Title: Barbershop Headshave?
Post by: F77Scot on October 22, 2012, 12:50:52 PM
So, I have found out there is a barbers near where I live now that are doing headshaves. I like the feeling of doing it myself, so is it worth trying the barbershop headshave experience?

A barbershop headshave is a luxury and an indulgence.  Try it at least once.  Here is my caveat, though.  To date I have never had as close a shave from a barber as I can give to myself.  Nonetheless, I plan on continuing my quest for the perfect headshave.

Red echoes my sentiments exactly. Try it at least once as an indulgence but I've never heard of one as close as a shave that you can give yourself.

Hi Scott, I always get my head shaved smooth at the barbershop. I have posted about it some time ago. I have the smoothest head after the barber is done with me. Maybe it helps that my barber is my regular barber in the past 5 years. Hope you try and enjoy the experience.

so is it worth trying the barbershop headshave experience?

Yes, just once.

Don't think the barber shaved any closer than what I do at home. While he was shaving my head, the barber was giving me tips and advice on how to improve my own shaving techniques.

And I enjoyed walking out of the barber's with a freshly shaved head.

Recommended.

I agree with Simply Red and Mr. Jules. It is a truly enjoyable experience and fun to be pampered once in awhile. I agree that I have never gotten as close a shave from a barber as I have done myself. Never the less, it is a great experience. You can also pick up some good tips on how to improve on doing head shaves yourself. My barber told me that it is all in the prep which makes for a good head shave. I am sure that you wilol find it to be an enjoyable experience.

Back from my first barbershop head shave and it was a unique experience. The barberette was extremely professional and very adept at shaving although admittedly she doesn't do many head shaves but does do 2-3 face shaves weekly. It was very relaxing, but I do get a closer shave. Will definitely try it again, and most likely with the same berber.

Although very relaxing I have found as others have that I get a better shave myself than from a barber(ette).  Go figure.

I went to the barber today, but it was mostly to get a beard trim...I did have enough peach fuzz on the noggin so I let him go ahead and shave my head. He applied the hot towel, the whole nine yards...He did a solid job, I would give him an 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Went for my second barbershop head shave today. The first one (two weeks ago) was good but not great (hot female barber, great atmosphere, high-end upscale shop and overall a nice experience). Today I went to a place in NYC called Eddie's Haircut and Shave and it was great. The woman who took care of me was so attentive and got me as smooth as can be. Taught me some good tips, like using an alum bar after shaving to close the pores and stop any minor nicks. Will be heading back once a month for a shave.

I do agree in principle that a shave in a shop may not be as close and smooth as you get at home, but the overall experience is so worth it.

Try it, you'll like it.

I stopped in a local shop and the gentleman told me he is no longer able to shave heads, per (Indiana)state law. Said lobbying by hair stylists and salon owners are responsible. Haven't been able to confirm his story yet, but I see no reason for him to not want to do the job.
Anybody else heard about this.

I would believe that I have heard that also .  Also with blood borne pathogens , they would have to wear cloves like people in medicine and also tatoo artists.   If I was going to go to a barber that was going to chop me up would I go ?  :/O

Well, I finally got round to the barbershop headshave, amazing feeling! Although not as close as I get myself I have to say it was another great confidence boost and a very relaxing experience...I was sitting right at the front of the shop and saw plenty of folks looking in as my head was being lathered up.....

Thursday, I went to town and got a beard trim and headshave. The guy used a shavette, and because business was slow, he cut over my head twice. When he was done, my beard was shaped the best that it had been in a while, and my head was super smooth! He did such a good job, I didn't feel any stubble till Saturday. Will have to pay this guy a visit on my next barbershop headshave.

I was in California last week on vacation.  Had my fourth barbershop headshave at http://www.joesbarbershop.com/ (http://www.joesbarbershop.com/) on Market Street near Church Street from Jonathan.

This was one of my best headshaves ever.  Very close.  Jonathan uses a straight razor.

I do think it would be a great deal easier to trust his with a straight razor than just about anybody else.  haha

Hi Guys

I am only two weeks into being sly but my first head shave was at a salon in Thailand by a women who used a single blade razor.  She gave me lots of advice in regards to head care pre and post shave.  Where I live there are many barbers who shave your head with a single blade.  The cost is between 60 to 100 baht (100 baht equates to £2.00).  The barbers are very professional and all work in reputable gents/women's barbers/salons.

I have purchased a Head Blade ATX and really enjoy shaving my own head and will continue to do so.  However, once a month I am going to have my head shaved at the barbers followed by a full body massage at the massage parlour next door.  Total cost will be 300 baht (£6).

Will share my experience once I return at the end of this month guys.

Kindest regards

Andy

I've not yet had my head shaved at a barber, but when I had hair, I used to enjoy going. The enjoyment came from the sheer relaxation of it. I felt the same way about a haircut as I feel about a message. I stopped going when I gave up on the hair and just asked for a buzz. They were charging me the same price for a five minute buzz than they were charging me for a real hair cut. So I began doing it myself.

Now that I shave all the way, I should probably reconsider the occasional trip to the barber.

I have to say I miss the barber shop experience. I used to go to a turkish barbers about once a month and got the whole hot towel, ear trim, eyebrow trim, head massage. Those turkish barbers know how to treat their customers for a good price!

I've moved outside London now so can't just pop down the road to my local one now otherwise I would be tempted to get a headshave everyonce in a while, even tho I think I shave my head better than someone else.

It is relaxing and fun to go to a Berber to get shaved. I go to a female barber who clipper shaves first and that's followed by a norelco and foil shaver along with the pampering of hot towels and a razor. The shave is very smooth. I've been to other barbers who use only a razor and I always felt that he shaves we're never smooth enough and always felt disappointed.

I love the barbershop experience too. Last week I skipped most days of shaving and I was going to treat myself to a head shave at the barbers. I pulled into the parking lot and as I was about to park, three other customers walked into the shop. At that point I lost interest thinking an hour wait! So said forget it! I will go home and just shave myself to get smoothest shave but just make a bit of a mess in the sink because I did have to use clippers first.

The biggest advantage to being sly is that it's DIY, it's cheap, no waiting, and you definitely get the most satisfaction with the smoothest shave.

Today, I was in Baton Rouge getting a flat tire fixed. There was a barbershop across the street and it was surprisingly empty for a Saturday! My beard was starting to kink up and I hadn't shaved my head since early Monday, so I decided to walk in and give it a try. Surprisingly the guy did my beard FIRST! he cut all the loose hairs and shaped it up nicely. He used a straight for the face, but when it came time for the head, he ran a foil shaver across my head and then-get this-he used a Lord DE razor (Wilkinson Blade) to shave my head! He had used the hot towels and Shea Shave cream for the lather He did one side at a time both ATG and WTG. This guy put the other barbers I've been to to shame when it comes to smoothness! I gave him $20+tip, but I have to say this is the first time that I can remember where I didn't have to go home and go over it again for smoothness. I'd say he spent a good 45 minutes, and I would go to him again for my next barbershop headshave!

I regularly go to my Turkish barber. It's very relaxing. First, the barber soaps up my head. Then I get a glass of tea, very fine. He shaves my head with a razor several times until it is nice and smooth. At the end he rubs the head with alcohol and cream.  He brings the beard in order. Finally, he removes with a flame all superfluous hair. I enjoy it. O0

I haven't been to the barbershop since the first two times I had my head shaved last year.  I've been doing it myself after the second visit.  I did enjoy the relaxing experience that goes with the whole barbershop visit.  It helped that the shop had a tap so I could drink a beer while I waited.

I do recall that although my head looked smooth, it didn't feel smooth in some spots, which tend to be my problem spots.

It definitely is a treat and one that I think I need to start indulging in every now and again.

It's hard, but I didn't shave today, going to try and go 3 days without shaving so I can go and try a new barbershop. I found a master barber that only charges $15 for a headshave. I like to have more than stubble to shave.

Well, I finally got around to trying a new barber. I had 4 days of growth, and he was the one charging $15. It looks like you get what you pay for. He didn't seem too happy to be doing a headshave. A warm towel for about 30 seconds, foam shaving cream, and a not very sharp razor. Only took him about 10 minutes and the result felt like my head feels after one days growth. I would gladly pay the extra 6 bucks and have my other barber shave me.

With respect, gentlemen, don't ever have a headshave by a barber who is reluctant to give a one.

I have had four, from four different barbers.  Truth be told, I can always shave my own head better, but that's not really the point.  I consider it a luxurious indulgence.  I'm still looking for the ultimate barbershop headshave.

You are right DOC, the other guy I went to did a much better job and the experience was much better. If I could get my first barber to finish with a pass against the grain, it would be a fantastic shave, worth the $21.
