Opinions Plzzzzzzz
« on: April 17, 2007, 09:48:54 PM »
Ok, I am wondering if I should "cross over to the dome side" as I like to refer to it. I have read alot of different advice and comments, now need some enlightenment! Been tossing it around, blah blah blah, but here are my personal concerns/questions. 1- I currently have to shave every-other day on the face or I get the bumps. etc. I see alot of people shave every day on the forum, so will the hair on my head grow faster than my face?  2-Other than the Doc, I see no one with regular glasses on, <---confidence question! 3- Afraid the small sprigs I have on the top of my head may not grow back if I don't like it, hard to let whats left go. 4- My family double chin thing I can't get rid of, will I be known as "double dome"?? 5- I see alot of ppl sport goats, I have a stash but thinkin I might lose it as well, or should I go for a goat also? <--Opinions. I guess that about covers me for now, I did use a #3 trim today on the sides to try to see my head shape, will go to a 2 or even 1 this wkend. Attached a pic for you to laugh, I mean give advice from.  PS.. my son took the pic and I'm really not on any drugs, but it was the only one that included my whole head outta 20.....when you pay with peanuts..... :x!

what does your son think? what does your wife think?..i'd say your at the point in balding that going sly would be a very liberating event......your "sprigs" will grow right back along with the rest of your hair if you dont like it......the hair on your head grows the same as your face.....the double chin can be hid with a goatee...i'd definetly grow a goatee if your able too...looks good with a shaved head...also your glasses with look good with a shaved head too.....i say go for it and keep us updated! welcome to SBG's! Go for it!  The hair on your head will grow at pretty much the same rate as your facial hair, a little slower in the thinning areas.

The glasses are fine.  Try the goat to cover the chin; it usually works pretty well for those of us who need it.  At any rate, I'd get rid of the stache-only look, because it tends to age most people.  Notice that you rarely see younger guys wearing just a stache these days.  I also don't think it's the best facial hair option to go with a shaved head.

So the executive summary is:  More fuzz on the chin, less on the scalp!

If you look at my avatar I always am wearing regular glasses.   And to be frank, being bald makes them stand out more and make you look more polished/educated.

Also, based on the picture i'm seeing, you ought go for it.   Just imagine all the time saved not messing with hair and the confidence you will gain.

Champ, you look very similar to a guy I know that buzzed his head down to a #1 and it looks great on him.  Like the others have said, go for it!  Then you can play with the facial hair to get the best look for YOU.

I too have always worn glasses, and will soon get new ones that will try to empathize the sly look. You have the right shaped head for shaving. And like Tyler said, you can always play around with facial hair to see what works best on you; but a goatee should work well.

I guess I am here to echo what others have said: I sometimes wear glasses and I love the way it looks with my bald dome. I would also suggest a goatee, they look great with a sly head and will help cover up your double chin, which I wouldn't worry about anyways, because people are going to be looking at your head, not your chin! Best of luck, hope to see you around the forum more!

hard to let whats left go.

I think you hit the nail on the proverbial head there Champ. A lot of guys find it hard to let go, because they are looking at it "bass ackwards" in my opinion. You ARE going bald... understand that as a fact, fearing it and fighting it cannot change the fact that you are losing your hair. What you CAN change (or control at least) is how you choose to handle this inevitability.

The act of "balding" slowly, over a course of years is an act of clinging to something that is fading away naturally (emphasis on naturally). It projects an image of someone who is "making the best of whats there" so to speak. Someone who is "settling". Someone resisting change. Someone who is trying (desperately in some cases) to fit in with the rest of a society that places value on hair (which seems kinda silly when you say it out loud).

So rather than fight to cover and hold on to what is slipping away no matter what you do. Why not embrace the change? make a statement of it. "Choose" to go SLY before mama nature takes your toys away anyway. Why not make it YOUR choice to head things off at the pass so to speak?

I see shaving my head as a freeing act. I am free from forced conformity, and the low level narcissism of "how does my hair look?". Free from the idea that masculinity is tied to hair growth (that whole Samson story really messed guys up). Free from the troubles and worries of styling (and all the products that go along with it.) And in my case, free from the trouble and embarrassment that comes from Psoriasis and dandruff.

I know have a uniform, low maintenance, consistent, reliable look that I enjoy a great deal. I never have bad hair days, bad hair cuts, or silly hair styles in pictures. I look clean, hygienic, individual and confident (partially because I am never concerned with my hair).

Here are the big questions (in my mind at least):

1. Are YOU happy with the way you look now?

2. What do YOU think your current look says about you?

3. What do YOU want your look to say about you?

All else is crap as far as I am concerned. Those who admire, respect and love you will continue to do so you, regardless of what is (or isn't) on top of your head. Hell, they might admire respect and love you even more for taking control of your situation and making a bold choice.

As far as glasses go... I think they look fine (at least I hope they do  ;) ), and most of the ladies that I've dated have thought so too (yes... some women find even ME attractive). There are some threads on the forum about prescription glasses and the SLY guy (http://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/index.php?topic=380.0) you may want to check out as well. I'd say try the goatee out for a bit... It helps me out with the whole chins thing that is creeping up on me (though I guess more gym and less fast food would help a bit too O0 ), and you can always take it back off again if you don't like it.

In any event, I'd echo the rest of these egg heads in saying "take the plunge!", cause I mean really... what have you got to loose (that you aren't already)?

Just my humble opinion.

Welcome Champ, I can't add much more than what Vash and the other guys have already said.  Just go for it.

I too get a lot of bumps and irritation on my face and neck no matter which way I shave that, therefore I do that every other day.  However, my scalp is totally different.  I have absolutely no problems with that stuff there and shave it everyday.  Go figure?  I'd say you'll have to experiment with that.  Everybody is different.  I will say that since I started  shaving my dome, I've had little to no problems with scalp acne like I had with hair, so it has been a huge bonus for me.  Looking forward to hearing how this all plays out for you.  Again, welcome.

Cheers!

Welcome Champ. Glad you found us. Not much to add after the others have said it all so well, except to vote for going with the goat.  It makes a great addition to the sly look and glasses.

Thanks for all the input guys, I am almost positive I am headed to Sly. Gonna hit the #1 trim this weekend and make the final decision. Oh, and I forgot to mention I have been wifeless for 10 years now...that was a very liberating event ;D and my son is 14, so he just wants to shave my head, said it doesn't matter cause I'm old anyway!! I do alot of singing (Rock and Roll) so he told me to get temp tats like a big star or something to hit the stage with.....Kids. I have asked some of my female um.... acquaintances and have had mixed reactions, but I do not think I will end up in a desert :*))  I will update my pic as the events unfold.  Oh, and one more question, I don't think I want to gleam, live in the south and the sun could be a blinding experience, is the matte stuff good to cut some of the shine off?? Plus can it blend with sunscreen...will need to apply daily here.  Thanks again guys...

Hey Champ, you can buy a lotion called Matte for Men that has a matte finish and an SPF of 25.  You can also use HeadLube Matte and add sunscreen on top, but the sunscreen may add a little extra shine.

Of course I say go for it...

the glasses aren't a problem at all with a shaved head...usually looks good.....

don't lose the stash, grow the bottom into a goat (at least for now during the transition)..you don't want to scar yourself off of the look, by going the 'full monty", Mr. Clean route (at first)..especially if you're concerned with the double chin...you may feel TOO bald and doughy...trust me on that..... especially at first!

Good luck and let us know how it goes on your journey to SLY!

Welcome Champ,
Have been shaving 5 days now and will never go back. So far have overwhelmingly positive reactions to the new look.
If you want to get an idea of how it will look....check out www.baldlygo.com. You submit a picture and you will get a "virtual head shave" so you can get an idea of how you will look. They will even add a goat.

Good luck with your decision.
