developed into a tumor as well.

Thanks to you too Tyler...and all my other bald bretheren.

Hi bald brothers!

I recently join the forum but didn't get a chance to post anything. So I figure I'll start with why am I bald?

I have always like short hair (minus in the 80's of course) so I used to get cuts almost millitary style very often. My ex-wife liked longer hair so "I Had to" keep more on... I started to shave my head bald every summer then let it grow in for winter. Last time I did that was in 2000 and I kept hair on since. This year I decided to go bald again but this time for good. I will be posting more as winter comes along!

::)

Bald By Choice! My hair is very thick and crazy. It grows fast too. I was at work complaining about it one day and, sort of half-joking, I said I was going to shave my head. The girl I was dating at the time looked at me and was like, "No way. You wouldn't do it."  So I went home and had a buddy shave my head while she looked on in horror. It was great! I've been doing it ever since then. 10+ years of being bald!!

I had long hair most of my life, when I decided to go to short hair, I just never liked it and I kept changing styles. I just got fed up and had my girlfriend at the time shave my head, she was a stylist, so off we went to her work. First she gave me a mohawk, I almost had her stop right there because I really liked how it looked. She finished the job and my bald round head was exposed, within a few hours I knew this was how I would be keeping my head for good.

That was New Years Eve 4 years ago.

Hi KrasH, and welcome to our "club".
I must say, you look very good with a shaven head, so you definitely made the right choice there. I also like the picture you're using (has a peaceful feel to it) - it's nice to have members who post portraits with their girlfriends/wives (Tyler has a nice user picture, too).

I also checked out your photography website (looked at the one gallery that's online at the moment) - your photography is very artistic. I like b/w photography...you definitely get a different feel with it, something that cannot be reproduced on colour film...
Do you work with digital or with film?

Well, genetics and God  ;) conspired against me and thinned out my forehead and crown, but otherwise I had thick curly hair.  I came from the land of mullets (yes, North Carolina was the epicenter of that "hair revolution") but with the thinning it looked even more stupid.  My best friend is/was my barber and he kept egging me on to trim it "high and tight".  Once we finally got to the 1 blade it was simply a matter of time before I took a razor to it just on a whim.  That same day I had a mtn bike training session and realized how much easier to put on and take off my helmet and how much cooler it was without hair!
I was hooked and never have looked back.

Now, its smooth shaving everyday!

Alway's kept my hair short, in the 80's I was in the Navy.  I tried to let it grow out when I got out in 92, but couldn't stand it, went back to my flat top.  Moved to the Raleigh area from Charlotte, spent two years trying to find a barber that could cut a decent flat top on me.  Gave up and started buzz cutting my own hair. (too cheap to pay someone for something I can do my self).  One evening I was buzzing my hair, and said to myself, "self, (I do that sometimes, call myself self), self, your only a week or two from being bald"

So I hopped into the shower and started shaving it all off.  Been that way for over 2 years now, I've let it grow back a couple of times, but after a week or two, it comes right back off.

Hammerhead, I've always been interested in mountain biking, and I'm on a quit smoking start exercising kick right now. (we'll see how long that lasts).  Tell me more about this mountain bike training.  Is it something you do on your own, or a class?

I raced mtn bikes all throughout the 90's until I had a major crash in a race in 1999.  Now I just ride a bit but nothing extreme.  I mostly train now on a fixed bike in the house, in a spin class I help teach, or on a Concept2 Rower.

If you are just getting started here is what I would suggest:  Take a beginner spin class at your local Y or gym.  Make sure its a beginner class because some of those "nazi spinner chic instructors" will kill your ass if you are not careful.

Also, just start riding your bike around you neighborhood every day you can. Even if it is just for 20 minutes or so.    If you have local trails talk to other riders to find out what the level of the trail's difficulty really is.  The one thing I see with people new to mtn. biking is that they get in way over their head on a trail that is too difficult at first and either get hurt or discouraged.

One other thing I would suggest is to find someone else just starting out like yourself.  Mtn. biking is one sport that is a lot cooler when you are riding with someone at your own ability at first.  Nothing can be more deflating that going out with some hardcore rider who can't/won't slow down or be patient.  The mountain bike club I use to belong to use to have group rides on Tues and Thurs afternoons/evenings at the local trail.  Tuesday night was always understood to be the night that everyone road as a group and stuck with the beginners or slower riders.  Thursday night was hammer time and everyone basically went at their own pace.  If you can find a group like that that has a scheduled ride where it is clearly understood that it was for fun and enjoyment and to help each other along then you will have a better time...The more fun yo have doing it the more you will want to do it.

Greenways or public bike paths are perfect to start with because they usually don't have steep grades or technical sections.

Start slow, have fun, and don't get discouraged.  Good luck with quitting smoking.  I have watched my best friend, the barber I mentioned, try to kick that habit, and though he is now successful, it was amazingly difficult and trying.

Good luck, Bro!

(DUDE- I just noticed you were from Charlotte.  The group you need to hook up with is called Tarheel Trailblazers.  Go to www.tarheeltrailblazers.com....They are a very active mtn. bike group that does a lot of trail building and trail advocacy in your area.   I used to be a regional volunteer for the International Mtn. Biking Assoc. and was one of the original founders of the Crossroads Cycling Club in Statesville.  I have been out of it since my injury and since I have back racing skateboards on the national circuit).

Thanks!!

I really need to get that site done :)  If you want to see more of my work let me know, I have tons of links I could post :) - this being one of them (not really work safe)  http://www.flickr.com/photos/insomniacstudios/  (http://www.flickr.com/photos/insomniacstudios/) , I do work in the area of Goth/Fetish/Artistic Nudes now, along with our version of portraits and band photography. I started as a film photographer back in the day but shoot 90% digital now, I do a lot of photo manipulations as well so the format works best for me. Besides my Epson R2400 can produce prints that look as good if not better than normal film prints. I still love film though and hope to be able to get a medium format film camera that will accept a digital back, giving me the best of both worlds.

I agree with your thoughts on B&W shots, you can tell a story with a color shot, but when you do it through black and white imagery it just has more character.

My avatar is one of my favorite shots of Amber and myself, we did those two years ago this Christmas, really need to do some more of those again but it is not easy getting me in front of the camera. I think it was Tyler's avatar that inspired me to use that photo in the first place.

Thank you for the welcome!

Great info!  I'm also thinking of getting back into Mtn Bike Riding.  I used to ride 4 to 5 miles everyday when I was a teenager.  It was pretty a pretty flat ride since it was to the gym and back.  One day I got asked by my dad to go for a 7 mile, uphill ridethat he did with his friends.  From riding just 4 miles a day I was able to get up the hill in an hour faster than him and his friends usually did...and they were in good shape.  I was basically training without knowing I was training  ;)

How did I find myself bald?  The first time I was close to being bald was in the military.  I only weighed about 140, and honestly thought that the haircut made me look like a prison camp survivor.  After that I let it grow.  The unit I was in didn't require standard haicuts, so I had a mop until I left the Regular Army for  the National Guard.  They had a real hard on for short haircuts in the new unit, so I kept it much shorter.  I hated the cut and the time required to keep it up.  Once I left the Military for good, I let it grow even longer.

The problem is longer hair requires a lot of time to keep up and dry.  I got to the point that I hated it.  So I then went to a flat top.  I loved not only the look, but the quick care after a shower.  Unfortunately it also required frequent haircuts to keep it up.  I was spending at least $60 a month and 5-6 hours getting these cuts.  I started to miss cuts, and as a flat top grows out your hair looks awful for about 2 months.  So I started going with just a regular "business" cut.  This required less time in the barber chair, but I always left hating the cut.

So I searched the internet for an alternative.  I found the Robo cut.  I started cutting my own hair at my own convenience.  It was working pretty well for about 2-3 years.  Then the blades got dull, and I was getting inconsistant cuts.  I got tired of cleaning up the mess from the cuts, and started looking for another option.

I had entertained the idea of shaving my head last year, but after searching the net couldn't really find the info that would convince me that I really would be happy with the process.  I also had the memory of the Basic Training haircut that I thought looked terrible.  I jokingly said to my wife that I was going to shave my head the week after my 40th birthday.  I had already searched the net and found the Headblade website.  So on the way home from work one evening, I stopped off at Walgreens and picked up the Headblade and Headshave and went to work.  I love it, my wife really loves it, and my daughters love it.  I can't see any reason to go back to a full head of hair ever again.

Hey, It was sort of a spur of the moment decision prompted by a few annoyances.  I had long hair and i always hated having the upkeep.  It took me forever to dry in the morning, and it was just a general annoyance.  When i was at Supercuts, or wherever it was, the lady asked me if i wanted to donate it, and I said yes, which made me feel good.  It's an awesome change and I never want to go back!

Three things made me go bald...
1. Mother nature took care of the bit on top
2. A desire to look better made me trim it
3. The price of haircuts (and the hassle) here made me buy a razor and start to shave it.

A little curiousity....and a lot of encouragement and information from this site.

I actually have pretty full coverage at age 44.

But as I've buzzed it closer and closer it's just so much easier and eliminates bad hair days.

Look forward to being a "blagadan" before too long.

I started shaving cause I was bored with my old hair style, I buzzed it with clippers something I've done a million and one times, and still didn't feel new.... so I took (and by I, I mean my girlfriend) a dissposable to it..... I loved it, so slick, so nice.... we slicked it twice a week and it was a little painful because it was a little on the long side. than I took the disposable to the bathroom with me one night (I lived in a college dorm) and  slicked it myself too me like 30 minutes (head alone). In the following weeks i got my time down to about 20 minutes face and head. Than my girlfriend bought me the headblade classic and i started using that.

At the sink can do it in about 20 minutes... in the shower i can get my head done in like 10 (face included) i prefer to shave in the shower.

that's my storey and i'm sticking to it

Wise move with that hair dude.

That's quite an unusual compliment. Thanks. :)

Hey, you look like Ricky from Trailer Park Boys in that picture...he lives in Nova Scotia too (the character, that is). What a coincidence... ;D

Hey, just kidding. :)

Great to have you with us.

All I mean is you look a lot better slick than with the hair...

As for looking like ricky... frist time i've ever heard that... I currently live in the same town that bubbles is from, I've seen him at my bar (out of character). My bar also had Mr Leahy and Randy do a promo there.

For a doctor, I could see why you might want to look older.  Can't say the new look makes you look a whole lot older...but definitely more distinctive.

I once went for a consultation for a medical procedure (minor surgery) and this young wipper-snapper comes in and my first thought was "This has got to be an intern or male nurse to take my vitals."  But then he says, "Hi, Rob....I'm doctor so and so."

I'm like, "how long has this guy been doing this?"  He was very professional, articulate, friendly and all that...but it felt weird having someone so young ask me to turn my head and cough.

Anyway, your look suits you very well.

What made me go bald???
Well, genetic disposition got it started, a (joking) comment during a Halloween party re-kindled my curiousity to see how I'd look, finding this website strengthened my conviction, and the HeadBlade products helped me finish the job.

Transformation complete, and I love it!

I'll just post my anecdote from my blog to tell the story.....

"My Naked Pate: the Shiny Happy Head Story"
Written by David M. Muench

As a teenager I was oblivious of any "follically-challenged" issues concerning myself. I had hair, damnit. Not only that, I was working out regularly; looking good and feeling good. It wasn't until I was about twenty-years-old when I realized that my forehead began to grow larger. In retrospect I don't recall being overtly ballistic and calling Sy Sperling every day of the week. You know, he's not only the president.
I wasn't really enjoying the scenario, but I accepted it, mainly because my father was bald.

It was a very gradual metamorphosis from having to worry about "bad hair" days to my "Look everybody! It's George Costanza!" days. Sure, I even had my "Gallagher" days when I grew my hair out longer in back as a Last Hoorah, and wondered why I never possessed a Sledge-O-Matic.

Every single man or woman has been gibed by friends with an exorbitant amount of bald jokes. I particularly enjoy when they pretend to fix their "hair" in the reflection of my expansive forehead. Gee, that never gets old. We've pretty much heard them all. Heck, we've even cut ourselves down. We have also retorted with "Yeah, it's a solar panel for a sex machine baby!" Or one of my favorites: "My hair fell off after hitting the headboard too much."

Truth be known, it can be downright painful. All of a sudden we're Lepers. Or at least we feel that we are. Such as the symbolic "Cutting of Samson's Hair" we feel our masculinity or femininity has been torn from our very souls. Yeah, I wouldn't mind having hair like Fabio; and what really irks me is when people that actually do have hair like Fabio shave their heads. It's like they're saying "Ha-ha. Now watch it grow back full and thick! Oooo, look here, chrome dome, a real hairline!"

Yeah, thanks buddy. Here's your handbasket and One Way Ticket. Now get lost.

I've considered using Rogaine or getting a hair transplant, but I didn't. What I did was venture forth to the Realm of the Extreme. No, I'm still a guy. Not that extreme. Last year after an inebriating night of clubbing (no baby seals were hurt) my buddy and I decided that I should shave my head. Naturally anything sounds reasonable to somebody that only an hour ago that night placed a beer label on his forehead saying; "It's the patch, I'm trying to quit."

Wow! After the task was completed, it was a very surreal feeling. I kept rubbing my head, and thinking to myself "Did I really do this?" That next morning I woke up and placed my hand on the top of my head and thought "Oh, man. I really did this!" It took awhile for my family to accept it with open minds, but now they know it's just who I am. My friends were very quick to accept it, telling me that I had the perfect head to be bald, and that I should have done this a long time ago. They also said it looked very sexy (my "female" friends said that thank you); even better than what my head used to look like. That is exactly what I needed. Another amazing thing happened: The bald jokes almost ceased completely. Almost.

I created the name "Shiny Happy Head" with the help of the REM song "Shiny Happy People", which I thought was very apt nom de plume for me. I also have the website "shinyhappyhead.com" The website focuses not on my shiny, happy head, but in making others smile and laugh; as I no longer dwell on being bald. I now like a clean-shaven head, and it's a plus when women at clubs walk by and rub my shiny, happy head. What can I say, apparently it's a good luck thing.

To the guys that are married and lament about losing your hair; get over it! You have somebody! Do you realize how fortunate you are to have someone to share the rest of your life with that accepts you for who you are? Stop focusing on what you don't have, and start appreciating what you do have.

Bald is Beautiful, baby!

Anyone else go bald originally because they lost a Bet?  You got to have faith in your team if you are willing to put your full head of hair on the line, either that or just plain out a combination of stupid and Nuts :px!  I placed the bet that the SeaHawks would make it back to the SuperBowl.  It was either shave my dome, or my friends were going to do it for me... But let me say it just made me more of a SeaHawks fan, for one I proved that I will put anything up to prove faith in my team, and for two: I LOOK DAMN GOOD WITH A SHAVED HEAD!!!  I am almost happier that the SeaHawks didn't make it (I guess you got to find solace in something, and you can't be drinking beer 24/7).  A true WIN/WIN situation.

I have never Had long hair.  I could not stand it.  I once managed to grow it to shoulder length almost.  That was my freshman year in High School the rest of High School was a flat top.  After High School was a comb able high and tight partially provided bye the Army.

About 7years ago I got tired of going to the barber.  Stopped at Bi-Mart Picked up a Razor went home started cutting my hair with a #3.  My three year old wanted to try it.  So for the next three years my daughter was my barber(wife was not very happy :Xo! about the short hair.)  then 4 years ago a friend of mine Developed Uterine cancer.  She was very proud over her thick Black Samoan hair.  This was the Catalyst to the rest of my hair Vanishing.  My wife was not very happy  :x!.  But then she was out of town.  Still don't know what she thinks.  All she says its your head.  And yes were still married :@`.

Well today I have been shaving my head everyday.  My friend now has shoulder length hair and no more cancer.

However I have had this question in the back of my head for a long time.  Even though my head is slick how do I get beyond the little dark stubble?  How much is electrolysis?

There is one and only one option No hair.

And as far as the Cards... I was raised in Washington... When I got here, the Cards sucked, as they still do today.  I do not believe they deserve that brand new Statium, the UFO... My loyalty belongs to a team that had it at first, and will have it till the last, where the ladies are beautiful, and the Running Backs are Fast! Shout Out to Alexander; By the way, speaking of possible spokesmen...

Nothing against the Cards.  Its just, they never got my attention, they are not really all that good, and the fact is they could be better to their fans and the University that allowed them to use their facility for so long.  Yes I am a SunDevil  >:D, and lets just say the organization was less than cordial when departing to their own facility.

What made me go bald, as I wrote in another thread, was shaving my hair short one night and not being able to tell if my high hairline was receding further.  A week later, I shaved it off.  By then, it wasn't even about hairline worries; I just fell in love with the style.

News flash Ricecub, what you save in haircuts/shampoo you might end up spending in product to maintain your scalp.  I find about 50-75 every two or so months on refills of product [razors, HeadShed/HeadLube/HeadSlick]

Hey Mr. Clean .... don't go bursting Ricecub's euphoria .... he might decide to grow his hair back!

By no means do I mean to Burst his Euphoria; but Truth will set you free.  I tell you right now that I pay for the look because I find that it pays dividends.
1) I LOOK A HELL OF A LOT BETTER SLY THAN I EVERY LOOKED WITH HAIR!  I had a Rats Nest up there!  It did me no good trying to style it...
2) I feel alot better about myself!  I look in the mirrior and I see my own man.  I see a tough, rough, sly, hansome brother who knows how to get the job done... This is my statement to the world.
3) I get taken more seriously.  People see me not as a clown, but as a clean cut business minded individual.
4) The Ladies Love It!!!  Dude, when you are sly, you stand out for all the right reasons.  Being Rough, Sly, Clean, The women want you, and the other brothers Respect you.

Dude, its never about cost.  I find it more fullfilling to shave than I ever did styling it.  its a Look, and you get what you pay for in spades...  What I would spend Styling it professionally (if I ever did) styled to get my hair to look as solid as I Look now with a shaved scalp: 45 Bucks a Pop, maybe 100-200 every two months... 50-75 every two for the look that kills always, Priceless!

What made me go bald. Easy. My hands.  :)

I was tired of the thining, graying mop that was on my head. The turning point for me was last month, when a woman where I worked guessed my age at being mid 50's.

I'm only 43.

Needless to say, it came off a few weeks later. And she loves it (and now tells me I do look my age).  ^-^

Picture it. Grown men in their 20's and 30's spending 200 dollars at a hair salon getting the latest emo combover cut or faux hawk. Buying expensive hairgels and spray to make their oh so pretty do's look even prettier.

Well truth be told ,this made me sick. And to show my disgust for what hairs control over men that 10 years ago were unlikely to even see the end of a pair of barbers schears do just a decade later made me want to shave my head. So I did.  Just didnt expect on how great it would make me feel and how empowered I felt. It became an addictive feeling to the point where I cannot leave the house without a perfectly slick smooth head. I have a full head of hair but got addicted to the sly look...
for years I had the wish to shave my head completely smooth until I did it 5 years ago... let it grow again but in early 2006 I shaved it again and since then I'm keeping it... only during winter I let it grow a little.
I don't shave everyday (in fact I don't even shave my beard everyday) because I'm lazy and also I like very much the process to let it grow a little, shave completerly smooth, let it grow a little again... re-shave it... that's real fun. Love to rub my bald scalp when I'm done.

When i was in Athens in 2004, one of my cousins spent 150 euros on a combover cut, my cousins were making fun of me because i was shaving my head on a daily basis, i started shaving my head in the early summer, i was in Athens in August of 2004

I guess a combination of genetics and it was the only real alternative. I had a really thick head of hair till my early 20's. I inherited this from my father (I also inherited the baldness) My father went bald in his mid thirties so when I was in my teens I figured that I have a long time yet, but it got to me before that. I married really young. Both me and my wife were 19 when we got married. We are both 33 now and have 4 kids the eldest being 12. I had all sorts of hairstyles in my youth ranging from flat tops to curtains and even a mullet. When I started to recede I kept my hair shorter like keeping it cropped and brushed forward. Anyway to cut a long story short I used to keep dropping hints to my family that I would get rid of it once it started to recede badly. I received fairly negative opinions mainly from my mother who said that my head wasn't the right shape and was not symmetrical. I have more of a protrusion on my right then on the left at the back. Also because my parents are divorced my mother really hates my father. She used to say that my head sticks out at the back like his and dreaded the day that I would go bald. To be honest a perfect head in my opinion is one that has very little protrusion and is not angular. Anyway I did the deed about 3 weeks ago. Initially my wife didn't like it but now she does and says it looks much better. My mother still does not like it and keeps reminding me about my head shape whenever she sees me. It has become a bit of a neurosis for me now because of constant bombardment. But all my colleagues and friends really like it. Just my mum who doesn't. Or maybe they are just too polite to say anything!

Shakf I don't think your friends are just being polite. The look really does suit you bro, I think your mum's being a bit unfair really. It's not your fault if you look like your father! I don't think you've got anything to worry about either regarding head-shape - If I were you I'd be tempted to ask her to stop with all the negative comments - maybe tell her she's already made her opinion plain & you don't need to keep hearing it.

I mean if you're wife likes it ... well that counts for more than what your mum thinks doesn't it? .... do your kids like it?

They laughed at it originally because they are young but thats about it. They would laugh at any bald guy really because thats just the way kids are. My friends really dig it and asked why I didn't do it earlier! They said it makes me look smart and sharp.

"smart and sharp" says it all.  You look extremelly hip and cool with a shaved head.  its absollutely the best thing you can be doing .   It's too bad about your Mum.  I can understand her feelings; but she just needs to accept the fact.  Maybe try to remind her in subtle ways that you are NOT your father (even though you look like him).   Just to say it one more time; you ROCK the sly look.  It'd be a shame to go for any other look.

Picture it. Grown men in their 20's and 30's spending 200 dollars at a hair salon getting the latest emo combover cut or faux hawk. Buying expensive hairgels and spray to make their oh so pretty do's look even prettier.

Well truth be told ,this made me sick.

Being SLY is not inexpensive to say the least dude!! :Xo!
It costs as much buying all the shaving gear (blades, moisturizers, shave gels and creams) as the hair stuff I used to buy. In my case even more, since I'm shaving off a full head of hair.

What made me go SLY? Have to admit it started off as a bet. But I like the
look and there's no turning back! O:O

time to analyze why I decided to go for the shaved head.  I think that with the  way my hair was thinning; esp. at the front; that my "best" --  look would be shaved.   I had been trying lots of short haircuts; and I always had to fool around with the front a lot to get it to look "right"  And although it was nothing like a comb over; I found I was fussing around with the front in order to make it look "fuller."  I really detested the fact that I looked like  a 'balding' guy who didn't have enuf hair up front to make a regular haircut 'work.'

So i started going for buzzcuts; #3, #2 ....  shorter and shorter as everyone who knows me here knows.  Finally ; the buzz got so short that it was just one medium hard gulp and I was sly.
Like I said; bald is my best look.  And by 'best' i mean .....  most striking ;  I like the way it 'hardens' up my regular looks.  I think I look my confident this way; look like i've taken a definite stand to go for a decisively, uncompromisingly masculine look . ....   I guess that about does it.

John

Ben I dont recall saying being Sly was cheap or inexpensive. But I can sure as hell tell you its a lot cheaper than the 50 bucks I used to shell out every 6weeks to get a hair cut and the countless gels and conditioners and the 500 dollar hair straightener that I used to use.

I too am shaving a full head of hair and sure it can be tedious to have to shave but the rewards from it much outweigh anything else.

I never had any bald spots But my hair started thinning  due to use of anadrol and a few other combos .the estrogen blocker I was using didt work good enough and I wasnt going to use that skunk smelling cream that keeps your hair so I thinned a little on top ,so I started for awhile buzzing it without a guard on ,and one morning woke up started to shave my face and tried to fight back my hand but inched closer.....closer...closer ,and then WHACK! It vanished before my eyes lol,Been smoother than a gnats ass on a cool sunday morning ever since

when your on a juice (chemical muscle enhancement) cycle you use estrogen blocker's so the gallons of new test that you have dont convert to estrogen.

What made me go bald? Donations!

For the past few years I have participated in the local Heart Walk (for my son). This year I wanted to make things a little interesting and also blow the doors off of my past donation totals. SO, I got the idea to do a head shaving fund raiser. I set the goal and the date and started to watch the donations roll in. Let me tell you, if you want to raise a lot of money for a charity, a head shaving fund raiser is the way to go. The goal was met before my October 1st deadline, so I took the plunge over this past weekend. I love it. It will be hard to let it grow back in - if I do at all :)

I shaved my head 3 times my Senior year in high school.  The first 2 tries, during football season, were not pretty.  Number one resulted in a reverse mohawk the width of the trimmer end of my Norelco shaver, the second drew blood the night before the Homecoming game.  Needless to say I had a professional take care of the really heavy cutting for the final attemt during basketball season.  All 3 times I let my hair grow back out, because I still had good hair.

Fast forward to 2 years ago.  My hair was thinning horribly on top, and I had let the rest of it grow way too long because I was too lazy or too broke to get a haircut.  My sister, married to a fellow Sly Guy, kept saying that I should just shave it all off, so one day I told her to grab the dog clippers and meet me out on the porch.  That was the end of my hair as I had known it, and it felt good.

I must as well officially introduce myself here. I'm from New York and had hair transplants at the age of 23 when my front receded badly 30 years ago. For the lst 10-15 years, they looked great despite the fact that when the wind blew from the East (LOL) my hair would blow in the wind. Around 2000, my hair totally receded badly. I had to use hairspray with a combover  and whatever to cover the hair transplant spots so that it didn't look like pubic hair dots. It was awful. But I knew the day I had them done in 1977 would not last forever. What to do? Between shaving, dermabrasion, surgery and laser (like my pal Jason F), I came up with a plan of attack with my plastic surgeon and dermatologist to rid myself of several rows of hair transplants. Unfortunately, there are several scars from the event. It's the price I had to pay. Ran me around $4000 between surgery and laser. Dermabrasion was painful, laser was a nuisance but this is the look today as you see in the pic. Let me tell you one thing. Transplants work but you pay a price for them at the back end. Anyway, I started shaving my scalp and it's simple. No hairspray, no fuss and no mess. It was the only way to go. Anyone who has had this problem can feel free to write me at M45922@aol.com. I'd be happy to help out.

Marty, what a painful and mighty expensive ordeal you went through!
I truly empathize with you bro. I too started thinning out in the front and would use lots of spray to conceal it. Luckily I had a less expensive option. A blade and a can of shave gel!

But I guess you felt you didn't have any other option 30 yrs. ago. There probably weren't any headshavers back then. I would think a cheaper option for you would have been some sort of a piece. So you had to laser the transplanted plugs. Ouch!

Listen dude, your still a young guy so enjoy your new life as a SLY bald guy! O0

I'm glad to hear you're finally rid of all that stuff Marty. We shall carry the laser torch in to the 21st century! I'd much rather see someone spend money on that then plugs.

I always wanted to shave in high school...I was an amateur bodybuilder and alot of people in the sport are bald, as it's a clean look. I never got the guts though, and never had any thinning. Once I turned 21 and the hair started to really thin all over, including the sides and back, I decided to take charge. It took alot to do it, as 4-5 years ago it wasn't nearly as popular as it is now. I really think this look has grown leaps and bounds in the past decade. I'm really glad I did it, and even happier that Im making it permanent. I think the look is going to be more and more popular as time goes on. Women prefer it to combovers, and men do too.

It's a win-win!

In the summer of 2001 I was 36 and my friend asked me to help chaperone teenagers on a mission trip to Colorado Springs. They have a large population of homeless. My friend had work planned in the mornings and outdoor activities planned for the afternoons. A all-expense paid trip to the Rockies sounded like a good deal so I agreed.

The Friday before we left I went to get a haircut. I went to my regular barber shop and sat in the chair of my favorite barber. She was a beautiful woman from Russia.  ^-^ She didn't have a great command of the English language, but no one seemed to mind. I told her I was going to Colorado and I was going to hiking, spelunking and river rafting and I did not want a lot of hair to mess with.

Before I knew what was happening she had taken the clippers with a #1 guard and shaved right up the middle of my head from nape to forehead. I was so pissed  :Xo! but what could I do. I let her finish up and tipped her handsomely. I couldn't believe all my beautiful blond hair was gone!

On the drive home I calmed down and decided no one in Colorado knew me so what was the big deal? It's only hair, it grows  back. By the second day we were there I was in love with the bald head :@`. No combing, no brushing, no product - talk about wash-and-wear!

That was 6 1/2 years ago. About 1 year ago I decided to shave down to the skin. I can't imagine ever going back. HAIR IS FOR SUCKERS!!!  O0

From about the age of 25 on, I kept my hair pretty short on top because it was starting to thin. By the time I hit 35, I felt like almost anything I did was starting to look like a combover. My 17-year-old son decided he wanted to buzz his head at home, and we got a pair of clippers and buzzed our hair together. He moved on to another style a few months later, but I stuck with it. It looked better and was easier to care for. A few years later someone referred to it as my trademark look, although I had never really thought about it that way.

I gradually worked my way down the guards as the hair on top continued to thin. I went down to a #1 about six months ago, and to no guard last week. I finally went sly this morning...very glad I did. I guess sly is my trademark look now!

When I wasin my early teens I became absolutely obsessed with the idea of not having any hair up there. I was so envious of other guys my age and a little older who had little to no hair...so when I was 16 I got a #1 buzz and much to everyone in the world's surprise that night I shaved it smooth...and I was absolutely petrified to leave the house for about a week. haha. But the next summer I went back to it and kept a buzz--> bald for my entire senior year of high school and first 2 years of college. It then occurred to me that I should do SOMETHING with my hair before I lose it...So I did the short sides and gelled bumper thing. About a year ago I really was able to start noticing the thinning, especially in the light, so I made the concious decision to start buzzing down again and for the last few months did a no guard and more recently a triple 000 buzz. This last week I shaved for the first time in three years and I really don't forsee growing any long length of hair back besides maybe up to a #1...the thinning is just too evident.

Incidentally, the baldness gene mentioned many times in this thread comes from our MOMS...isn't that funny?

I have been shaving my dome for about two years now.  I've always had tons of hair, but once I hit 22 or so I could notice it thinning a bit on top.  It took me a couple years to think about shaving- not because of the look, but it just really didn't hit me as a viable option.  I was too consumed with the special shampoo / hair transplant ideas.

One day I just said "screw this," and proceeded to buzz and razor my head.  My brother came home and he was like "You...you bic'd it!!"  Everyone was pretty shocked at first.  I got the usual comments, ya know.  Now everyone is used to it.  My mom still gives me the "Nick, your hair wasn't that bad... Nobody even noticed the thinning spot" speech.  When I get that comment from someone, I just respond with "I'm an extremest; I either want all of it or none of it."  That usually ends it.  8)

On the flip side, I get tons of compliments from those who love it- mostly strangers.  I get the undercover looks from the guys in the gym that are balding pretty badly.  I can tell that they're imagining themselves doing it, and for this I'm glad.  If I can just get a couple people to shave their heads and rid themselves of the embarrassment caused by thinning hair, then it's worth it.

Thinking back on it, I kind of re-invented myself when I changed careers.  I left corrections after 15 years and went into the sales field.  Being able to express my individuality a little more and leaving the uniformed world behind, I changed everything.  I immediately grew a goatee because I finally could, bought a new wardrobe and shaved the dome.  Our department frowned on officers being sly because it might intimidate the inmates!

The prospect of going bald was never a big deal. All of the men that I loved & admired as a kid (my dad, my uncles, my grandfather) were either slick bald or sported some pretty narrow bald fringes. They all used to laugh at the idea of "rugs n plugs".

My grandfather always shaved his head, so I guess that I was primed to be a cueball from birth.

I, like Paul, had shaved my head for charity.  The first time was the '05 COPS for Cancer, which didn't last any longer than the initial shave before I let it grow back.  The 2nd time was last summer, when I organized the COPS for Cancer between all law enforcement in my area, and I ended up keeping it for a few weeks, but I went to a family reunion and caved to everyone saying I looked better with hair.

So back it came, but this time, I noticed it was really starting to thin.  Then came a rather traumatizing incident while on duty, and the stress caused it to thin that much faster.  So, at the end of January I decided to hell with it, chop it all off and to hell with what my family and everyone else thinks!

Since then I've had constant compliments from co-workers, friends and all kinds of random people while out and about.  I love it, and wouldn't even consider going back.

I'm surprised that I had not posted on this topic before!  In my late 20's I started to lose hair in the front of my head.  Eventually my stepmother said that if I lost more hair, I ought to get a transplant or a toupee.  Both grandfathers were quite bald and my dad's hair was quite thin.  So I was prepared for some sort of hairloss.  But a transplant or toupee was not my idea of a solution.  So eventually when head shaving became popular, I decided to give a go of it at a Seattle Mariners special event called, "Jay Buhner Buzz Cut Night".  So I got into a ballgame for free for having my head shaved.  I decided that I liked it.  But one time I grew my hair back and a co-worker noticed that I was really starting to thin in the back.  In fact, that kind of reminded me of that Seinfeld episode where Elaine was dating a guy who shaved his head only to discover that when he grew it back that it was thinning.  But in that case, the guy got paranoid.  For me, it solidified my decision to shave my head again, as I had also seen video and photos confirming the loss of more hair in the back and on top.  Slydom looks so much better!

I shaved off a full head of hair because I wanted to bald and that is why 11 years later I am still shaving it off.  (I did have a slight relapse when I great flat for a few years, but then I saw the error of my ways and shaved it off.)

wow, great thread guys. i starting with the receding hairline and thinning at about 18. i (think) i covered it up pretty well until about 20. rogaine, vitamins, shampoos, you name it i used it. even researched the transplant route. but i refused to take any pills or have any "procedures" done. i was completely distraught over the whole thing. very depressed. finally a month ago (i'm now 23, in college) i came home from a late gig at a bar with my band and i buzzed it low, then mach 3'd it all off. i woke up the next day and said "holy sh*^!" but i feel so free now. i don't have to worry about my hair any more. it's such a relief since i ride my motorcycle everywhere and don't have to worry about fixing my hair! family HATES it, but i feel like a new man!! remember, drunken lips(or thoughts) speak a truthful mind. so i knew all along what i had to do, shave it! it just took a case of beer for me to figure it out!

I started thinning in college, but my friends and family were too nice about it.  I kept getting the lines like "you've got a full head of hair" and "it doesn't look thin at all".  While I appreciated the positive comments, I was not blind.  :D

When it first started thinning I would think to myself that one day I would have pugs done and everything would be fine.  The thought of shaving my head never crossed my mind.

Fast forward a few years, I accidentally got my hair cut pretty short and liked it.  I managed to grow it back out, but it didn't look as good.  I had this awkward way of styling my hair to cover the spot.  It wasn't quite a comb over, but I'd put some gel in it, spike it up and let it dry a little, then push it forward for the illusion of body lol.

It finally got so noticeable that I began the online research only to find SBG.  I read the pics and testimonials.  At first, I still had no intention of shaving my head, but thought having it trimmed short would be the best way to go.  So, I trimmed it to a #3 for a few weeks.

Then I caught myself staring at the thinning area in the mirror and that was the end.  I didn't know if it would look good, but I was tired of worrying about thinning.  Lurking the SBG site pushed me over the edge and I wish I would have shaved my head years earlier lol.

There's so many reasons I did it, here are just a few:
- I was already losing it (receding hairline and thinning top)
- I wear hats a lot (not to hide it so much, but more that I love how I look in hats) and being Sly allows me to never worry about hat hair
- My hair would grow so fast that I would have to get haircuts every two weeks, which adds up in terms of money pretty quickly
- I had to spend a decent amount of time styling my hair to get it too look just right. If it was a little bit off, it would bother me
- I hated dealing with rain ruining my hair, same with the wind
- My hair would get really greasy after like 12 or so hours, for example, in the morning, the oil from my scalp and the gel/wax I used to style it would just make it gross

I really could go on...

But being Sly is great because:
- I never have to worry about how my hair looks throughout the day or when I remove my hat or when I'm in the rain or wind
- I feel much cleaner throughout the day
- Anytime I get a little hot or sweaty, sticking my head under a faucet is no problem at all, even at work
- It looks pretty badass on me I think

What made me go bald.  You mean, besides the cursed gene that took half my hair?   :x!

After I kicked out the ex in '04, I decided a new look was in order.  Tired of "pretending" I had styleable hair and not interested in transplants, combovers (gawd), concoctions from the local chemist (as if I wanna trade my sex life for hair), I got it buzzed to #2, shortly thereafter to #1.  Kept it that way since, shaving it off a couple of times for kicks.

Been nearly two weeks now in the SLY style.  I like it.  Wife's not so impressed, she likes some stubble, but I like the feel.  Still getting used to it... I almost feel "phantom" hair.. like there should be something there but there's nothing but smooth (or velcro, depending on when I last shaved) dome.

My hairline started to recede when I was 19. I began buzzing my hair again right after wards. I then started getting high and tights and I kept going shorter. Then I started getting skin fades with  #2 at the top and finally I was getting a skin fade with a #1 at the top and then lastly I went to the barber and had him shave me completely bald.

Going bald for me was easier for me to except since pretty much most of my teen years I had a buzz cut and I always liked really short and shaved hair. I knew at a young age that if I was to go bald I would shave my head completely bald. Especially when I looked at my mom's side of the family and saw my uncle and grandpa's horseshoes. I knew I never wanted to look like that.

Back in 1997 I was going to be up in the woods for about 10 days and decided to shave the head. I wasn't fooling anyone with the lack of hair on the top of the dome so I figured it couldn't hurt. About  a week into the trip, a good friend (female) came through the area and stopped for a visit (purely platonic I might add). She loved the look and the rest is history.

For the record I had thinning red hair that was kept pretty short anyways so shaving it down to the scalp wasn't too much of a stretch.

My wife has never seen me with hair other than photo's and says that without a doubt I look better bald than I did with hair.  Lucky for me!!

Had cool hair in school. Went into the Marines and hated how I looked shaved, but LOVED high and tight. 9 years after my first high and tight, I noticed it was creeping up.  1 time I shaved it bald, had 2nd thoughts, and wore a hat until it grew out. Then in May or so, I found this site and shaved it all off. Took me two days to leave the house. Finally did, got used to it, and don't even think twice now. I loved the shaved look, and am pretty sure I get more looks now then ever before.

I had serious hair in high school, was down to the middle of the back. My senior year I started to out grow my hair and I knew this by the skin poking out of the top of my head.  I kept cutting the hair shorter and shorter, then I joined the Army and the rest is history.

So early on set MPB and the need to have an easy way of keeping clean while out in the woods for weeks on end gave me the reason to go SLY

My scandal...

I was not losing my hair. I am 40. I have a nice thick head of hair and a firm hairline that is not receding or going south in any way. My problem was I had too much of a good thing. My hair, when I wore it, was curly and thick. I had this William Shatner "white boy afro" thing going. It grew UP and not DOWN.

Add to that I had dandruff, psoriasis, and all sorts of weird scalp ailments. I was using special shampoos, then conditioners. And curly? Yuck... just did not look good on me. It also manifested itself with flaky brows, crusty "t-zones" and all sorts of other problems.

I started clipping a few years back. Mostly because I started seeing gray! I usually did a #2 guard all around, and if I went to the barber I got a fade to a #1 on the sides. It grows VERY fast, I would need a trim every couple of weeks. People were used to seeing me with a buzz cut.

One day, as I went to have the wife cut the noggin, we could not find the guards to the clippers. I said to hell with it and we took it all the way down. I joked with her that I should just wet-shave it. She laughed and said "you better not..."

So I went to the mirror a couple of days later while she was gone, lathered up the dome, and took a disposable razor to the noggin. A couple of nicks, and with trial and error, I got it down.

It was like a snowdrift, though, all the dead skin and flakiness from the dandruff and psoriasis. So over the next week I used an apricot scrub and a good loufa to beat the hell out of my scalp. It got red and a little splotch for a few days, but once thoroughly exfoliated, my scalp took on a new glow.

That week I bought the HeadBlade and discovered different products. Over the next few months, I got into a routine. I am pretty much "set in my ways" now and have a pattern and set of favorite products. About ten minutes in the shower each day (sometimes I skip a day) and I am sly.

That's about the same amount of time I spent shampooing, conditioning, using moisturizer for dry "t-zones" and all the other crap I did when I had hair.

Well I guess it does not matter that my hair was NOT thinning, and I really liked my hair! I had really thick dark hair and always had the new style of cut that was popular. When I started fighting I went from Mohawks to faux-hawks, and colors of all kinds. I spent all kinds of money on products to keep my hair perfect, shinny, or dull, hard, wet looking and never really thought too much about ever having to worry about hair loss, I was lucky.

Then an old friend from back in my childhood came and payed me a visit. That friend is Alopecia, and it has changed my opinion on a lot of things. I have never been vain, but always tried to keep current with my looks. To say that having hair fall out over a number of days, not years did (does not) not bother me would be a LIE!

I have lost hair in my face, head, and eyebrows and for someone so in touch with keeping the right look to stay marketable, (maybe even Metro-sexual, HA!) it has been very up and down! I know that the re-growth of my hair is not really something I can count on, so option (B) shave it!

I still have emotional ups and downs about my new look, but you guys have been great, and the advice and knowledge I am picking up will be priceless I am sure! Thanks guys, and for whatever reason you went SLY, I hope that you can find comfort and joy in your choice, I am going to try!   Paul :-\

Male Pattern Baldness started hitting me in my mid-late 20's. By the time I was in my early 30's, it was starting to look pretty bad. I began by buying some electric trimmers and gradually was using shorter and shorter attachments every time I'd buzz my hair. After using the shortest attachment for awhile, one day while lathering up my face, I just kept going and rubbed the shaving cream all over my noggin, and shaved it all. I threw the trimmers away and I've never looked back. That was 12 years ago, and I've been Sly since that fateful day - and no regrets whatsoever!!  O0

ive always had thick dark curly hair until junior year when i noticed it was drastically receding so i started cutting it down to a #2 and kept it that way for about 2-3 years, until i was 20 and my hairline got a lot worse. then al the depression set in so i tried shaving it. i was pleased with it so i kept shaving it ever since.

I have to agree and say thats probably one of the only negatives about shaving my head. I was totally fine with my bro and his friends teasing saying I looked like a neonazi/skinhead of sorts. But when random people assume that you might be racist or treat your differently, its quite upsetting. I've actually had someone directly say to me, why are you racist? Thats the first and only thing they said to me, I was never accused of this before... I figured since it's been popular in hollywood movies and quite common now a days amungst average joe's to have a shaved head that people would understand that, but sadly theres still some people who are oblivious to the rest of the world.

Well I'm 20 myself so I guess were even  :P As for why I started going chrome dome?? I had a co-worker tell me I should try it seeing I always did a no guard buzz cut once a month at the barber. I was 19 at the time and I wasn't so sure about it, but I figured if I don't like it, it will grow back. So after I got my head buzzed one day I went and I bought some disposable mach 3's, or something of that nature, along with some shaving cream Then I proceeded  to my neighbors house. My neighbor also is a Q-ball, and I asked him to do it for me for the first time. He was hestitant about it at first, but he said sure. The reason I asked him to do it was because I had never used a blade myself. *former electric razor user here* So I came into his garage and my old friend watched while my neighbor shaved me up. He used a big dog water bowl for water and slapped a towel around my shoulders. At first we used the gillette shaving cream and razors, but he didn't like using those. He went and got his gillette shavel gel and Sensor Excel and started using that saying that "it could shave a yetti clean. After about 30 mins, he's used to doing it in 5 or less, he had me smooth and shiny. During this whole time though he wouldn't let me see or touch it so I was quite curious. Once he was done he slapped on some nivea for men aftershave patted me try and told me to go ahead and take a feel. My friend caught on camera my facial expression when I first touched it along with a few other pictures during and after the shave. *Email Me For pictures Daniel.Giampietro@gmail.com*
After touching it I had to see it and went up to the basement bathroom and looked at it. I just kept saying duuuuude over and over. I loved the way it felt and when I stepped outside his garage a nice cool breeze ran over me and gave me the goosebumps like no other, it felt amazing. Once I got home that evening I really liked the way it looked and said to myself, I think I can stick with this...and Its been history ever since.

everytime i shave i cut myself AT LEAST once lol.

Much practice you require young jedi...  ;D

As for MPB, my hairline had receeded a little bit during my time in high school. It is quite obvious that the hair on the top of my head is thinner than the hair on the sides/back, although I still have some hair up there, I choose to shave it off, I think it'll look stupid with it grown out. So there was some slight sign's of mpb starting but I wasn't too obvious or bugged me. I just tried the shaved head on a whim, but turned out I really liked it, so I stuck with it.  8)

Had been buzzing for years with #2 and #1. One night I buzzed with no guard. Looked in the mirror,,,,,thats almost bald,,,,,,,hmmm,,,grabbed my fusion and a handful of shaving gel (what I used on my face then, use Slick all over now) and just took it all off. Man what a feeling that was, amazing. Been shaving it slick since. I can....go up to 3 days w/o shaving, but thats it. Wife says she likes the velvet feel. of course thats day 4, which happens only in a blue moon.

I would like to introduce myself.  I am known as Papa Don.  I am new to the Sly Bald Guy Forum.  I have only been
Sly for about a month now.  It is the only way to go.  For as long as I can remember, I have fought the worst hair on the planet.  Course and wavy and thick.  Whatever I woke up with I had to wear all day.  Shampooing rarely helped. My neigbor who is naturally Sly and I were talking about my problem and he suggested shaving.  It took a while to build up my courage.  One day I said, "What the heck, if I don't like it, it will grow back.  Well--Fat Chance!.  I am now SLY FOREVER!!  I would like to thank the guys in the formum for all the advise and tips.-

I'm very proud to be bald, after years of dealing with a hair-loss
phobia. Now, I can look in the mirror and smile at the bald guy there,
and not cringe in terror.
I used to go 6 months or more at a time in between haircuts, so stylist
would cut my hair so short that my high forehead would show.
You do think about the fear. At least I did.Eventually my desire to
overcome my phobia led me to have my hair cut into a GI in 2001.I was
afraid I'd chicken out then.
I backslid into long hair a few times. Then in 2004, I experimented with
cutting my own hair with no guards on clippers. To see my own bald head
was both scary and exciting. Then I lathered my head up and shaved it
smooth for the first time.
Can you imagine? There I was after years of hair loss phobia looking at
my totally bald head.I was shocked and delighted at the same time. I
realized then, I was happier being bald.
I shave my head regularly now,and I don't want to ever be a slave to
hair again.This is feeedom.

I always had very short hair since the army at 17 and I am now 44. I buzzed it all that time. Then when I was a correctional officer 10 or so years ago I decided to shave it. I never liked my hair and always found it to be a pain to take care of and suffered from many scalp problems. I buzzed it not only because it was cleaner in that environment and less of a security risk when in physical confrontations but also because I had a very bad scalp condition with scabs and flakes that only goes away when I shave. The good thing is I like the bald look, so does my Wife and all my family and friends. If I grow it more than a few days, they all say, "looking shabby there, time for a shave". I do have a collection of ball caps for the summer when I am out for a long time and toques (wool caps) for the cold months for obvious reasons. I can't immagine having hair again. :popo

It was monday night around 1:30 in the morning, I was typing my homework and something kindled inside and I asked my friend if I could borrow his clippers (with my regular hair cut, I look like a lawyer or a professional of some sort of business) and I said well here goes nothing. and well first the clippers and then the blade, I looked at it, and got used to it. The only way I'll go back is if my wife tells me that she wants it there.

Why did I go bald?-
because I wanted to. I did it for ME and no-one else. Its a feeling of taking control. I used to be embarassed when someone commented on my thinning hair. Now when someone comments I say "yes its great and I love it". My boss saw it for first time this morning and said "cool haircut Stevie" How chuffed was I.

I would recommend it to anyone.

I was in the Military and kept my hair short anyways.
In the Coast Guard one of my side jobs was Fire Fighter and I found that it was easier putting on the mask being Sly and not pulling any hair when I cinched down the straps !
Not to mention I would look terrible with a Comb Over.

Well....Lets see, Ive been losing it since I was around 13...hairline getting farther and farther back.. Then it just got thinner and thinner. So Ive always buzzed it. During wrestling season I would BIC it. But after a while I tried to grow it out.

I spent two years growing it, and it never even made it to my shoulders. Thats when I knew there was no hope, and just cut it the way I like, Smooth and Sly. It was simply to hot in the kitchen for me to deal with it, much to unprofesional looking, and it just didnt fit me realy.

My wifes still getting used to it, but hey, its for me, and since it dont grow anyway, it wont be back.  8)

I had been thinking about shaving my head for some time now... not due to MPB or thinning hair.. but because I like the bald look.
Then, in October my Mom and Sister were both diagnosed with breast cancer.  My Mom started chemo almost immediately, and after her first treatment, she started loosing her hair.
I decided that I was not going to let my Mom go bald along, so I shaved my head.

I like it.  My wife is getting to like it.  We'll see how long I keep it this way.

It is funny, I used to think that shaving my head would save me so much time in the morning... Actually, it has added about 20 minutes to my morning routine.  I have to shave every day to stay smooth.  In fact, if I shave at 5:30 am, I have noticable stubble by lunch time... it's crazy!

Mom is doing relatively well with her chemo treatments.  Her tumors have shrunk a bit.  She is more than half way through the treatments.  She should be ready for her surgery in February.  Her cancer was pretty far advanced, and her tumors were the size of baseballs, so she has a long hike to recovery.
My Sister had a double mastectomy 3 weeks ago, and found out that she will not need chemo!  Which is awesome news.  She is already on her road to recovery.

I was going bald in my 20's.  About 12 years ago now, (back when I was 38 or 39), I got tired of having the barber cut my hair shorter and shorter so that it wouldn't look stupid.  One day, I just said to the barber, shave it all down, because it's not coming back.  Then, I talked to a friend of mine, who was on AOL at the time, and he talked me through the process of shaving my head for the 1st time.

I started noticing the horseshoe pattern around 25... everyone else probably noticed and didn't say anything years before.

When I took my wedding announcement photos and asked the guy to 'shop in some hair, I started looking into my options... though deluding myself that I ok the way I was.  I didn't like the idea of doing the creams/pills for the rest of my life, and transplants would leave a signature if I ever did go sly.

I would avoid being in pictures cause I was then forced to see just how far gone my hair was.  Where I work, they have mirrored glass, so every morning I kept seeing this Mao Tse Tung "skyline" walking into the building (sunlight really shows how little you have, compared to incandescents).  Finally I said "Fug it".... got some good shiate for my psoriasis, and once that cleared I went sly... at 37.

I first went bald last year due to an accident with Nair !  I was removing the hair from my shoulders and neck and as usual had covered myself in a thick layer of gunk.  After a few minutes I thought that things felt a little different, but did nothing about it until the time came to wash it all off and I found that I had a huge bald patch on the back of my head due to some over enthusiastic application of Nair !! As a result I had to shave what was just a No1 crop all off.  I loved the experience at the time, and liked being bald, but the hair grew back and I thought nothing more of it until about a month ago when, on a whim, I shaved my head again.  Since then, I've not looked back and what was shaving my head once a week has now become a nightly occurence.

God did it with genetics.  O0

My hair was growing in a Krusty the Clown style.  I tried to grow it longer, but the sides and a patch on the top got thick and the rest was just gross.  One day my daughter said (in the most encouraging voice a preschooler can muster) "Daddy, daddy, your bald spot is shrinking! Your hair is growing back!"  It was really just that it was so long that it laid all over the "spot." (It was *not* an intentional comb-over - the hair I have left is just weird when it gets longer.)  I got a haircut the following week and she said "I'm sorry to tell you daddy but your bald spot is big again."

She's getting used to the shaved-bald look.  She hated it at first and said it's because I don't look like her daddy as much as I used to.   My sons are cool with it too, though my oldest is hoping he won't lose his hair like his old man.  My youngest hasn't got a clue yet... still an innocent 4 years old.

What made me go bald?  My razor!  I always wanted to try it out.  No real MPB, but the hair was just baby fine (always has been) and a real pain in the patuckuss.  There came a party, dares, a razor.... well.... you get the idea.  Shaved by a sly English bloke who said I would love it.... and I do!

I went bald because I wanted to be a new face in the crowd. I'm the only bald kid at my high school and it feels GREAT! Thing is, I've got a bit of a receding hairline that'll probably get worse with time (since my dad, uncle, and grandad went bald in their early 20's), so it probably helps that I embrace the future now.

I was getting tired of watching my hair recede without the power to change it.  MPB in an even pattern me made feel like my appearence was not kept clean.  I clean shaved head has changed that and I am starting to get used to the money I shave.  I also look forward to a clean head shave with my Mach 3 and headlube each morning.  It just feels like a great way to start the day.

Well I have no MPB as of yet, but I like to reinvent myself one in a while, and I have always liked the chrome dome look. Plus I'm a huge Patrick Stuart fan too. The other day I was in Wal-mart shopping, while buying razors I said to my self. "Hmmm. I wanna shave my head." I picked up the razors (Mach3 the only razors for me) and bought shave gel. My six year old daughter (I have full custody of my two children, Brodie 8, Mara Jade 6) over heard my comment and told me she didn't want me to shave it. I asked her why and her reply was. "Because I'm the woman of this house and I'm telling you that you aren't", That's almost word for word too. What'll I do when she's a teenager? lol. Went home and did the deed that night after putting the kids to bed. BTW Mara Jade loves my bald head now. And I think it makes me look tougher. I'm a small guy, I need that, lol.

Thining...right down center....I hated the way it looked, so started keeping it short with clippers, over time I was using clippers without the guard on...made for a nice transition, so when I started shaving, most didn't even notice at first.

For me I had always been curious to try the short buzz cut. I had relatively thick hair and I was keen to get rid of it. I had been travelling in Asia (Bangkok to be exact) and one day decided to walk into a barber shop and get it buzzed. When I told the girl that I wanted a 0 blade buzz she seemed a bit surprised but she had the job done in 5 minutes. I was pretty happy with the look but needed to shower to get the finer hairs out of my neck. It was at this point that I thought what is a milimeter of hair and proceeded to shave the remaining stubble off. It must have taken me 15 minutes to get the job done, now I can do it in 5.
It was no pressure as I was backpacking and no one knew me. I must admit saying two days after shaving that "I wanted my hair back", but I kept it sly for a few weeks and have basically kept it so since then 10 years ago. I love the look and feel of a smooth head so it has not been hard to maintain but I am currently curious to grow it out every few weeks to see how much MPB is showing through. This is a new development that has really started to show through quite noticeably in the past 6 months and I think it is a rapid progression. So there is my story.

Although I normally have a full head of hair, it was extremely grey in patches and was very hard to control.

I have a thick head of strong hair that grows at an unbelievable rate, and was impossible to tame and keep in any sort of style for more than 10 minutes.  I had been giving myself a buzz cut to a number 1 for the past year when finally last week after reading some posts on this forum decided to get rid of it once and for all.

The only problem is because my hair is so thick I'm seeing a shadow within about 4 hours of shaving it!  :Xo!

Nevertheless, so far I don't think I'll be growing it out again any time soon.  8)

--Josh

This is very close to the same story I have in my journey to slyness.  I  hated the way I looked when bald while I was in Army basic training, but got into the H&T and 'horseshoe' cuts, and kept it very short through most of my military career (I know I have old pics somewhere as proof).

Around 1998, I spotted more and more sly guys out and about, and decided to at least give the shaved look a try.  If I didn't like it, it would grow back.  There is a very good barbershop in Arlington, VA, where I went to get my H&T tightened up weekly.  They also give straight razor head shaves.

One day, I walked in, got in the chair of my favorite barber, and told him to 'shave it all off'.  He asked me three times, just to be sure that's what I wanted.  Each time, I said 'Yes'.  He broke out the clippers, took it down to the skin, and proceeded to lather my dome up for that first shave.

Awesome.  If you haven't been to a barber for a headshave, you are missing out.   True, you can shave more closely than they can, but the overall experience is worth it.

I have been shaved smooth for 11 years, and have no plans to grow it out anytime soon.

My father was bald. My six uncles are bald. And they all have been losing their hair in their early years. At 18 my father was almost completely bald. When i started loosing my hair at the age of 16, i didn't really noticed it. Two years later i was sure that i would be completely bald in the next years and i was afraid about that. MPB got me!!!
The day i shaved my head for the first time, I immediatly knew that i've made the good choice. I felt freed from that stupid fear.

I quickly built self confidence as a bald man and I've got more self confidence today that i've never had in my whole life. Baldness is not such a problem.  I would never go back.

Once again, sorry if this post seems strange. I'll try to improve my english.

I wanted to say that it's the fact that I'm balding anyways that made me take the razor and and let the head shine. But really I'm not always sporting the clean look. Sometimes I let it grow for weeks and sometimes I shave every day. The fact is that I like the way it feels not that much how it looks. For me it's the same if I have a balding head with a #1-#4 trim or clean shave. My friends and family don't mind how I keep my "hair". And people who don't like it are not worth knowing in my life. There's no such thing as "I like you, but I don't like your haircut". My hair or hairlesness is me.

My friends and family don't mind how I keep my "hair". And people who don't like it are not worth knowing in my life. There's no such thing as "I like you, but I don't like your haircut". My hair or hairlesness is me.

Simply put and very true Tommi, I agree wholeheartedly. If a person doesn't like you because of your hair, or lack thereof, then they don't belong in your life.
Keep that outlook!    O0

Had Alopecia in the fall of 2007.  What happened is, I got a short haircut after months of growing out my hair, and saw a large round bald spot on the top of my head.  Right away I went to my doctor, and got diagnosed with scalp ringworm.  Then, when nothing he gave me worked for that, I went to my dermatologist, and he said it could be bad psoriasis.  He gave me something which helped me with the psoriasis I had, but the bald spot was still there (it was on the top of my head).  Then another bald spot appeared  on the side of my head, so when I went back, he diagnosed me with alopecia.  He injected me with steroids in both spots, and told me come back in another month.  When I went back,  he said he saw some progress (I didn't think there was any), but he injected me two more times.  After waiting a few weeks, and actually seeing very little hair grow in the spots, I just decided to shave it all off, literally.  I had a bunch of curly hair, and just decided to grab my dad's beard trimmer, and shave it all off.  Yes, it was stupid, and I couldn't even finish the job.  I had to actually have a neighbor lend me his electric razor for cutting hair, and have my dad finish it for me.  He then shaved my head with a regular razor, completely bald.  It looked good I thought, and my grandmother (who didn't approve of it when she heard I was doing it), said she was surprised how good I looked.  It was the most confident I felt in a while.  I no longer had two stupid bald-patches on my head, nor did I have psoriasis.  That said, at first I was scared of shaving myself, so I had my dad do it for me every other day.  When it grew out in stubble, I saw that the spots we in fact improving more than I thought.  They we're almost gone, but still noticeable with my hair growing out.  After going back to get more injections, and him refusing to do it (he said it would be bad in the long-run, as it would cause Indentations on my head) I then let my hair grow out again, for the longest time infact.  I then was nervous about cutting it, thinking maybe the bald spots we're never fully gone, so I told my dad to shave it completely bald again.  He did, and after a few days of letting it grow, the spots we're all gone.  There was no need for me to shave my head bald, because I no longer had alopecia.  I kept doing so anyway every so often, because I like the look.  It's easy to maintain, and I don't have to worry about psoriasis or bad hair-cuts or anything.   And whenever I want to let my hair grow out, I do it, though I never let it grow out for more than a week now (some exceptions aside).  I also shave myself now.  Also, if the alopecia ever comes back (which it might, my derm told me), it wouldn't matter as much, because people are already used to seeing me bald, and I have gotten used to the look (plus I LOVE how easy it is to maintain).

My father had a full head of hair as did most of his brothers except for one (Bobby). Both of grandfathers had full heads of hair. My mothers brothers also. My grandmother told me when I was a teen I would go bald because my hair was far to long and was straining the roots. When I was six or seven I told everyone that when I got older I wanted a haircut like my Uncle Arthur (not a blood relation). He had the classic horseshoe with a very shiny dome. Lo and behold I got my wish!

Firstly, I had always had a full head of hair -nobody in my family had problems w/going bald, etc.. but in my 30s I started experimenting w/buzzing my own hair w/a clipper I started trying to do a more tapered style, then I just got into buzzing the whole head w/really short guard or no guard. I also tried doing more military cuts like an HnT, I liked the Flattop but for me, I found it difficult to maintain -so what I settled on was the buzzed w/no guard look, then I would periodically shave it just to see the difference. After I saw that there really wasn't too much difference, and began growing more facial hair in I decided just to keep shaving it -but I went through a period where I kept questioning if the look was for me (since I wasn't losing the hair & when I shaved it revealed such a pale scalp) so what I did when I shaved was apply one of these instant Tanner products to the head -and thought it looked a little better that way, so I began shaving it a couple times a week. In Jan '07, I decided I wanted the bald look to be permanent -so I found this Yahoo Group on ScalpTweezing, bought an Epilator & began the process of tweezing my own 'MPB' pattern on the top of my head. Scalp Tweezing takes a lot of effort, because you have to grow some hair in for the Epilator to grab onto..but I've been doing that now less frequently & I'm on a schedule of shaving every other day & I've been shaving for years now -have always used the disposable Xtreme 3 razor & Edge unscented shaving gel. My family at first questioned why I shaved , since I had a full head -but they stopped asking after awhile..

I wouldn't use anything else..the others are more expensive, and if you have more than 3 blades against your skin -I think the more inclined you are to getting cut & irritation. Xtreme 3 is also the one that just about ANY store has -so they are easily available.

Since we first started dating my wife always told me she didn't like balding heads like her fathers.  He is mostly bald with some hair on the sides.    I told her right away that I was going to end up like that because my mothers father lost his hair very early on.   Well - my hair started thinning in the front about 5 years ago and has progressively gotten worse.   It was not really not very noticeable to anyone but myself.

I complained about the thinning and my wife bugged me to look into rogaine or plugs.   I told her that was never going to happen and at some point in time I was just going to shave it all off.   Initially she told me no, but over time the tables turned.    I kept threatening, somewhat in jest because I knew it bothered her.     Finally my sister and my wife called me out and told me to stop threatening to do it.  Put up or shut up!    So I did it and I really like the results.    I had no idea what I was getting into with regard to maintenance, products and the associated challenges but I am overcoming and do not plan to ever go back.

Hi,

Does your wife like your look now or..? I believe it's up to the individual on how HE wants to look -not what other people want, after all -you're the one that has to live w/it.
My family didn't like my shaved head, but it pleased me & that's all that mattered.

I'am bald because of my agressive male pattern baldness...With that being said,i've had a few stints where I shaved my ehad and then grew it back a week or two later, but since I shaved my head two days ago, something is different this time.I WANT to be bald! The other few times, I did it so I didn't have to worry about watching the horseshoe pattern on my head grow..But this time,i just feel I'm meant to be a bald man.I'm a little self concious still but I love how I look.I feel for once in my life I really have decided how I want to look.I love the bald head, and I plan to grow my beard out and get some length.I'm thinking like a two inch beard which is uncharted territory for me! For once in the last 6 years since I started going bald, I'm actually looking forward to my hairloss so I'll have an extra smoothe dome when I shave.I know it's only been two days this time around, but I know from here on out that I'm bald for life!

I'm kind of bald by choice.  I do have a receding hairline, but no MPB.  If I wanted to grow a full head of hair, it would be high on the head, but a full hair nonetheless.  However, I have been cutting it very short for several years becuase it is just so easy.  I have a hectic schedule, I have been working midnights for the last 15 years and I take a 3 hour nap before work.  The last thing I want to do is fix my bedhead hair before heading off to work, so the bald (or in my case shadow) style works for me.  I shave my head with a clipper once a week and for the rest of the week I don't have to worry about my hair.  However, since visiting this site, I have been contemplating doing it every other day, but in my case that kind of defeats the purpose of being maintenance free.

I hate to break it to you, but if you have a receding hairline, you have MPB.  Whether or not it progresses to a completely bald top surrounded by a horsehoe is anyone's guess.  But recession at the hairline is how it usually starts.

Not necessarily.  A receding hair line is not male pattern baldness.  It is simply a receding hairline.  MPB is exactley that a pattern that starts at that the crown of the head and can also recede.  You get the gene for baldness from your mother's father, so if your grandfather on your mother's side was bald there is a very good chance you will be bald.  I have the exact hairline as my grandfather.  He was receded but never did get MPB.  Also I'm 45 and usually by that age you may thin a bit, bt as you grow older, but you would know if you started getting MPB by then.  I used to be a barber and in barber college, we went over all the different types of MPB.

The ironic part is I could care less if I did go bald, but what I have at this point is probably what I will die with.

You may be smarter than a Fifth Grader, but you're in disagreement w/ every major medical site on MPB on the web, for example, Mayo Clinic--a little place you may have heard of defines it as:
Male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). For men, pattern baldness can begin early, even in the teens or early 20s. It's typically characterized by a receding hairline at the temples and balding at the top of the head. The end result may be partial or complete baldness.

Nothing there about the "crown" or vertex being the start.  Actually if you look at the Hamilton Norwood Scales, loss of hair at the vertex does NOT occur in all mpb patterns.
I say this to help you understand and avoid what I thought--that it would stop, that it "wasn't so bad".  That's delusion, that's just wrong.  If I had faced this 10-15 years earlier I would have saved myself so much embarassment.  Don't delude yourself, if your hairline is receding you have mpb, how far it will go, what pattern it will take is the only unknown at this time.  But, you do not have a full head of hair when you have a receding hairline--face that fact.

You are right, I stand corrected, I was always under the impression that MPB had hair loss in the crown.  However, there are many, many people who have receding hairlines that still have very thick hair until very old age.  My grandfather receded, but never lost any hair on the crown and the rest of his head remained full.  He was just thin in the front.  So would that be considered MPB if it never progressed?  He never had a combover because his hair was all there, just a receding hairline in the front.

Here is a definition I found on the web also.

i]Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. It usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown, and is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition.[/i]

A standard used by many dermatologists & frankly some of the hair "restoration" hucksters is the Hamilton-Norwood classification.  http://www.dermweb.com/hairnailsmucousmembranes/diagramofheadspage.htm

As you will see, many of the classifications of mpb aren't the horseshoe, there are extremes of receding hair line etc. But, anything other than a I is mpb.  That's just what it is.  Believe me, I had a receded hairline, as as one wise brother here once said his was not a forehead, it was a fivehead.  Frankly mine was two hairlines at the end, and island and a strip that I tried to coach into a hair style everyday.  I could really kick myself in the a$$ for avoiding the truth for so many years, just an f'ing waste.  It really still makes me mad, really mad, when I think about how stupid I was.

I can testify that it happens in many different ways.  I have no idea how much hair I have left on the top of my head now.  Before I shave in the morning it feels kinda fuzzy but I suspect I would get nothing more than peach fluff if I grew it back.

Mine disappeared almost uniformly and at the same rate along the top leaving me with the classic MPB shape and horseshoe.  Not sure how much more there is to go, but at the moment it has been pretty much the same for 3 years or more (i think)

MPB can be really early, mid to late teens--by the time I started law school, two of the guys in the class were total maxed out bald!  This is early 70's so no sly they just endured the rim.

My daughter had a crush in college w/ a guy and he was going bald as a 1st year, and skin by 4th year.  He never, but never, went anywhere w/o a hat.  The mid to late 90's still weren't friendly to the sly look as a general matter, particularly in a relatively socially conservative school like UVA.

I work w/ one guy whose hair loss is pretty much unique, at least to my experience in seeing it happen-and when it happens to you, somehow you look at every bald and balding head around.  This guy's hairline is still there, but there is a relatively even thinning so that under the right light and if he's buzzed it to the right length the bozo ring is clearly delineated.  He's very careful about the length of the buzz to avoid that, but I see it clearly.  The time is not that far off, and he's acknowledged it, that the blade will be his solution.  He's in his late 40's.

MPB is a stray bullet, it has no direction--but it sure hurts when it hits, and the only sane cure and remedy is Sly.

LOL  I reckon I got most of you beat.  I started losing my hair at 15.  Sorta slow process.  The benefit at that age though was Friday nights when I was 16, I'd slick my hair back and get beer for everyone without getting ID'ed.lol  I tried every horse potion out there at the time (70s) to get it to grow back.-all junk.  Probably the same junk is being recycled today under different names.  Fact is, if there was something out there which could legitimately grow back hair, the manufacturers would be billionaires.  Too bad they take advantage of people still today with the crap that is sold.

One day ya wake up and say screw it and not care about it falling out.  Wished though that I would have shaved it off several years ago though. O0

Right around age 18- early 19 I was growing my hair out, it was about collar length when i noticed something when my hair was wet, when i pulled it back i had a very bad receded hair line, and it was obvious when my hair was wet or blown back in the wind. So i got it caught to a #3 buzzcut, I kept this for a couple of months, when I cut again I went to a #1 buzzcut, then a #0 cut, Shortly after I shaved it. However, I only stayed shaved for a day and hid it under a hat until it grew back. I agonized with my MPB hairline for over a year while lurking on this site until just two days ago I shaved again, refused to wear hats. Went to a party and Had one of the best times in forever I got barraged with compliments and girls were telling me how much better I looked.

Ive been shaved for about 3 whole days now and I'm thinking its going to stay that way for a very long time :)

Perhaps it is a "ritual" that most men with MPB go through regarding their receeding hairlines.  Trying to search for answers, denial, and looking for the "cure" plus several other emotions, etc.  I went through this many many years ago.

Personally, I think that the scum who profess to be able to cure mpb and sell horse potion cures should be given hard time or shot.  They prey upon vulnerable people and make millions off their hopes and suffering.  And if a chic just likes you for your hair, then she ain't worth jack or judy s**t. :*))

I said it before.  If there was something on the market that "cured" mpb or grew hair, it would be worth billions and all over the news. Don't waste your time, heartache or money on these psuedo cures.

i think you're right on that ritual thing, i spent many late nights looking for the "magical cure", and wasted at least about a good $400 on BULLS#!t foams, pills, and potions. i also went through all the same stages( Denial, fear, bargaining, anger, acceptance ). but you have to realize that if there really was such a magical cure it would already be pattented and selling like crazy, and there'd be a lot less sly guys out there, and from what i've been noticing it's quite the opposite. I've been seeing a s#!t load of more sly's walkin around. it's like there's some sort of sly cult going around and getting into peoples' heads lol (looking around suspiciously, COUGH COUGH SLYBALDGUYS! I am unlucky and lucky that both sides of my family have baldness in the gene pool.  As a result when I was 19 to 20 I started to thin out up top.  My step mom is a hair stylist and gave me all the snake oil hair growth stuff you could paste on your head.  Guess what didn't work.  So I started to develop the Picard ring while in college and used the cheap method to hide it, Hair Alternative Treatment(HAT).  Needless to say I used to joke that if some of my hair wanted to leave my head then all will have to go, a nice empty threat.  So on to why I shaved my head.  While working at a movie theater the superman movie came out and people joked that I should shave my head to look like Lex Luthor.  I had told them no, but while getting my hair cut like normal I had mentioned it to the stylist.  She said she would love to do it if I wanted to do it today.  I decided to go for it and next thing I know she was taking off my hair with a straight blade( pretty cool for a first time).  Completely shocked everyone at work the next day.  The only time I let it grow was when my parents came to town and I did not want to tell them I had shaved.  But from then on I have stayed bald.  The future wife loves the look and stated she would have said no to our first date if i had hair.  Needless to say Bald Guys Rule!

I started receding at 20. Nothing too bad, and nothing some hair gel or a sweatband couldn´t hide.
A few more years rolled on, and then noticed thinning at the back and also a further thinning on top from about 25.

Got depressed quite a bit, ended up wearing caps and beanies almost 24-7, and very rarely ´did´my hair at all and only really styled it if I couldn´t get by without a Cap on e.g going to Clubs and some Bars with strict policies or Weddings/Graduations etc.
I looked on the Internet at everything, I hated what I saw in the Mirror every single day without a cap or some type of product to hide the bald bonce.

I started wearing dermmatch and nanogen fibres to cover my thinning hair. Up to last year, I was cutting it very short every few weeks, but the concealer was awful, you were paranoid that someone could touch your hair, or if you sat back on a cream coloured sofa, laydown on a pillow etc. I even had a ´hair´pillow which I used to sleep on Monday to Fridays as I´d plow my head with concealer, save doing it in the morning.

All through 2010 I was depressed with my Hairloss, and the years before too. I hid behind Hats, Wind, Certain areas (Pubs I wouldn´t go to or risk going to incase the Bouncer asked me to take my Cap off). Then the days that I did go out without a Hat - I´d tend to pick darker lit places, non-windy days or if there was Wind - to and from the line of fire aka the Wind into the Venue I was going to.
I was paranoid about People noticing the concealers, which I´m sure they did. If traveling by Public Transport and on a Bus to Work, People opening Windows on warmdays and my combover-concealed dome´s hairs flapping about. Taking a Mirror with me in my rucksack to check if my hair was in place.
Not playing Sports without a Hat, or massive Sweatband/Bandana on and even then concealing my thinning dome.

That is why I shaved it off. There´s no way People were taking me serious. I was constantly looking down when talking to People and on the backfoot for someone to touch my Hair incase they came away with a black paint like mark on their palms and if the light especially from the Natural Sunlight was showing my 2 different Colours of Hair haha.
It´s funny now, but I can´t believe I went through life like that for a few years.
Determing if I wear Hat not on if I want to! but if the Weather wasn´t Windy enough.

I also, decided to go traveling again in 3 weeks I´m heading to NZ (I´m from Scotland) and knew I couldn´t keep buying concealers, hiding in the bathroom with a portable mirror applying concealer before heading outside, the expense of buying concealers.

I shaved my head last Sunday and it´s been one of the most fantastic Weeks of my life. Of course, I was a bit nervous of meeting Friends and Family for the first time, but everyone has been super positive. Some folk haven´t even mentioned it! I was of course nervous incase People would look strange at me, none as yet, if anything - it´s been super positive.

My Best Friend from School who I´ve not seen for 6months, I met him last night and he has a Shaved head 1 all over his Head and we were laughing just when we seen each other for the first time. Also another Friend who I met at the party on Saturday (last seen with a short cropped mohawk/dyed hair job) now was sly too and we both looked at each other laughed and said ´´looking good´´ and discussesd the perks of going bald.

Sorry this is long, but it´s been great reading everyones stories on here and why they jumped in!

All the best folks

MPB is the clinical answer.
Preference is the reason for remaining sly.

hate to break it to you, but if you have a receding hairline, you have MPB.

My maternal grandfather never lost his hair. I get it from my dad's side of the family. MPB can come from either side of the family. A receding hairline is a type of MPB, its the same chemical DHT that causes the hair loss.

Yep same here my moms dad died at 73 with a full head of hair and my dads dad lost his hair at 18. Quite a window of difference, also a receding hairline is an a sense a type of MPB, but its how much further it goes that determines if your balding.

I needed a change.  So I started with #2 buzz, waiting a couple weeks and then #1.  Waiting about a month and then a 0 buzz cut.  Got home then the next day, lathered up with shaving gel and now Sly.  Love it and going to keep it Sly for life.

What made me go bald?

Well when I was in AIT ( Advanced Individual Training) on weekend we had pass, but during this pass I forgot to go o the base barber. We were told before pass that if one solider in the company was out of regulation with there hair everyone was getting a buzz cut. So needless to say I did not want to be the on responsible for that so that night I shaved my head. Well I liked it so much I kept doing it. Have been doing it to this day.

Altho my friend asked me about a month ago why don't I try letting it grow back out (he loves his hair type of guy) and I laughed at him and said have you seen my dad (he's bald started when he was 19, I'm 25), It prob wont grow back lol.

After a bad haircut, I decided to trim my hair short. I trimmed it shorter and shorter, until no guard. Then after adjuting to my new look for a few days, I decided to razor shave my head. The first time was a blast. I was delightled with my new look. With time, I became addicted to being bald. It's been 5 years now and I still love it. Would not go back to me hair, that's for sure. 8)

The various clippers for buzzing very short are only about $25 or so at Walmart or CVS. And maybe a buddy has a set of clippers you can borrow in the meantime.

I have a friend down the street who moved recently and 'lost' his clippers in the move.  I just go down and buzz his head to a #1/2 or so every two weeks.  Nice way to get to know make a friend as well.

Once your buzzed, a standard beard razor will take the rest off easily. There you go. You're looking good sly.

I am very deeply touched by this post. Reminding yourself every day how fragile life is, and to embrace it... this sentence is worth to think about.

Good that you did not need any chemo, but anyway, your words are worth to be considered.

Looking back three generations....dad surprisingly kept all of his hair, grandpa was crown bald and great-grandpa had male pattern baldness...so I guess it was hereditary, though oddly enough my brother still has all of his hair....In a way I am a victim of karma because as a kid I used to make fun of bald men, but as I got in my 20s I started having the receding hairline I watched a lot of Kojak reruns and thought how would I look with a shaved head.....for a while I just clippered it and then in 2008 (after many sleepless nights about my hair) I finally took the plunge (by then I was losing it on the crown as well) and at first it felt weird, but as time went on my family and friends got used to it, and I doubt if I grow my hair back for fear of looking like a "clown" (sorry Grandpa). My only issue is trying to set a pattern when to shave but with the help from this site it shouldn't be too hard...my 0.02

Hereditary, although it skipped my father and Grandfathers on both sides, my great grandfather was a cue ball though. My hairline has always been high but around 20 it started to recede more, then the thinning increased, and after repeated surgeries on my leg it really accelerated, I'm 22 now and have no other choice than to be sly (looking like a bozo with a horseshoe is not a choice). On another note, the surgeries made me allergic to alcohol... go figure

When I was younger I had really long hair, it went down to mid back. At the age of 18 are started to notice that I had a receding hairline. I did not want to walk around looking like I was balding, therefore I decided to walk around bald. I first started shaving my head by using clippers, I then found Head blade about 3 years ago and i fell in love. My wife really likes the way my head looks. However deep down I think she would prefer that I had hair lol.

I would say its bad genetics. I started receding at 16. I went through a couple of years of denial, and then said screw it.
After much soak searching, and asking why - I remembered that every man my mother has ever been with has been bald.
Go figure.

For me, I just like wandering around the busy streets of London carrying my sly look. And cycling along the streets with the wind in my hair... sorry... wind whistling around my head.

The other day, I was in the supermarket running an errand for a friend who wanted me to get some shampoo for them. Shampoo for hair, I thought ? "Computer says no!".

So I'm in the haircare aisle, choosing the right shampoo. Noticed a puzzled fellow shopper next to me. I turned around and said jokingly "Do I look like I need shampoo ?!?". How we laughed.

Little bald stories just add to your day.  :)

If I'm honest, always been curious about shaving my head clean. But never had to the nerve.

For years, had worn a skinhead (buzzcut) which got shorter and shorter. For the last few months, was clipping unguarded. Saw the forum and liked the idea of the 30 day trial. Been pleased with the way I've taken to the bald look so quickly.

I've been shaving clean now for 5 weeks. Just can't imagine growing hair. When I get up in the morning, look forward to shaving away the stubble. Being bald feels so normal now. It's just me.

MY hairline started receding in my mid-20s and began to accelerate rapidly as closed in on 30. I was going to shave it all off on Jan 1st, 2012 as part of a new years thing but chickened out.

A couple months later I was at a professional society dinner and saw this guy who had to be close to my age but also had thinning hair. His hair was just a bit longer than my own (down to my shoulders), same color, he also wore glasses, but had no beard. What was weird about it was that so many times I had looked at my own hairline in the mirror and just went "it doesn't look that bad, it's just the way it is." But I looked at this guy and thought to myself "what the heck is he doing, he needs to just shave it all off" and then I realized what a hypocrite I was and that the way I saw this guy was most certainly the way others see me.

Two weeks later (last week) I worked the courage, bought a set of clippers on my way home from work and locked myself in the bathroom until I was done. Chopped everything off, buzzed it down, then grabbed my fusion razor and took it all the way down to the skin.

The new bald look has grown on me though I don't find it to be that much less maintenance than my hair was. I only cut my hair 3-4 times a year and the time I don't spend shampooing and conditioning it now gets eaten up by the time needed to shave my head every morning (turns out my hair grows only a bit slower than my beard.) On the other hand I never have to worry about hat head anymore plus my hats are purely for style now as there is nothing hidden beneath.

My hair started thinning when I was about 16-17 years old. By the time I was 20, it looked terrible. I had tried all the shampoos and medicated drops like Rogaine and stuff, but nothing really worked. I finally just decided I would shave it all off and I've felt great ever since. After a couple weeks of getting used to it, I stopped even thinking about being bald, and that was a big problem on my mind up until then. I could not glance into a mirror without worrying about my hair. I really do feel free now, going on 2 years.

I noticed that my crown was thinning, when I was 18 years old by taking a picture with my new camera.
At first, I couldn't really believe it, so I was in some denial.
The following months my hairloss got worse.
My hairline serverely receded an awful lot, and my crown got a lot of thinner.
I then decided to go for the buzz-cut, which was alright for some months. People didn't notice my hair-loss.

By the end of the year I chose to shave my hair, since I by this time had a baldspot and my hairline looked ridicilous.
My hairloss was quite hardcore...!!

So yeah, it's really my only option for a "hair-style".  :*)) And I'm 20 years old now.

I had tons of hair in high school. During my first year at university, I let it grow quite long. My friends attacked me one night with the clippers and I was alarmed at my receding hairline...
Fast-forward a few years...
Noticed severe thinning at my vertex. Obsessive mirror-observing followed. Friends and family told me it wasn't THAT bad and I wondered if I was overreacting. At my last haircut, the barber gave me a concerned look, put his hand on my shoulder and asked, "are you doing anything about your hairloss?"
I bought my HeadBlade the next day.

barber gave me a concerned look, put his hand on my shoulder and asked, "are you doing anything about your hairloss?"
I bought my HeadBlade the next day.

What a good barber, there needs to be more people like this who will help people to make the leap, mine were very encouraging, but most will just keep taking your money to try and 'cover it up'. I'm glad you made the choice to go sly Doc, that's one shiny smooth dome you've got right there!

To get rid of the gray.

I may be 107 years old (running joke among me and the young 20-somethings I work with [I'm actually 57]) but I don't have to look like I'm 107.

I have receding for 20 years, recently a friend of mine at work some how were talking about haircuts and said that I had a good head to shave it, I told him I had thought about it before but never did. By chance my wife mentioned it a couple of days later also.... so I did.

What made me go bald?  A razor blade and some encouragement from friends who were bald.  I like the look.  I've been sporting very short hair for several years. I think it looks distinguished.  Started noticing how many guys 'out there' are also shaving their heads bald.  Started reading SBG. Y'all've (can you do a double contraction), been an encouragement and set a good example for how positive a bald head can be.

I hope to be an encouragement to those who are balding by showing that whether you have hair on top or not, it can look good and be a positive thing.

OK, guys on the fence. Get our the razor and shave your head.

I have Folliculitus Decalvans, which is an autoimmune disorder that makes the body attack the protiens in the hair follicules, causing the hair to fall out and scarring at the root/follicule.  I was a (nearly) sly- 1/16th Wahl cut for about a year and a half until I made the mistake of asking my wife what she wanted for Christmas "To grow your hair back"  Well, I did, and I hate it.  My hairline in the front is very uneven, with one side significantly higher than the other.
I'm going to go sly...

I'd been thinking about it for a long time but never really had the courage despite encouragement from friends every time I cut my hair. (Taking it down to an eighth of inch for the past 12 years.) I finally just decided that I was tired of having hair and I convinced myself to shave it off with a reminder that if I didn't like being bald I'll have hair again in 3 or 4 days.

I went bald because I always liked the look and I have (I think) a nicely shaped head for it.  As an added bonus, now that I'm older, it got rid of the grey.

Think curiosity and the appeal of the bald look attract many to getting the razor and experimenting. But that's just my opinion.

Guess that mainly explains why I've ended up with the sly look. And like you, this forum motivated me.

I really don't get why people get so upset (sometimes depressed) about there hair falling out. Well I do because we're all different and different things affect different people. I wish my hair would fall out lol. I hate hair. I'm antihair lol

Two things made me go bald.
First, I have always found the totally bald look compelling - I think everyone on this site looks awesome and I have felt this way since my early teens (when there were very, very few guys completely bald - maybe Yul Brynner and Telly Savalas and that was about it!).   It just took me a long time to work up the nerve to even try it.  You are all an inspiration to me.
Second, my hair.  It is wavy and hard to keep cut so that it looks well groomed.  I had the worst case of "bed head" every morning.  Whenever it got humid, the stupid stuff would curl.  Whenever the humidity fell, it got limp.  And I live a busy lifestyle, so who has time to sit and wait at the barber shop or make and keep an appointment with a stylist.
So finally one day I worked up the courage to take it all off.  I had tried crew cuts of various types, but in the early '90's all the barbers who knew how to do a good flat top or buzz cut were retiring.  I had grown it out again and the same problems were the still problems.  I grabbed clippers and sheared myself down to stubble and shaved it.  And loved it.
But I didn't know about the 30 day challenge.  I would make it two weeks and the let it grow out again, at least into a buzz cut or flat top (I learned to do them myself and make them look good).  I shaved for two weeks every summer but never went the whole 30 days.  Finally I just stuck it out and made it to 30 days (and I hadn't found this site yet, but I knew the truth of the 30 day challenge when I did find the site!).
And what keeps me bald?  The great feeling of running my hand over my naked scalp.  The great feeling of keeping my scalp naked and clean - it really does feel better and I don't feel clean if I don't shave every day.  This site also helps a lot!

Thanks!  Go for it!  I would find your natural hair texture a challenge but you have had it all your life and probably know how to deal with it.  All I know is that when my hair got curly it made me crazy.  If it had been straight all the time or wavy all the time I could have coped; it was not knowing what the weather would do to my hair any particular day that drove me over the edge . . .  LOL!

I mentioned my reason in my intro post, however now that I'm past my 30 days I feel entitled to putting it into words again.

I'm an all or nothing sort of dude, and when I discovered that I could no longer grow my hair as long as I wanted it to be, I went the opposite route.  I'd MUCH rather be bald than trying to be a longhair and failing miserably.  So CHEERS to everyone BBC and loving the lifestyle!

I until recently had a full head of long hair often longer than most women.
however i had what i believe is "widows peak"??
Wanted to deal with this on my own terms rather than "holding on"
i must be on of the lucky ones who does not get razor burn
for I used my braun shaver to shave my head down but decided to try the atx
so im getting the hang of it..
I have a weird shaped dome so If i could  deal with that
anyone on the fence should just do it.

I honestly do not know why my hair started thinning out on me, no one else in my family has this problem.  I buzzed it with clippers and no guard for a while every 2 weeks, but found that after a week it looked pretty bad as I have one spot on the top of my head that is still full and a spot right behind it where almost no hair grows.  I like being bald now.

Its really interesting reading about all of the reasons that the you guys have shaved your hair

Around march time, i woke up with my hair on the pillow so i shaved the rest of the bits down and went doctors and they told me i had alopecia, so i kept using the clippers but the patches on my head could still be seen so at 2 in the morning in august i decided the hell with it and used the mac 3 on my head. Lots of people have said i look much better with no hair then i did with hair. :D

As I have posted elsewhere on this site, I have had fairly short hair most of my life. In my teens I joined the Air Training Corps & then moved on to the Army Cadets & then Army Reserves (Territorial Army) & the regular army for a spell. Always had short hair during that time but never what I would call BALD. One summer, not too long ago, I went to my barbers for my regular summer cut (usually a #2 back-and-sides & #3 on top). When I sat in the barber's seat, my barber asked me if I would like to have my hair real short since it was so warm & I wouldn't have to go back for a haircut every 2-3 weeks that I had been doing. I agreed that a shorter than my normal haircut would be good change. The next thing I was caped up, the barber took the guard off the clippers & reduced my hair to microscopic stubble. He asked me to feel it. It felt like suede. Then he said to me; "Shorter?". I said yes. He took another clipper - a #00000 blade Oster & shaved my head. Now I couldn't see any hair...I looked bald but he asked me to feel my head.....weird.... I could still feel stubble, although I couldn't "see" it! He asked if I was ready for the next step.... with a gulp in my throat..... I said yes. Next he applied a lotion & then a hot towel to my head... Wow!! Next he took of the towel & applied warm lather.....Wow,again! Next came the straight edge razor & the head was scraped smooth..... Amazing experience........The rest, as they say, is history. BALD is BEST.

Why I will go bald is simple.
First it's because I shower 4 times a day when I train for competition, which makes longer hair (didn't cut it for 1,5 years until 2 weeks) useless, second I'd like to know how it feels.

Even right now with 6mm it feels nice to just wipe the towel one time after showering and move on, without having to stand there for 10 minutes to air dry it, so I can only imagine how quick it'll be without any hair! :D
Title: Re: What made you go bald?
Post by: Bilko1 on November 17, 2012, 10:26:38 PM
Thanks for the comments, guys.

MMArob: My advice to you is if your hair is only 6mm then your hair would be easy to shave off. Get the clipper out, no guard on and buzz that hair off. Then get that head shaved smooth, man. It feels great in the shower & takes seconds to dry-off.
Go for it, mate. Post some pics of before & after if poss so we guys can see what you lokk like, please.

Bilko1, great story. I can relate to getting shorter and shorter buzzcuts...then thought there is nowhere else to go after the no guard. It took me a while to get there but as you say bald is best. I will need to try out the barbershop shave at some point now there is somewhere near me that does it now!

I actually started out about 10 years ago cutting my own hair and cropping it gradually shorter. Even 7 years ago, I had it cut down to no guard with a beard trimmer. Much easier to deal with. Over the last seven years I've watched the top recede (and thin) farther and farther back, along with the appearance of a lot of gray. I'd started cutting the top a bit longer than the rest to try to maintain the illusion that it was the same length as the rest, but it was starting to look pretty bad on top.

Since most people guess my age as about 7-12 years younger than I am anyway, I thought it was just time to go for it and stay looking younger for as long as possible.

I was buzzing my hair for the prior 5 years.  Then a few bald friends said, you're hair is so short already, you might as well shave it bald.  Well, that got me going. And last January I shaved my head.

I love the results.  So I've stuck with it this past year. Plan to keep it up for as long as I'm physically able to shave my head. It's just the right thing to do.

Thanks guys, for your support.

;D  I'm lazy.  I always had long hair that was shoved into a bun.    For over a year i never even wore my hair down.  Seemed pointless.

So I finally decided to just lose the bun and go sly.  Plus I've always envied shaved heads and wanted to try it out since I was a teenager.

A few minutes shaving each day is so much less than the upkeep for my long hair and I feel pretty badass and love the look to boot!

Awesome story Bilko. You look great sly.

I enjoy going to a barber every once in awhile for a straight razor head shave. It feels good to be pampered every now and then.
That sounds like a great idea. I think I will do that.

I posted this on a seperate forum bur it looked good here too.

I've got the pattern bald gene from a grandfather I deeply respected and honor to this date, i truely wish I was more like him, I may be, I just got to be myself to find out.

I have had diabetes for 43 years now.  I received a pancres/kidney transplant in 2010.  I was dealing with a recededing hairline but fought it with creative hair styles like the flat top.  I developed a CMV virus due to the double transplant and was in the hospital with a tube down my neck to survive.  When I woke and was off the tube, I was able to take a shower, it had been over a week since I was "alive" and functioning and wanted a shower badly.  When showering with the flimsy soap they give, it seemed thicker than normal.  I got home and used my own hair wash and found it way thicker than I remebered.  I looked at my hands and they were full of hair from the CMV and the anti-rection drugs I had been going through.

When I got released I went to the nearest barber that i frequented because the hair loss was just to much for me to deal with.  I was 42 and felt I looked way worst and older than I was.  Patches of the front hairline was gone.  It looked like I was balding in spots.  I told the gal that cut my hair to shave it completey.  I then went home to try to shave it with a electric razor but it did not give me satisfaction.  I went to the nerest WalGreens and got the Headblade I was seriously looking at for a month or two and got it and got hooked on the little race car.  I could not belive how it changed my life in just a day.

With my flat top I was taken seriously at 5'4" but with the transplant drugs i had developed  osteoprosis and was now at 5'2"and noticed a difference.  With my bald head I was told that I looked like I was meaner than when I had hair and looked real good even for a short guy.

I don't really care if I look mean or not, I like the look I got.  A bald head fits my sytle and I have had it for over a year and don't plan on changing anything.

i use the HeadBlade and love it.  I can and enjoy shaving my head but still can't stand shaving my face.  My face just has too many curves and hair growth patterns to deal with.  I love useing a single blade on my face but i dislike shaving my face even more.  Wish it was as easy as learning to shave my head with all the complex hair growing patterns.  It's actually a lot of fun shaving my head and only took me a few times to learn.  I constantly learn about it and it's fun.

I'll get a posted pic soon, this pic was taken on my 34th bithday at Mt. Rushmore.  I need to get updated pic's for my profile soon.

My hairloss was part genetic mostly medical, as a child I had a radiation surgery that I would later learn did nothing but kill the hair on the top of my head. I started thinning around 18 and it only got worse in my 20s. A couple years back I started to embrace my baldness and started getting buzz cuts. Then I figured what the hell I'll shave my head. When I first expressed interest in shaving my head (on facebook) I was met with nay sayers, then after I did it they all changed their tune. My parents occasionally ask if I'm ever going to grow my hair back out, to which I say no.

Except for the top of my head I have a reasonably fully head of hair. I just hate looking in the mirror and seeing skin popping up out of hair; it makes me feel like a bird nest with an egg in it.  :*))
So I full on Lex Luthor it.

Both my father and grandfather went bald early at a young age. So I knew it was only a matter of time for me as well but was shocked when my hair  started thinning at 18. I was a bit immature and thought it will get thick again... Im still young but boy was I wrong. By 24 I had a massive bald crown. Got so depressed that I completely let myself go. Put on loads of weight, started drinking and smoking (pretty sure these bad habits also contributed to the hair loss).

I was in a dark place... Still feel that a part of me still hasn't left that place (I know im being over dramatic). Heres a picture of me from 2 years ago... Scary right... lol...

+1 Greatnessinc. Sahil, you have the perfect head shape for the sly look!

I went sly for the first time when I was a teenager because I was sick and tired of my hair - it is naturally wavy, dull brown, very thin and prone to dandruff. On top of that I was born with a cowlick on the right hand side of my forehead which makes my hair completely impossible to style in any way - every day was bad hair day, I had to put a helluval lot of effort into it, got real paranoid about the way it looked... back at that time I was very much into heavy metal (well still am tbh) and all of my friends had long flowing manes, I was trying hard to fit in but ended up looking like a freak and not in a good way (I still shudder when I see pictures from those days :D).
Eventually I got so fed up that I just walked into the barber shop and asked him for a Rob Halford cut :D predictable shock with the family, lots of arguments and nagging, but I liked the look enough to stick with it and I've been either sly or very closely buzzed for the last 16 years. It's part of me and I just couldn't see myself any other way... besides, now I couldn't go back even if I wanted to, seeing as my hairline is slowly but surely creeping back. :D

I was (still am) on a business trip for a week and went for a haircut last friday. The following two days I always had to look at the receding hairline at the temples (maybe it is just in my head). And in a mirror in a fitting room I could see that the hair on top is also thinning a bit. So two days ago I went do a barber and just asked for a baldie. I have not been home since and will return tomorrow. So no reactions so far (only on the phone).

I unleashed my inner baldness due a couple of factors. I have been really aware more and  more of the area of thinning hair at my temple and a lovely spreading bald spot at the back. Been going grey fast the last 6 months too and though sod this for a game of soldiers. Tyler's 30 day rule video was the turning point for me and I just dived right into baldness (very nervously though). I still have moments of doubt about what I have done but they are overpowered by the moments of loving it.

Started losing hair in my early 20's. Not sure if it was just genetics or an unhealthy lifestyle. Tried medicated shampoo but got tired of fighting a losing battle. BICced my head one day, and loved the feeling.

Since then, I just rock it bald. I wear baller caps so I don't get burnt. Use moisturizer with SPF 30+ when I can find it,  I make sure my caps match my suit. Fashion is dope.

Most memorable experience is when I had a girl who COULDN'T STOP LICKING my head all over. We'd get down to business and she's be all on my dome like I'd covered it with honey (or vegemite - case by case).

We were "encouraged" to find something to boost ratings for a sweeps week. It was Friday, I was alone at  home, I found a pair of clippers in my hand and then some water, foam and a razor....and I was bald. Fifteen years ago.
BTW, we gained four rating points over CBS....

My inspiration was a practical joke on my wife. I had been wearing my hair "high and tight" for several years, and this one week in July of 2001, we were on a short vacation with her parents. Well, my wife, her mother, sisters, and our daughters took off shopping, and her dad was at work, leavings e to my own means. I had gotten out of the shower, and looked in the mirror and thought "you need a haircut." And it just happened from there. Needless to say they all freaked out when they got home. It was awesome!  :*)) That was on a Wednesday. Friday I would find out my mom had pancreatic cancer. Then I kept it shaved for her, she wouldn't be the only one with no hair.

After she died 3 months later, I realized that it was an ok look for me. I was used to it. I haven't looked back. My wife and daughters can't remember me with hair, and my son and grandchildren have never seen me with hair.

It's the little events which make me stay bald.

My new manager commented on a project which I finished last year. She said "don't know how you did it, I would have torn my hair out !"

To which I replied "I had hair before I started the project !"

How we laughed in the office.

Great story mr J, the bald pate seems to be a never ending source of amusement, but once a man truly owns the look (as most of us here do!) it's always a good laugh rather than embarrassment or shame. I remember when I first shaved, if people made jokes I would get really self conscious, but now I love having a laugh at my own head. And I have SBG, and guys like you and Harry that joined at the same time to thank for a lot of my improvement. So I update my previous reasons... I'm bald because it was meant to be!

You're right, to avoid any embarrassment, you have to be the first one to joke. Like you and Mr J., the one who is ready to joke about himself is free of any shame.

My wife finally convinced me.  Being a barber/beautician by trade, she see allot of heads every day and decided I would look better with no hair rather than what little I had remaining on top.  I initially just couldn't take the full plunge and started out with wearing about an1/8 inch but after three days we shaving it down.  Glad I did - looks much better and gave me a reason to grow my goatee again.  Everyone really likes my new look!

Well.. due to the fact I had a rather large bald spot on the crown of my head anyway, for the last few years I had kept my hair cropped super close to the scalp.  My bother flip flops back and forth between the sly look and fuzzy. I liked the way he looked when he shaved it.  So I finally was like "screw it, I'm getting rid of the hair!".  And here I am.  SO far loving the look, feel, and compliments!  Just started blade shaving last night LOL

My road to Sly started with a very short summer buzz cut. Then sitting one evening I thought I wonder what bald would look like. My buzz cut was a 00 so I thought I'm nearly there anyway.

So I went to the bathroom lathered up and used my DE razor (carefull!)

The look was amazing and I instantly loved it. Next morning I thought oh that's special. That's just me staring back the real me not something created by a barber.

I found this web site and saw the 30 day video and thought ok. Let's do this. Next Monday will be two weeks bald and I still feel the same as I did the first day.

I've said on other threads. Best thing I ever did. The inner strength I have is worth it alone.

Like many of you fine, smooth chaps, my story is one of gradually disappearing hair. My crown was super thin and the longer I let it grow the worse it looked...

About 4 weeks ago I decided to not clipper my own head for a change and went to a new shop in town. I told him I wanted like a #0 and all over. He talked me into going shorter (his own hair was pretty short) and it was like a #000.

I got home and realized just how short it was (it's pretty fair when it's short and darkens as it gets longer). Nothing was standing between me and just going all the way. So I hoped in the shower, lathered up and broke out the razor. The rest, as they say, is history (so far)...

It will be 4 weeks in 2 days!! :)

I always had a full head of hair until I reached my 30th birthday. At that point I started receeding at the forehead and by the time I reached 35 I had a bald spot as well on the back of my head, albeit a small spot I was getting very thin in the back. At a family funeral I noticed older relatives in their 40's and 50's with significant hair loss. I realized I was doomed to end up like them. A coworker of mine clippers his head down to a zero and I've always thought he looked good so I decided to give it a shot, but I went straight to razoring it as I prefer the well groomed look. I got so many positive reviews and I really liked the look and feel myself that I knew instantly the look was a keeper.

I always had a very thick head of hair until I was 33 years old.  My last style was long, waist length dreadlocks that I had for eight years. Then, one day I noticed my hairline was thinning a bit and I thought it was because I was pulling my hair back too much. Slowly, two or three dreads would start to come out,and so I made the decision to cut the remaining dreads off.

However,I had plans to cut them off any way because I was getting bad headaches and neck pain, and it was getting too expensive. After a near fatal and unknown illness that put me in the hospital for three months,I found out that my hair fell out because of Alopecia. So,after I was released from the hospital,my hair started to grow back slowly, but I didn't want to deal with hair anymore,so on my birthday last year(July 9th.) I shaved my head. I cannot begin to describe how liberated I felt rubbing my hand across my newly bald head. I immediately threw away all the hair products I had,and I was so happy. To this very day,I can't think of a reason why I want to deal with hair again.

I'm sure you rocked the dreads Nikki but you can definitely rock a bald head! I hate to hear that you went through sickness though. I'm sure it made you appreciate life even more.

As far as my road to being bald goes, I noticed a huge bald spot at my crown area one day while looking in the mirror from behind. One of my uncles commented on it so that was what prompted me to look. I knew I was thinning but didn't know to what degree.  Not too long after that I buzzed my hair shorter over time. I've been bald for a little over a year and I still love it! The compliments I've received have been outstanding.

Bald by choice here, first did it because i wanted see how i would look, decided to keep it razor shaved for a couple weeks in order to  get a little color on my scalp, not sure why that was important since my plan was to grow it back, but anyway as time passed I became accustomed to it, then eventually i began to like it. Well the time came that i had wanted to begin letting it grow back, got to the point where my hair was about the length of a #2 clipper guard, and realized i missed being razor bald so, out came the clippers followed by shaving cream and a headblade razor i purchased that morning. Its been a month and half now total, and i doubt ill ever grow my hair out again. Besides at 37 im beginning to go grey, and since i need to buy razors anyway, it saves me both a little cash, and the hassle of dying it.

My mother was surprisingly indifferent to the news that i had decided to keep my head shaved, i had expected some rather negative reaction from her. But then again, she has yet to see me since i shaved without a hat on. Lol. As a gay bald guy, my boyfriend initially was skeptical of my new look, but has since grown to like it, and he has been quite a bit more affectionate towards me than previously. Female friends comliment me quite often, but otherwise reactions have been indifferent. With one exception. My best friend, who i oove like a brother, and who i had asked to help me razor shave the first time, was willing to do it, but completely shocked, and didnt seem to like the idea of me being bald. We dont get to see each other often the last few years, however, so as far as he knows, ive been allowing it to grow back, since that was orginal plan, and i did start to let it grow back briefly, during which time was the last the subject was brought up. Im kinda afraid to tell him, but i know eventualky he will find out. Hopefully, he will react in a surprising way, same as my mom, who, for reasons to be expected based on my previous statement,  i was also afraid her reaction.

Call it sly intuition i used to fear it and then i happened!!!I started going bald at 20 full on bald .Shaved my head and liked went to college and got the piss taken out of me so spent the next few years doing the usual cover up hair style rogaine hair fibers ect. Took me a while to accept who i am .Now if you don't like me and my bald head ya can feck off. Its amazing how you grow to accept it with time .

Having my mpb kick in at 18, spend the next couple of years trying to pass a combover off as a full head of hair.

The MPB gene made me do it. I have a choice, either look like Bozo the clown when it grows out, or keep it shaved. The fringe look is not for me. Just saying....

I've been into the bald look for many years and I didn't have confidence or age on my side to keep the shaved head going. I'm going BBC because it's cleaner, easy to maintain and makes me feel like a million bucks.

I've had a massive crush on men with shaved heads going back to grade 3 when my teacher had a shaved head. I just love the look of it. When I was 13, I got a buzz cut that I hated which made me think I could never pull off being bald. However, I've also hated my hair most of my life. Its natural curly and its so darn thick. I can't maintain a hairstyle that I like. I hate my natural colour and have coloured it so much that I'm surprised that I haven't damaged my hair and scalp. My hair also grows ridiculously fast. I swear I must have been a Chia Pet in a previous life. The final straw over the summer was dying my hair blue which I re-did a month ago. My friend has a shaved head and I'm envious of it. In a couple weeks my mom and I are going to a taping of The People's Court and I highly doubt they'd let me in with blue hair so I conceded I'd have to buzz it. Then I thought I'd try shaving it and if I didn't like it, it'd look like a buzz cut when we go to the show.

I love my new look. I hope I live a long life so I can keep it this way. I regret not doing it much sooner. A lot of people's mouths dropped but once they get over the initial shock they say they love it. I have received more compliments over the past few days then I did combined throughout the years when I changed my hair colour and style!

I just wanted to shave my head 1 time to see what it was like. That was over 5 years ago, and haven't missed very many days shaved bald.

i looked terrible with thinning sickly hair. i don't have much to razor anymore but I'm glad the rest is gone.

Hi Chris:  I agree.  I wish I still had "nice" hair but since it has gotten so thin and whispy I would rather be rid of it entirely.

Always wanted to so I did a virtual st baldricks and made 500 bucks. Sat down in the barber chair and got it cue balled. I go back and forth but decided after I get my dvm I’m going to keep it sly 24/7. It’s just easier.

I used to be bald before I retired but after that, I let it grow until this covid thing came along and I needed a haircut but all the shops here were closed.  My wife offered to trim my hair but I didn't want that so I trimmed it myself just like my picture indicates.  My wife loves it and gets mad if I miss a day.  Well, a mans gotta do what he gotta do!

Yes, I had a full head of gorgeous silver grey hair. Then two of my neighbors were sporting shaved heads, and I was seeing more guys with baldie haircuts, and wanted to try it JUST ONE TIME! That was 8 years ago, still shaving my head every day.

I had thought about shaving my head for a long time, even back in my teens when long hair was in style.  I had a good friend who was losing his hair that shaved his head over twenty years ago.  I was married to my ex wife back then and mentioned to her that I’d like to shave mine.  To put it mildly, she wasn’t supportive.    I talked it over with my current wife about five years ago and she didn’t mind at all.  I was happy with the results, but I ended up growing it back almost immediately.   I shaved again off and over the next three years, but had a little trouble committing to the style and maintenance involved.  I can still grow a full head of hair.  I’ve kept myself shaved over the past year and a half, and I have to say I’m planning on being a bald guy for life.
