like what the guy on the left has where its obvious theres a barely noticeable hair outline?
because i see that which looks great..then i see bald people with an obvious horse shoe like this
where there's a blatant horseshoe and i can't tell if it's bc they don't shave on a daily basis or thats the best it can look..

Yes you are exactly right. Some people, especially those with dark hair and fair skin, or with coarse hair can show a shadow even shaving daily, myself my remaining hair isn't to dense so don't show too much shadow

Yes, those are the shadows.
Like Dan said, it all comes down to the contrast between the guy's skin tone and hair color.
