Title: Do you consider shaving to be high maintenance or low maintenance?
Post by: Nikki on June 29, 2015, 08:34:06 AM
I've been bald for almost a year now(on my birthday,July 9th) and I never thought about shaving my head often as high maintenance or low maintenance. What do you think?

If anything, I consider it low maintenance since it only adds a few extra minutes to my routine every day.  Starting out the day with a freshly shaved bald head is worth it to me. It's just something I LOVE having so the maintenance part wouldn't be an issue for me.

For me shaving is low maintenance compared to the time it took me to deal with my unruly hair.  Especially now that I have my shaving routine down to just a few minutes.

But my guess is that a short buzz cut is the actual lowest maintenance option.

I love being bald.  I don't consider it high maintenance.  However, I will concede that real low maintenance was having a fade.  Shaving makes getting ready take more time than when I had a fade, but not significantly more.

Absolutely! I think head shaving is very high maintenance. So it takes you an hour a month to go get a haircut, compared to at least 30 minutes a day to headshave. When you have a full head to shave, and face, with a double edge safety razor it takes time. I am not complaining, I thoroughly enjoy my morning routine. Then there is all the equipment, soaps, brushes, skin conditioners, etc.

But like AJ says, it's worth it. Love my smooth bald head!

I would say that it is fairly low maintenance for me. I do it while I am in the shower that it only adds a few minutes. Also it makes clean up is easy.

For you guys with a full head of hair, yeah... gonna take some time, but for us "lucky ones" with mpb... 10 minutes in the shower, though at weekends I take my time with my de.... So pretty low maintenance

Yes, you lucky guys with mpb, us poor dudes with a full head of hair have twice as much to shave. I often wondered how much easier it is just to have to shave the fringe. Well, I guess I'll find out someday, as I noticed some receding in my temple area.

The funny thing is the low maintenance of shaving saved my butt today as I woke up 30 minutes before I needed to be at a meeting and was able to make it because I didn't have to shave to be able to make the meeting on time.

Even with a full head of hair, I find it to be pretty low maintenance. An extra 20 minutes if I shave every day, 30 to 35 if every other day.

I agree with a lot of the folks here.  It takes an extra 20-30 minutes in the morning because I have a full head of hair.  But because I so thoroughly enjoy the time I spend shaving, and the feel of a freshly shaven head, I consider it low maintenance.

My hair is wavy, so it was a struggle each morning to get the horseshoe under control so it did not curl up like Bozo.

When I started shaving, the process for just the head took about fifteen minutes at the sink.

Now, it is less than five minutes total in the shower to get both the dome and face done.

Yeah, it is a very low maintenance thing for me.

With the receding hairline, there was quite a bit of maintenance - some tricky combing and spraying - constant checking of the hair. Bald is so much easier. Although I tend to make it high maintenance because I enjoy the process so much. A lot of time is spent with the oils, creams, the brush and a triple pass with the DE razor. But it's worth it.

Hi Nikki:  1st of all I want to wish you an early Happy Birthday.  For me I shave the traditional way by using a DE or SE razor, shave soap, and shaving brush.  The process of shaving is my "zen" moment or spa-like moment.  It is part of the day or night that I can get away from the world and just relax.  So . . . I consider it very low maintenance.

Low maintenance due to the amount of time it took to deal with my wavy unruly hair. And I use a single blade straight razor and it takes me a half hour everyday to shave my head since I a do four passes, two with the grain and two against the grain but I'm super smooth when I'm done.

Good question.  I consider it both.

It's high maintenance in that the daily upkeep, prepping the "tools" of the trade, etc. requires time and preparation.  But it is also low maintenance in that there is no having to style anything after you get out of the shower, towel dry, splash on some aftershave lotion and go.  And throughout the day, nothing will affect the look of your head, wind, rain, sun, whatever, it's still gonna look the same.  With hair, the environment can cause havoc to you're styled hair, making it go from looking good to looking a mess.

Wow! Just reading some posts I'm suprised that guys take an extra 20 minutes? It takes me between 7-10 minutes to shave. So low maintenance! :) love it

Objectivally I consider it high maintinence as on the days I shave it adds an extra 20 minutes or so to my routine. ( Or extra 10 minutes when I had hair)

But I think a large part of this is that I now take pride in how I look and how my head feels. I could not shave for 3 or 4 days and look okay, and have a rough head, but that would drive me mental!

Bearing in mind, I shave with the Wahl Balders pretty much to the skin every 2-3 days, I'd say that compared to the 10 mins a day I'd spend styling my hair - along with visits to the hairdresser and money spent on product that being bald is a very low maintenance option for me!

I'd say that it has become more high maintenance in the sense that I use more product on my head now than I did when I had hair. Thank you Bee Bald and Headblade for your various stellar products that keep my sly look a slick look!

I've commented on this before, and for me, being bbc, takes extra time every day to shave. I hadn't shaved for over 2 weeks(that's another story) and today I exfoliated, shaved and lotioned, and it looks and feels fantastic! It's so worth the time to maintain a nice smooth head.

Im kinda on the fence with this one. Its high maintenance in that it requires extra product i dont need on other areas of my body that i shave, but also low maintenance because it only adds a few extra mins in the shower. But even that is an issue ive solved. Since i was already shaving everything below the neck, i discovered adding the time it took to shave my head to my shower time caused the hot water to run out. So now since i already take 2 showers a day, i simply shave my head during my morning shower, and the rest during evening shower.

High maintenance. As well as the head to shave, there's a beard to groom and a handlebar mustache to wax.

Still, it's look !

What can make it bit more difficult is skin type . I have oily skin soi have ended up investing in scrubs and face washes to keep the skin smooth . Also the more i shave the faster it grows back. I have cut down the amount of shaving i do to every other day . Works  for me best that way

Well for me it's a lot quicker then when I used to shave my face and only takes a few mins longer then when I used to use an electric rotary shaver with much better and longer lasting results. Now since I've grown so accustomed to the smooth dome and feel the need to shave every day whenever possible I actually could say that it is high maintenance.  Also I am BBC with very thick coarse curly hair that grows in all directions and takes 3+ passes plus touch ups to get 100% smooth unless I settle for a "better then a buzz cut" day where I'll do a quick 2 passer.

I guess my final answer is, for me, a low maintenance task requiring high maintenance upkeep...

I consider it high maintenance but so worth it. I always thought a slick head and furry everywhere else pairs well on a guy!

I responded one to this, but for me it ls less maintenance (or time) to daily shave than the time it took to make my hair presentable each morning.

High, need razors and shaving cream and if you miss a few days you need to trim first.

I consider it high maintenance , but something I want to invest my time doing. I used to have really long hair back when I was a musician back in the late 80's/early 90's and it was a real pain to untangle my rats nest after a gig. After my hair started disappearing I finally started shaving my head with clippers but never went all the way because I was afraid I would cut my head off and didn't think my electric would be able to do the job. I was lazy and would go a few months between shaves and swore every time I would do better at keeping it trimmed but never did. I finally went sly and now I look forward to shaving every day....sometimes twice a day. :) I started out using my old electric and moved up to the Bald Eagle and now am using my safety razor . I am still slow at it but have been trying to practice as much as possible to get the technique down which is why I have been shaving twice a day for the last week. I even get up earlier in the morning so I can spend the extra time shaving. I love the whole brush/bowl experience...it really changed my thinking about shaving and my getting ready in the mornings in general.

Yes, being retired is a simple pleasure. Having the extra time every day to enjoy a lengthy bowl/brush, DE razor headshave. BBC here, so head and face take at least 30 minutes. Time well spent!

High maintenance, bordering on royal pain in the ass...

would not advise anyone to do this by choice LOL

High maintenance.

Shaving my head takes 10 minutes, which I do every other day. Used to be daily. So that's about 2.5 hour per month. When I had hair, a monthly visit to the barbers would be over in 15 minutes.

Then there's the beard to be groomed and washed once a week. And until recently, I'd spend 5 minutes each day waxing my moustache.

It's a full time job being a SBG !!

I consider it a pleasure and not a chore. I never spent much time worrying too much about my appearance before I started shaving my head because once I started losing my hair I didn't want to spend much time doing more than washing it before I left the house. I started wet shaving my face again shortly after I started shaving my head....this time I started to shave properly and not rush through it like I had done off and on for 30 plus years. I now really enjoy my shaves and if I get a great shave in the morning it sets me up to have a good day. Now that my head is shaved I make sure I have a really great shave before I leave the house every morning ....so to me it is not high or low maintenance , it's just an enjoyable start to my day.
